OPTIONAL FIXED GEAR / FREEWHEEL INSTALLATION

I WANT TO RIDE MY FIXIE OR URBAN TRACK MODEL AS A FIXED GEAR INSTEAD OF FREEWHEEL. HOW DO I DO THAT?

Both our 6KU Fixie and Urban Track models can be ridden with your choice of freewheel or fixed gear (we ship them setup to freewheel) thanks to the flip- flop rear hub design. If you’d like to ride fixed instead of freewheel, here’s how to switch:

OPTIONAL FIXED GEAR/FREEWHEEL

a. You’ll need two optional tools that aren’t pictured in this Build Guide: a chain whip and a lockring tool.
b. Remove your rear wheel from the bike.
c. The side of the rear hub with the fixed cog/lockring has two separate sets of threads on it – the first, closest to the middle of the hub, has righthand (i.e. “normal”) thread and accepts the fixed cog. The second, closest to the outside of the hub, has left-hand (i.e. “reverse”) thread and accepts a lockring. The lockring stops the cog from threading off when you attempt to skid, pedal backwards, etc.

OPTIONAL FIXED GEAR/FREEWHEEL

d. Use your lockring tool and turn the lockring clockwise to remove it. Set aside.

OPTIONAL FIXED GEAR/FREEWHEEL

e. Use your chain whip and turn the fixed cog counter-clockwise to remove it. Set aside.

OPTIONAL FIXED GEAR/FREEWHEEL

f. Apply bicycle grease to the threads on the hub, fixed cog, and lockring.

OPTIONAL FIXED GEAR/FREEWHEEL

g. Install the cog by turning it clockwise. Tighten with your chain whip until you reach a hard stop.

OPTIONAL FIXED GEAR/FREEWHEEL

h. Install the lockring by turning it counter-clockwise and tighten until it stops against the fixed cog.
i. Re-install the rear wheel and go ride.
j. Fixed cogs can tighten even further through pedaling action the first time you ride the bike, so it’s a good idea to re-tighten the lockring after your first ride.
