steute RF 96 ST Wireless Switch Instruction Manual
Use of the mounting and wiring instructions
Target group: authorised and qualified staff. All actions described in these
instructions may only be performed by qualified persons who have been trained
and authorised by the operating company.
- Read and understand these mounting and wiring instructions.
- Comply with the valid occupational safety and accident prevention regulations.
- Install and operate the device. Selection and installation of devices and their integration in control systems demand qualified knowledge of all the relevant laws, as well as the normative requirements of the machine manufacturer. In case of doubt, the German language version of these instructions shall prevail.
Scope of delivery
1 device, 1 mounting and wiring instructions, carton.
Intended use
The device essentially comprises three parts: the power supply with a lithium battery, the wireless part with an integrated interface for the external sensors and the connecting part for the external sensors. The power supply is provided by a non-rechargeable 3.6 V lithium thionyl chloride battery and a nominal capacity of 8.5 Ah. Exceeding the threshold triggers a wireless signal. The battery status is transmitted with every signal transmission. The receiver must conform to the sWave® protocol of the steute modules.
Mounting and wiring
Mount the device on an even surface. Install the device according to the mounting and wiring instructions of the receiver. The wireless range depends heavily on the local conditions. Conductive materials may strongly affect the radio signal. This also includes thin foils, e.g. aluminium laminations on insulation materials.
Allocation of locations and radio frequencies:
External devices
The sensor/switch connection is evident at the M12 plug-in connector. At this plug-in connector the inductive sensors RF IS M8/M12/M18- or M30 or other mechanical switches with gold-plated contacts can be connected. Therefore, the connecting cable Material No. 1189960 can be used that is available as accessory. The mechanical switches must be equipped with a NO/NC contact. It must be connected to plus (pin 1) and to the entry (pin 4). To connect external devices (sensors or switches): see section »Connecting external devices«. When installing the external device, follow its installation instructions.
Connectable devices:
Design of wireless range
The radio signal is attenuated on the way from the transmitter to the receiver. In addition, the radio signal is attenuated/influenced by obstacles. The degree of attenuation depends on the material of the obstacle. The following tables serve as a guide.

Radio operation
The transmission of a switching command from the transmitter to the receiver takes about 80 to 100 ms, based on the sWave® data transmission. The switching signal of a transmitter must not be generated at a shorter distance, otherwise this signal will be overlooked. The receiver must support the sWave® protocol of the statue modules. Each switching operation triggers a transmission from the radio unit. This also applies if several channels are activated or deactivated simultaneously. The current value of the battery voltage is transmitted with each transmission.
Safety
Do not use the device in connection with other devices whose direct or indirect purpose is to ensure life or health, or whose operation may pose a threat to humans, animals or material assets.
Maintenance and cleaning
With rough conditions, we recommend routine maintenance as follows:
- Removal of all dirt particles.
- Remove dust from sensor surfaces. Clean enclosure on the outside only. Clean enclosure with household cleaning agents. Do not use compressed air to clean.
Battery
The remaining capacity of a battery is hard to evaluate, but an empty battery can be assumed in case of doubt and with a battery voltage approx. <3.4 V at 20°C. In order to ensure reliable functioning, the battery must be replaced. To do this, the 5 screws in the housing cover must be opened using a torx-8 screwdriver. The battery should be inserted in the direction shown by the symbols on the cover. Use only the designated battery type or a complementary battery type. Depending on the country the device is supplied to, delivery will include an AA lithium battery SL-760/3.6 V/2.2 Ah in a battery adapter, or a lithium battery SL-2770/3.6 V/8.5 Ah without an adapter or a complementary battery type.
Spare part:
Disposal
– Observe national, local and legal regulations concerning disposal.
– Recycle each material separately. Dispose of possibly contained batteries
correctly.
Status signal
A status signal can be set by the user at various intervals with the jumper. To do this, open the enclosure by removing the 5 cover screws using a Torx 8 screwdriver. Take care to ensure sufficient ESD protection. Inside the enclosure a jumper is located on the circuit board. Adjust to the desired interval. For evaluation of status signals, steute provides special receivers.
After successful adjustment replace the enclosure cover and tighten the cover screws with approx. 0.45 Nm. The sealing must not be contaminated by any foreign bodies.
N.B.
The electrical connection may only be carried out by authorised personnel.
Subject to technical modifications. Reconstruction and alterations to the
device are not allowed. steute does not assume any liability for
recommendations made or implied by this description. New claims for guarantee,
warranty or liability cannot be hereby derived beyond the general terms and
conditions of delivery.
ESD
Ensure adequate ESD protection for all work that requires opening the unit.
