Brief Description
- The tone quality and versatility of the Z5600a II make it an asset to any mic locker. This large-diaphragm condenser microphone has nine switchable polar patterns, ranging from omnidirectional to cardioid to figure 8, with six additional patterns in between. Central to the Z5600a II’s rich timbre is a 12AX7 tube, delivering stunning detail and flattering the source with enhanced harmonic character. In other words, this mic sounds huge! It has been praised for capturing incredible vocal tones, but the Z5600a II is engineered to excel in any sonic context.
- The Z5600a II is equipped with a switchable low-cut filter, as well as a switchable -10dB pad, making it just as suitable for recording a string quartet, or drum overheads, as it is for tracking vocals.
- Like all of our microphones, the Z5600a II is built by hand at sE Headquarters in Shanghai. We take pride in the attention to detail under which our products are crafted, therefore the entirety of manufacturing is done in our own facilities. We also individually test and measure the tubes for these mics to ensure optimal performance upon arrival.

Controls
The Z5600a II features both an Attenuation Switch and a Low-Cut Switch.
-
Attenuation Switch
The Attenuation Switch is located on the front-left side of the microphone. When engaged, the incoming signal is reduced by 10dB, helping prevent signal distortion and preamplifier clipping when capturing audio at close proximity and/or high sound pressure levels. -
Low-Cut Switch
The Low-Cut Switch is located on the front-right side of the microphone, inserting a low-cut filter at 50Hz when engaged. When switched to the left, the filter is removed for a flat frequency response. This low-cut switch is useful for reducing plosives, footfall noise, and especially rumble that might adversely affect the recorded signal. Additionally, the low-cut filter will help minimize the proximity effect when “close-miking,” i.e. placing the microphone a very short distance from the source. -
Pattern Switch
The Pattern Switch is located front and center on the microphone’s power supply. This 9-position switch allows a range of polar patterns from omnidirectional (left,) to cardioid (middle,) to figure 8 (right.) There are six pattern variations available between these three. This array of patterns makes it possible to tailor the balance of direct sound, versus ambient sound, that the microphone picks up.
Powering
- The included floor box contains the outboard power supply for the Z5600a II. No phantom power is required from an interface or microphone preamplifier.
- Before powering on, connect all required cables (IEC to power, XLR to preamplifier or interface, and 8-pin cable from floor box to microphone). Then turn the power on via the switch on the back of the Z5600a II floor box.
- For best performance, we recommend allowing approximately 15 minutes of “warm-up” time before recording. This allows the tubes within the Z5600a II to heat up and stabilize and reduces the risk of unwanted noise or distortion on your recordings.
Risk of damage
- Do not connect the microphone to any power supply other than the included Z5600a II power supply. Do not apply phantom voltage (+48VDC) from an external interface or preamplifier. This is the only way to ensure safe and reliable operation.
Safety and maintenance
Risk of damage
- Please make sure that the piece of equipment to which your microphone and PSU will be connected fulfills the safety regulations enforced in your country and is fitted with a ground lead.
Cleaning the microphone: The microphone should only be cleaned with a dry, soft cloth. It is best stored in the supplied wooden presentation box.
