Initial setup
-
Find the perfect spot for your Lomi
- Unpack your Lomi and place it on a flat, dry, stable surface.
- You can tuck your Lomi into any corner of your kitchen when not in use, but when you run a cycle make sure to place it at least 6” (15cm) away from the wall and avoid placing it under overhead cabinets. This will ensure proper ventilation.
- Lomi is best stored indoors between 15-30 Celcius (59-86 Fahrenheit), never in a garage or outside due to the risk of temperature changes and humidity.
-
Install Lomi’s refillable filters to prevent odors
-
Your Lomi Filter Refills box has enough activated charcoal to fill both Lomi filters. One is located at the back and the other is inside beside the bucket (see page 5).
-
Note that charcoal can be messy, so we suggest clearing a space next to Lomi to fill the filters. Keep a damp cloth nearby for cleanup!
To fill the back filter: -
Open the back panel of the unit and remove the rectangular filter box.
-
Slide the lid off the filter and pour in the activated charcoal from the box provided. Fill to the max fill line, keeping the remaining charcoal for the top filter.
-
Once the activated charcoal has been added, slide the lid back on and place the rectangular filter box back in the unit. Replace the back panel of the unit.
-
To fill the top filter:
-
Open Lomi’s lid. Remove the cylindrical filter and twist off the top.
-
Pour in the remaining activated charcoal to the max fill line.
-
Once the charcoal has been poured into the filter, twist the top back on and insert the filter back into Lomi.
Follow the same instructions to refill both filters after 45 cycles (on average every 3 months).
-
-

Lomi Bloom modes
Lomi has three different modes. Here are some details to help you select the one that best suits your needs.
Grow Mode
Why choose this mode
- Grow mode runs longest and at a lower temperature to create the highest quality
- Lomi Earth — a natural fertilizer that’s exactly what your plants crave! What can go in Grow mode is for fresh fruit & vegetable scraps and plant waste. See our ‘What can I put in Lomi’ quick guide on page 10 for more details. Do not put bioplastics or compostable commercial goods & packaging in Grow mode.
- We also recommend adding a LomiPod with 50ml of water to enhance your Lomi Earth with beneficial microbes that support plant growth.
What to do with the result
Toss it into your home compost, green bin, or garden at a 1:10 ratio with
soil. For best results in your garden, add more fresh food scraps & run a Grow
mode to create nutrient-rich Lomi Earth.
Eco-Express Mode
Why choose this mode
- This is the best mode if you’re looking for fast results and low energy consumption.
- What can go in Eco-Express mode is for food scraps and plant waste. See our ‘What can I put in my Lomi’ quick guide on page 10 for more details. And remember, add a diverse mix of waste to get the best result. Do not put bioplastics or compostable commercial goods and packaging in this mode.
What to do with the result
Toss it into your home compost or green bin. Or add more fresh food scraps &
run a Grow mode to create nutrient-rich Lomi Earth for your houseplants,
garden, and lawn.
Lomi Approved Mode
Why choose this mode
- This mode is your solution for Lomi Approved non-food compostable waste. With smart sensors that control grinding, heat, and moisture, this mode breaks down Lomi-approved bioplastics and compostable products much faster than traditional compost.
- What can go in Mix plenty of plant & food waste with Lomi-approved bioplastics and compostable products – we recommend a maximum of 10% non-food waste in each cycle. For the latest information go to lomi.com/blogs/lomi-approved.
- What to do with the result
- Toss it into your green bin.
Regular use
-
Open the lid and remove the bucket
Grab the handle of the Lomi lid and turn counterclockwise until the lid is in the unlocked position and can easily be lifted off. Take hold of the bucket handle and pull the bucket straight up. -
Add waste to the bucket
Refer to “What can I put in my Lomi?” on page 10 for guidance. -
Add a LomiPod for Grow mode

- Once the cycle is complete, all modes & cycle phases will light up, and Lomi will beep once. After 30 mins Lomi will return to standby mode with all lights off to save energy.
- Please see “How to feed your garden with Lomi Earth”.
Tips for performance
- The greater the variety of fruits and vegetables in your food waste and scraps, the better your Lomi Earth!
- If you notice an odor when Lomi runs, replace the activated charcoal in your filters. Filters should be refilled about every 3 months, depending on usage.
- Do not leave your unprocessed waste in Lomi for more than 2 days. Run a smaller cycle if necessary.
- If residue is stuck to the bucket after a cycle, add 2L of water and complete a Cleaning cycle. Refer to Page 11 for more details on how to clean your Lomi.
- Drain excess moisture from food waste before adding to Lomi. Do not add liquid other than 50ml of water with a LomiPod or when running a Cleaning cycle.
- Use LomiPods to fortify your Lomi Earth with beneficial microbes for your houseplants, garden, or lawn. Simply place a LomiPod on top of your food scraps, pour in 50ml of water, and run on Grow mode. To order more LomiPods, visit lomi.com/refills.
- Always mix Lomi-approved items with other food waste at a maximum of 1 part Lomi-approved compostables to 10 parts food waste (1:10 ratio).
- When adding cooked, oily, or high-sugar foods in Eco-Express or Lomi-approved modes, always mix with a substantial amount of fresh food waste.
What can I put in my Lomi?
Food waste can be added to all modes. A diverse mixture of food waste will allow Lomi to perform and give the best results. Never add only one kind of food waste. See below for what can and can not be put in Lomi.
- Only add these items to Grow mode to create the most nutrient-rich fertilizer for your plants.
- Add these items to Lomi Approved mode. Lomi Approved products & packaging meet rigorous testing standards. For an up-to-date list, go to lomi.com/blogs/lomiapproved.

How to care for Lomi
Cleaning your Lomi
Knowing how to keep Lomi clean is important so that it stays looking great and
continues to function at its best. We recommend cleaning the Lomi exterior
once a month or as frequently as you would clean any other kitchen appliance.
To keep your Lomi at optimal performance, clean the interior of the bucket
routinely.
- Ensure your Lomi is unplugged before cleaning.
- To wash the exterior of Lomi, including the lid, simply wipe with a damp dish cloth. If your Lomi is particularly dirty, use a small amount of dish soap. Finally, use a dry cloth to remove excess moisture.
- Never submerge your Lomi or Lomi lid under water. There are electrical components and any excess water would cause significant damage and could cause electric shock.
Cleaning the bucket
In general, the bucket is easy to empty after a cycle and ready to be filled
again. If you notice residue or build-up:
- The bucket can be easily removed and washed by hand with soap and water.
- The bucket is dishwasher-safe. Remove excess dirt and run on a hot cycle. Be sure to let it cool down before removing it from the dishwasher.
- Note that only the Lomi bucket is dishwasher safe. Do not put any other part of Lomi into the dishwasher.
- For a deeper clean, add 2L of water & start a Cleaning cycle which will run for about 1.5 hrs. For detailed instructions see Page 13. Be sure to let the bucket cool after a Cleaning cycle before removing from Lomi.
- Go to lomi.com/lomifaq for more tips on how to clean your Lomi.
Changing Lomi filters
- Lomi filters use activated charcoal to trap moist air, remove gases from circulation, and reduce any unpleasant smells from your food waste. To keep your Lomi running smoothly, refill both Lomi filters with new activated charcoal about every 3 months.
- To order more Lomi Filter Refills, go to lomi.com/refills.

Troubleshooting
How to feed your garden with Lomi Earth
Lomi empowers you to return valuable nutrients back to the soil. The nutrient- rich fertilizer that Grow Mode produces can be used to feed your garden, houseplants, and lawn.
- Thoroughly mix Lomi Earth with soil at a 1:10 ratio for use in your garden and houseplants.
- Spread directly on your lawn as top dressing. Use up to 10 lbs per 100ft2 of lawn per year.
- Lomi Earth increases water holding capacity and allows for less frequent watering. Don’t overwater plants to avoid mold.
- Lomi Filter Refills once used up, can also be used as an additive to your soil! Mix in a ratio of 1 part activated charcoal to 6 parts soil.
How does Lomi help the environment
It’s simple, Lomi helps you use your trash to save the planet.
- Lomi reduces the carbon footprint of your food waste by up to 65%, compared to throwing your waste in a landfill. oxygen), preventing the release of methane.
- Lomi repurposes the nutrients in food waste to store carbon. When Lomi Earth is used in combination with soil to grow plants, these nutrients are broken down by microorganisms to help feed plants. Elements like Carbon get stored in the soil which enriches the plants and the soil’s organic matter.
- Food waste breaks down in landfills anaerobically (without oxygen) and releases methane. When Lomi Earth is used for houseplants, gardens, or on your lawn, the organic waste breaks down aerobically (with oxygen), preventing the release of methane.
Frequently asked questions
For answers to all your Lomi questions, go to lomi.com/lomifaq
-
How loud is Lomi?
Lomi makes noise comparable to other small countertop appliances which is less than 60 dB. It’s around the same or less than a coffee maker or modern dishwasher. -
How many cycles can I run before I empty my Lomi bucket?
- You can run up to 3 cycles without emptying your bucket! In fact, adding Lomi Earth from the last cycle will improve the quality of the next cycle’s end product.
- Simply add more fresh food waste on top and start the next cycle! Just be sure to empty the bucket after 3 cycles because too much will strain the grinder.
-
If residue is stuck to the bucket what should I do?
- Avoid adding too many high-sugar foods to Lomi as that can result in sticky residue (see page 10 for recommended amounts). Always add a diverse mixture of food waste in each cycle.
- To clean stuck residue, wash the Lomi bucket with hot soapy water or run a Cleaning cycle. Refer to page 11 for how to clean your Lomi.
- NOTE: Do not submerge Lomi in water. Only the bucket is dishwasher safe and can be submerged.
-
What are LomiPods and why do I need them?
LomiPods are microbial compost accelerators, activated by 50ml of added water. They are carefully tailored to enhance soil quality for your plants. Using a LomiPod increases the number of microbes in Lomi Earth. -
My Lomi is squeaking, what can I do?
Avoid adding too many high-sugar foods to Lomi as that can result in sticky build-up under the grinder and cause a squeaky sound as it turns. If this occurs, simply soak the inside of the bucket with hot soapy water to loosen the residue, then wipe it away. -
Does my Lomi come with a warranty?
Register for a standard 1-year warranty in the Lomi app or at lomi.com/get- started. The warranty is non-transferable and proof of purchase is required to claim. For more details, go to lomi.com/pages/warranty. -
