Installation Instructions
A. STARTING THE INSTALLATION
Read all installation instructions thoroughly before installation.
- This installation guide is meant for single family installations. Multi-dwellings apartments have their own installation instructions:
- UltraCeramic is recommended for use as a floor in dry and temperature controlled residential environment.
- Use only at temperatures between 55°F and 100°F (13°C and 38°C)
- UltraCeramic Residential: Recommended as a floor in all areas of the home except in exterior or unheated areas, wet areas, like shower walls or shower floors, counter tops, ceilings, on ramps or in a closed area that is directly exposed to sunlight and where temperature will rise excessively that is, above 38ºC (100ºF).
- When installing flooring, make sure that the pattern and the shade numbers are the same if more than one box is used.
ACCESSORIES AND TOOLS REQUIRED
- American Biltrite PS-30 pressure sensitive adhesive
- UltraCeramic Premixed Grout
- Trowel, gloves, utility knife, square edge, kneepads
- 100 lbs roller (can be rented at a hardware store near you)
- Horseshoe shaped spacers (1/8’’ or 1/16’’)
- Rubber grout float
- Sponge, white scouring pad, spray bottle, 2 buckets of water
SITE CONDITIONS
- Store UltraCeramic in the installation area.
- Tile, subfloor and room must be conditioned for 48 hours prior to, during and 72 hours after installation at a temperature between 65°F (18°C) and 85°F (29°C).
- UltraCeramic should be unstacked 48 hours prior to installation.
- Avoid placing flooring in direct sunlight (windows or doors) before installation, as it could create shading.
MOISTURE
For a concrete floor, moisture vapor emissions should not exceed:
8 lbs/1,000 ft2/24 hours (3.63 kg/92.9 m2/24 hours).
Note: Do not install UltraCeramic over expansion joints; instead, cut the tile neatly to each side of the joint and fill it with an elastomeric polyurethane joint filler or cover with an expansion plate cover.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR RADIANT FLOOR HEATING SYSTEMS
B. SUBFLOOR PREPARATION
- For wood floors: Wood subfloors must be structurally sound and free of movement with at least 18” (45cm) of well-ventilated air space below.
- Single layer floors and strip wood floors must be covered with a ¼” or heavier construction grade plywood to achieve a total subfloor thickness to be a minimum of 1’’.
- Position underlay so all joints are staggered.
- Seal room perimeter that may be exposed to surface spills with a silicone caulking.
- Subfloor must be smooth and flat, as imperfections in the subfloor may show through the finished flooring. All cracks, voids and undulations must be repaired prior to flooring installation with high strength Portland cement-based patching material.
- All surfaces must be clean, dry and free of dust, grease, paint, oil, sealers and curing compounds or any other foreign material that may interfere with proper adhesion.
- Do not use chemical adhesive removal products (chemical abatement products); their use will void the American Biltrite warranty.
- American Biltrite does not recommend the installation of grouted UltraCeramic over luan, particle board, flake board, wafer board (OSB) or chip board (OSB) as well as over existing resilient floor coverings or damaged rigid flooring surfaces like ceramic or similar.
WARNING: REMOVAL OF OLD FLOORING
Do not sand, dry sweep, dry scrape, drill, saw, bead blast, mechanically chip
or pulverize existing resilient flooring, backing, felt lining, paint,
asphaltic cutback adhesives or other adhesives. These products may contain
asbestos fibers or crystalline silica. Avoid creating dust as inhalation
increases the risk of cancer and respiratory diseases. Smokers exposed to
asbestos fibers are at greater risk of serious bodily harm. Unless certain
that the product is asbestosfree, assume that it contains asbestos.
Regulations may require that material be tested to determine asbestos content.
Consult the Resilient Floor Covering Institute’s (RFCI’s) recommendations for
removal of existing resilient floor coverings.
*Please note that the latest version of these installation instructions are available at www.ultraceramic.com and prevail.
C. FINDING YOUR STARTING POINT
The use of the proper adhesive is critical to a successful end result.
American Biltrite will only guarantee its flooring products when installed
with its PS-30 adhesive.
- PS-30 is a low-VOC pressure-sensitive adhesive specifically formulated for use on porous and non-porous surfaces.
- Protect adhesive from freezing in transit and storage.
- Trowel specifications are written as follows: depth / width / spacing.
A. Draw the center line of one of the dimensions of the room.
B. Locate the center point on the line drawn.
C. Use the 3-4-5 method to create the set square.
D. Using a chalk lines trace a perpenticular center line after having
created the set square in step “C”.
E. Lay the first tile (tile #1) at the center point of the room and
follow the drawn line.
The start line can be moved to ensure a tile length (tile #5) of more than
2’’ along the wall.
Repeat the next row based on your desired laying pattern.
D. APPLYING THE ADHESIVE AND SETTING THE TILES
- You are now ready to apply the adhesive. For porous and nonporous surfaces: Spread adhesive with 0.8 mm x 1.6 mm x 0.8 mm (1/32” x 1/16” x 1/32”) U-notched trowel.; Coverage: 18.5 – 23.2 m2/3.79 liters (200–250 ft2/gal.) Allow the adhesive to dry to the touch (around 30 to 60 minutes). It will turn from light blue to clear.
- Lay the first row of tiles onto the adhesive and position them carefully against the spacers. Repeat on the next row based on your desired laying pattern using the spacers on each sides.
- To cut tile, score with a utility knife and bend to separate.
Spacers must be used on all sides.
E. ROLLING THE FLOOR
- Remove all spacers.
- Roll flooring in both directions with a 34-45 kg (75-100 lbs.) sectional roller, within 3 hours of tile installation.
F. GROUTING
Tiles can be grouted immediately after installation.
Follow directions on the grout container.
APPROXIMATE COVERAGE: PER U.S. GALLON (3.79L):
Joint Width
| Coverage
---|---
1/16” (1.6mm)| 450 ft2 (42 m2 )
1/8” (3.2mm)| 325 ft2 (31 m2 )
NOTES:
Flooring shall be installed over uncovered adhesive within 3 hours. Tiles
Flooring products with arrows on the back must be installed with the arrows
all pointing in the same direction.
F. GROUT CLEAN UP
- Allow the grout to firm up prior to cleanup. The set time (3-5 minutes) may vary, depending on the temperature and the humidity condition.
- Apply a very light film of water over the tile surface using a spray bottle.
- Do not allow the water to flow into the ungrouted joints or accumulate in finished areas.
- Rub the grout haze very gently using a clean, damp white scouring pad.
- Take a clean, damp, flat square sponge and slowly wipe diagonally across the tile to remove the remaining grout. Repeat until the surface is clean. Use two buckets of clean water–one for rinsing most of the grout residue and the other for moistening the sponge for the final cleanup.
- If residue is observed on the tile surface, a final wash can be performed using a clean, damp white scouring pad.
- Clean tools with water while grout is wet. If dried, remove with mineral spirits, rubbing alcohol, denatured alcohol, or methyl hydrate.
TRAFFIC GUIDELINE
-
Light traffic after 8 hours to allow the grout or the sealer to dry.
-
After 24 hours, make use of appropriate equipment to place furniture and appliances; regular traffic is allowed.
UNGROUTED TILE INSTALLATION
UltraCeramic was designed as an alternative to ceramic tiles providing a
100% no gap continuous floor without the issues associated with ceramic tiles,
such as providing a warmer underfoot, comfort and, faster and mess-free
installation. We recommend installing UltraCeramic with its pre-mixed fast
curing grout to achieve a no gap continuous flooring and the authentic look of
hard surface flooring. It is possible to install UltraCeramic without grout.
To do so, please modify installation guidelines as follows:
Follow installation guidelines and instead of applying the tiles to the
spacers, simply lay the tiles to be lightly butted together when placed onto
the adhesive.
Instead of the premixed grout, purchase the UltraCeramic JS100 Joint Sealer
which is required for all ungrouted UltraCeramic floors. UltraCeramic JS100
Joint Sealer is designed to keep surface water and dirt from penetrating
ungrouted floor joints.
Follow directions on the UltraCeramic JS100 Joint Sealer container.
