STAINLESS STEEL STRADDLE TILTER
INTRODUCTION
This manual contains information to acquaint you with the safe and proper
installation, use, and upkeep of the machine. You should ensure that this
manual is available to personnel working with the machine and require its use
by these personnel.
In the interest of safety, please read this entire manual carefully, and be
familiar with its contents before you install, use, or service the machine. If
you have any questions about any instructions in this manual, please contact
your dealer or Superlift.
Superlift’s product warranty is provided in the back of this manual. This
instruction manual is not intended to be or to create any other warranty,
expressed or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability or
fitness for a particular purpose, all of which are hereby expressly excluded.
As set forth more specifically in the product warranty. Superlift’s obligation
under that warranty is limited to the repair or replacement of defective
components, which shall be the buyer’s sole remedy. Superlift shall not be
liable for any loss, injury, or damage to persons or property, nor for any
direct, indirect, or consequential damage of any kind resulting from the lift
table.
RESPONSIBILITY OF OWNERS AND USERS
Inspection and Maintenance
The device shall be inspected and maintained in proper working order in
accordance with Superlift’s owner’s manual.
Removal from Service
Any device not in safe operating condition such as, but not limited to,
excessive leakage, missing rollers, pins, or fasteners, any bent or cracked
structural members, cut or frayed electric, hydraulic, or pneumatic lines,
damaged or malfunctioning controls or safety devices, etc. shall be removed
from service until it is repaired to the original manufacturer’s standards.
Deflection
It is the responsibility of the user/purchaser to advise the manufacturer
where deflection may be critical to the application.
Repairs
All repairs shall be made by qualified personnel in conformance with
Superlift’s instructions
Operators
Only trained personnel and authorized personnel shall be permitted to operate
the lift
Before Operation
Before using the device, the operator shall have:
- Read and/or had explained, and understood, the manufacturer’s operating instructions and safety rules.
- Inspected the device for proper operation and condition. Any suspect item shall be carefully examined and a determination made by a qualified person as to whether it constitutes a hazard. All items not in conformance with Superlift’s specification shall be corrected before further use of the equipment.
During Operation
The device shall only be used in accordance with this owner’s manual.
- Do not overload.
- Ensure that all safety devices are operational and in place.
Modifications or Alterations
Modifications or alterations to any Superlift industrial positioning equipment
shall be made only with written permission from Superlift.
SAFETY ALERT SYMBOLS AND SIGNAL WORDS
The safety of all persons operating, maintaining, repairing, or in the
vicinity of this equipment is of paramount concern. This is a powerful machine
with moving parts, and is capable of causing personal injury if proper
precautions are not taken. Therefore, throughout this manual, certain hazards
have been identified which may occur in the use of the machine, and there are
appropriate instructions or precautions which should be taken to avoid these
hazards.
In some cases, there are consequences which may occur if instructions or
precautions are not followed. Below are the symbols and signal words along
with their definitions referenced from ANSI Z535.4 – Product Safety Signs and
Labels.
Safety Alert Symbols
These are the safety alert symbols. They are used to alert you to potential
physical injury hazards. Obey all safety messages that follow this symbol to
avoid possible injury or death.

Signal Words
The meaning of different signal words as defined by ANSI Standard Z535.4
indicates the relative seriousness of the hazardous situation.
DANGER indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result
in death or serious injury.
WARNING indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could
result in death or serious injury.
NOTICE is used to address practices not related to personal injury.
CAUTION, used with the safety alert symbol, indicates a hazardous
situation which, if not avoided, could result in minor or moderate injury.
SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS (or equivalent) signs indicate safety related
instructions or procedures.
MAINTENANCE
All service should be done by qualified personnel. Qualified personnel should be able to read and understand wiring and hydraulic diagrams. They should be able to troubleshoot live electrical circuits safely and in accordance with accepted practice. FOR SAFETY’S SAKE, if in doubt, please contact your dealer of Superlift Customer Service 1-800-884-1891 Before servicing the lift, read and understand this entire section and the section entitled “Operating Instructions.”
Hazards
There are several hazards you should be aware of as you service the lift.
Before working on the machine be sure to insert any and all maintenance
devices. See figure 1.
The machine may use a power supply of up to 575 Volts. This voltage can kill
you. Do not work with the electrical parts unless you are a qualified
electrician.
Do not change the setting on the relief valve in the pump. If you do, this may
damage the machine and you may be hurt. The relief valve has been included for
the protection of all of the workers who use the machine.
Before working on the machine, be sure to release pressure on the hydraulic
system.
The warning labels on the machine are there for the safety of the operator. If
the labels are worn or missing, replace them.
Routine periodic maintenance
Every month:
- Visually inspect the center pivot bearing, cylinder clevis pins and bushings. Apply oil or WD40 to all parts listed above.
- Inspect hoses and fittings for leaks. Note: Although the bearings are “lifetime lubricated” their performance may be extended by additional periodic lubrication (WD-40).
- Check the level and appearance of the hydraulic fluid. Use a dipstick to check the oil level and add oil if necessary. Change the oil if it has darkened from its original color, turned milky white or if it feels gritty or sticky.
- Inspect the overall condition of the lift; looking for loose or worn out components.
SAFETY
In the interest of safety, please read this entire manual carefully. Please understand the material in this manual before you operate the Superlift Portable Lift and Tilt. Please be sure that everyone who uses or services the Portable Lift and Tilt has read this manual. If you have any questions about any of the instructions in this manual, please contact your dealer or the Superlift Products Corporation.
Safe Servicing of the Lift
Superlift is concerned about the safety of everyone that operates, maintains,
repairs, or works near a Superlift lift. Blocking the lift is the only safe
way to perform service or maintenance.
In this manual, we will refer you to this procedure many times. In the
interest of safety please follow all of these steps whenever you work under
the Portable Lift and Tilt:
As the lift moves up and down, pinch points are created. If you are standing
too close to the lift when it is moving, your arm or leg may be caught in the
moving parts, and you may be hurt. Stay away from the pinch points when the
lift is moving.
Be sure to use both the left and right maintenance device. Both the left and
right devices supplied with your machine must be used to support the table
safely.
- Remove the payload from the tabletop.
- Raise the Portable Lift platform to the full-up position. Don’t let the table stop part way up.
- Move the maintenance devices into a vertical position. Lower the table so the maintenance device is resting firmly between the tabletop and the base. With the maintenance devices properly installed the pressure in the hydraulic system will be relieved. If you do not do this, pressure may remain in the hydraulic system. If this pressure is released suddenly, you may be hurt, or the Portable Lift and Tilt may be damaged. Once in position the devices will keep the legs from moving, and prevent the lift from dropping suddenly.
- Complete the work under the lift, then reverse the process to get the Portable Lift and Tilt ready for operation.
- Repeat this process very time you must work under the coil car. DO THIS EVEN IF YOU WILL ONLY BE UNDER THE TABLE FOR A MOMENT!
SAFETY REGULATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
There is a built-in safety function in the safety frame. If the safety frame
is touched on its way down, the table stops immediately. To continue lowering,
the table has to be raised a little to be able to lower again.
Portable Lift and Tilt tables are always delivered with a control unit of the
“deadman” type, which means that when the up or down button (or foot pedal on
a foot switch control) is released the table will stop immediately.
Employee and employer must ensure it that risk of trapping does not occur
during installation use or maintenance of the lifting equipment.
- Do not exceed the lifting capacity. The load must be fixed – Max load + load evenly distributed.
- Check the action of the safety frames and the distance around the equipment to eliminate the risk trapping.
- Precautionary labeling must be legible.
- Check for damage due to overloading.
- Check and maintain cables and hoses.
- Check for oil leakage. Grease if necessary.
- Clean the lift table.
- When the load is wheel borne, or there is a likelihood that the load may start to roll, the platform should be fitted with a stop or restraint to prevent load from moving.
- Tilting platforms must include a fixed method of retaining the load.
- Hazard – no hands or feet under the platform
SAFE SERVICING OF PORTABLE LIFT AND TILT
Only authorized personnel should perform inspection or maintenance and service
procedures.
Unauthorized personnel attempting these procedures do so at the risk of severe
Failure to properly adhere to lift blocking procedures is to risk the sudden
and uncontrolled descent of the lift during maintenance or inspection. A
falling lift can cause severe injury or death.
This procedure describes the only factory-approved method of working under a
lift. Follow these instructions EVERY time you plan to reach or crawl beneath
the lift to perform service or maintenance – no matter how momentary that
might be.
If the factory-provided maintenance device is damaged or missing, stop
immediately and consult the factory for assistance. The manufacturer is not
liable for your failure to use the approved maintenance device(s) and
procedures that have been provided.
- Any load must be removed from the lift prior to engaging the maintenance device(s). These devices are designed to support an unloaded lift only. Failure to remove the load from the lift prior to blocking could cause the failure of the maintenance device(s) and allow the lift to fall unexpectedly. This can result in personal injury or death, or permanent damage to the maintenance device(s) and/or the lift.
- Raise the lift to its fully raised position. If you do not, the maintenance device(s) may not be able to be placed properly in its/their designed blocking position.
- Remove the maintenance device(s) from its/their storage location and place it/them into the engaged position as shown in Figure 1. (Note: further information may be useful here to provide additional instructions as to the location and method of storage and engaged positions).
- Lower the lift until it makes complete contact with the maintenance device(s). Re-check to ensure that all provided devices are fully and securely engaged. If the device(s) is/are not fully engaged the lift could fall unexpectedly, resulting in permanent damage to the device(s) or the lift.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Safety Instructions
To avoid bodily injury, please read all instructions before operating or servicing the unit.

Do not work under the tilt platform when it is raised. Before servicing the unit, always lower the unit and unplug the power cord. Remember that the battery is still connected, and can still provide power to the unit.

Never put your hands or feet under the tilt platform.
-
As the unit is operating, stay away from the moving parts shown if Fig. 2.
-
Do not stand, sit or ride on the tilt platform.
-
Before raising or lowering the tilt platform, always set the floor lock so the unit cannot roll out of position.
Loading the unit
-
Before operating the unit, please read and understand all of this section.
-
Load the unit correctly.
Before lifting, push the lifting arms of the unit completely under the load so that no space is left between the load and the tilting platform, as shown in Fig. 3. If you do not do this, the container may slide down and create dangerous “pinch points.” Be sure that the load weighs no more than the maximum rated for the unit. The maximum rated load is listed on the data plate. Remember that the lifting container may weigh 75 lbs. or more.
The tilt platform should always be pushed against the load. If the load is placed far out on the lifting arms, the unit may not be able to lift the full rated load safely. See Fig. 3. The unit is designed so that the center of the load is 21″ from the back plate of the platform.
Don’t try to lift a load that exceeds the maximum rating. Only lift a load if the center of load is within the allowable range. If you do not follow these rules, the unit may fail suddenly. Someone may be hurt, and the unit and load may be damaged. -
The load should be balanced in the side-to-side direction. Whenever possible, place the load in the center of the tilting platform, as shown in Fig. 3. If the load is off-center on the pallet, place the heaviest part of the load near the back of the tilt platform – never near the front!

Sometimes the unit may be used to lift parts which can roll. If possible, stack the parts in the parts container so they cannot roll. Do not over-fill the lifting container. If the container is too full, some of the parts may roll out of the front of the container.
Raising the Tilt Platform

Before raising the tilt platform, be sure all workers are clear of the unit.

Before lifting, set the floor lock or caster locks. This will keep the unit in position so that it cannot move accidentally.

As the tilt platform moves up and down, “pinch points” are created as shown if Fig. 2. Stay away from these pinch points! Part of your body or clothing may become caught, and you may be hurt.
Do not put your hands or feet under the tilt platform.
Do not stand or sit on the tilt platform. -
Before lifting, be sure the parts container is pushed up against the tilt platform, as shown in Fig. 3. Be sure the load is balanced side-to-side.

Operate the unit. Press and hold the Up button to raise the tilt platform, and Down to lower it. If the unit does not operate right away, call a qualified maintenance worker.
If you hear a squealing noise from the pump, the pressure relief valve is operating. The pump will overheat very quickly, and may be permanently damaged. The relief valve is included to protect the machine operators. If you do change the setting, this may cause a hydraulic part to fail. The tilt platform may drop suddenly.
Someone may be hurt. and the unit and load may be damaged. The hydraulic parts in the unit are designed to handle a certain amount of pressure. The relief valve has been included for the protection of all of the workers who use the unit.
Moving the unit

Before moving the unit. always lower the tilt platform. You should do this even if the unit is not loaded. Loads must always be moved in the lower position.
If you try to move the unit while the tilt platform is raised, the unit may be unstable. You may be hurt, and the lift or load may be damaged. -
Before moving, release the floor lock or caster wheel brakes.

Always roll the unit across a stable. solid surface
If the floor is not stable or solid, the unit may tilt over. You may be hurt, and the unit or load may be damaged.
Lowering the Tilt Platform
- Before lowering the tilt platform.be sure the floor lock is set. This will keep the unit from moving accidentally.
