How to Train a Dog?
Notice before training
-
Avoid “Collar-Wise”
It is important that your dog is aware that the correction is coming from the collar. He will not misbehave when he wears the collar but does as he pleases when the collar is off. This is what we called “collar-wise”.
Tips: Before training, let your dog wear the electric collar for about 5-7 days (no more than 8 hours per day) so that he can be accustomed to the weight of the collar and believe it is just another normal collar. -
Timing is crucial
The more precise the timing is, the quicker your dog will make the association and change his or her behavior. -
Praise your dog
It will be helpful to praise your dog as soon as it responds to the collar. Reward it with a pat, by saying “good dog,” or with a special treat. -
Don’t let your dog know the secret
Don’t let your dog know that it is you causing the unpleasant sensation around its neck. Rather, let your dog associate the sensation with bad behavior. -
Know the intensity of each mode
Knowing the intensity of each mode will be helpful to control the stimulations.
SHOCK: Level 1 of shock mode is like getting bit by a small insect or Chinese Acupuncture. You can test it yourself, however, please be very cautious if you want to test a higher level.
VIBRATE: Level 1 of vibration mode is like the vibration of an incoming call of an iPhone. It is recommended to use the vibration mode first and use the shock mode last.
Setting the initial training level
To set the initial training level, you must first determine the lowest stimulation that will clearly get your dog’s attention by the following steps:
- Set stimulation at zero.
- Fit the collar properly on your dog’s neck and start the training.
- If he doesn’t focus on you, begin the stimulation and progressively increase the levels until he responds to the shock/beep/vibration.
Tips:
- At the point that your dog responds with a head tilt or ears prick up, or other signals, shows signs of responsiveness. This is the level at which you can begin your training.
- If your dog yelps or jumps shows signs that the level is too high.
- Every dog is an individual and unique. Some are more sensitive than others, and some learn more slowly or quickly. So be sure to test out each level on each individual dog.
Stopping Unwanted Behaviors
For this type of training, you need to set the collar at the predetermined stimulation level discussed above.
Steps:
- Let your dog roam in the area where he might misbehave, for example eating garbage.
- Get yourself out of his sight or at a discreet distance, and wait.
- At the instant your dog misbehaves, you press the button. This will send a signal to your dog’s neck so that he will associate the signal with his misbehavior. If he doesn’t respond, you should increase the level.
Tips:
Timing is crucial. Catching the unwanted behavior and sending the signal at the precise moment can drastically shorten training time.
Reinforcing Learning Behaviors
If your dog knows the command but responds inconsistently, or acts slower than
your requirement, an e-collar can sharpen his skill.
For example, you have taught your dog to come when called, but over time he
responds slower. You can communicate with him via the remote trainer so that
he immediately responds to your call.
Steps:
- Set the electric collar to the initial stimulation level and test it.
- Fit the collar on your dog’s neck along with his regular collar.
- Let him roam around the training area. Then command him to “come” (or “here” or whatever word he knows) and simultaneously press the stimulation button.
- The instant your dog moves toward you, stop stimulation and praise him.
- If he stops before he reaches you or turns away, repeat the command, and continue the stimulation. Again stop at the instant he runs to you and reward him by praising him/her or feeding him a treat. Repeat this for 3 or 4 times.
Tips:
- If he doesn’t get it the first few times, don’t give up, and do not increase the stimulation. Try to work on this a couple of times per day.
- During the training period, never give the command if you are not able to enforce it. Your dog has to make the mental connection between the shock/vibration/ beep to his behavior (may take a week or more for some dogs).
Altogether, both methods of stopping unwanted behavior and reinforcing learning behaviors can be applied to nearly every training scenario. Training collars are used to train the dogs instead of punishing them. Please use it properly with care. Electric collars can be a safe and effective tool to train, build communication, and strengthen your bond with your best friend. May this manual be helpful for you? Shock collars are not more effective than humane training. While punishment- based tools like shock collars can result in changes in your dog’s behavior, studies have shown that positive, reward-based training is just as effective.
Can you leave a shock collar on all the time?****
It is recommended to only use the shock collar for no more than 2 hours at a time each day during training sessions. It should be taken off outside of these times to avoid any potential issues that may arise from using the collar too often.
How long does a dog need to wear a shock collar?****
Besides, you should never put a shock collar, even on an adult dog, for more than two hours since the longer training sessions might make him depressed and anxious.
What happens when you use a shock collar on a dog?****
Using shock collars as a way to train your dog is what’s called “positive punishment.” This basically means that shock collars work by motivating your pup to avoid punishment, either through vibration, shock or another uncomfortable feeling.
How do I know if my shock collar is working?****
Touch both points on the collar while it is ticking or beeping. If you do not feel a shock, then there may be a problem with the receiver collar. Make sure you touch both points on the receiver at the same time when you hear the collar beeping. It will tell you definitively that the fence is or is not working.
