  • Wire cutters
  • Ethernet stripping tool or a utility knife
  • RJ45 crimping tool
  • 15 mm wrench

Field Installable Adapter Kit Overview

Using the parts in this kit, you can create a custom-length cable to connect Garmin BlueNet devices.
NOTE: You must purchase bulk Garmin BlueNet Ethernet cable separately (010-12528-12) to create a custom cable.
The kit consists of two primary components:

  • Two sets of RJ45 crimp connectors and waterproof housings used to terminate the ends of the Ethernet cable, similar to legacy Garmin® Marine Network connectors.
  • Two adapters used to connect the terminated RJ45 connectors to the Garmin BlueNet devices.

Preparing the Ethernet Cable

Before you prepare the Ethernet cable to add the RJ45 connectors, you should route the unterminated bulk cable (sold separately) through the boat to the locations of the Garmin BlueNet devices you want to connect.

  1. Using wire cutters, cleanly cut the Ethernet cable 1 to the necessary length.GARMIN BlueNet 30 Gateway - Preparing the Ethernet Cable
  2. Remove the strain-relief nut 2 from the cable-connection housing 3 , and slide the nut onto the cut end of the Ethernet cable.
  3. Feed the cable through the connection housing.
  4. Using an Ethernet stripping tool to remove 16 mm (5/8 in.) from the cut end of the cable.
  5. Trim the drain wire to approximately 14 mm (9/16 in.), and fold the drain wire back over the jacket.GARMIN BlueNet 30 Gateway - drain wire
  6. Arrange the wires in order according to the Side A column in the table.
    Position| Side A| Side B
    ---|---|---
    1| White/Green| White/Orange
    2| Green| Orange
    3| White/Orange| White/Green
    4| Blue| White/Brown
    5| White/Blue| Brown
    6| Orange| Green
    7| White/Brown| Blue
    8| Brown| White/Blue
  7. Wrap the supplied copper tape around the drain wire and jacket.
  8. Using a pair of pliers, squeeze the copper tape to pre-form the cable jacket end.
  9. Trim the arranged wires to an even length, leaving approximately 14 mm (9/16 in.) from the ends of the wiresto the jacket edge.
  10. Install the Ethernet connector on the prepared end of the cable (Installing the Ethernet Connector, page 3).
  11. Repeat this procedure for the other end of the Ethernet cable, arranging the wires in order according to the Side B column in the table.

Installing the Ethernet Connector

  1. With the wires arranged in the correct order, insert the wires into the RJ45 connector until the ends of the wires touch the bottom of the connector.

  2. Verify the wires are in the correct order according to the table.

  3. If any wire is not in the correct position, remove the connector, arrange the wires in the correct order, and reinsert the wires into the connector.

  4. Using an RJ45 crimping tool, crimp the connector onto the wires.

  5. Align the release tab on the connector with the corresponding notch in the cable-connection housing, and push the cable through the connection housing until the connector is securely seated.

  6. Screw the strain relief nut onto the cable-connection housing and tighten it with a 15 mm wrench.
NOTE: Do not overtighten the nut.

  7. Install the O-ring onto the housing.
The cable is ready for use.

Assembling the Garmin BlueNet Adapters and Custom Network Cable

You must install RJ45 connectors on both Side A and Side B of the Ethernet cable before you can assemble the custom Garmin BlueNet network cable.

  1. Starting with one end of the terminated Ethernet cable 1 , connect one of the included Garmin BlueNet network adapter cables 2 , and tighten the locking ring.GARMIN BlueNet 30 Gateway - Adapters and Custom Network Cable
  2. Connect the other Garmin BlueNet network adapter cable to the other end of the terminated Ethernet cable, and tighten the locking ring.

You can now connect the assembled custom Garmin BlueNet network cable to the Garmin BlueNet devices.
