leaning and Sterilising

Warning! Hygiene is the top priority when handling breast milk and all parts which come into contact with it. You should therefore only use a pump that is clean and sterilised.
Before using the breast pump, always wash your hands thoroughly.
The following parts come into contact with your breast milk and must be immediately cleaned and sterilised after every use (see “5.1 Cleaning (Figure A in reverse order)” on page 28 and “5.2 Sterilising” on page 28):
10 Breast shield
11 Silicone cushion
12 Lip valve
13 Breast milk container
16 Feeding teat
17 Screw ring
18 Protective cap
19 Sealing disc
The following parts must never be cleaned and sterilised with water:
3 Pump unit
14 Mains adapter
15 USB cable
5.1 Cleaning (Figure A in reverse order)
Warning! To avoid the risk of electric shock:
Unplug mains adapter 14 from the wall socket before cleaning.
Caution! To avoid damage, carefully clean the lip valve 12. To sterilise the lip valve, we recommend just rinsing and boiling for 5 minutes. Cleaning implements may lead to damage.

  1. Dismantle the device as shown in figure B, proceeding in reverse from 7 to 1.
Warning! Never submerge the pump unit 3, the mains adapter 14, or the USB cable 15 in water, as this will damage the electrical contacts.

  2. Clean the following parts with warm water and a little washing-up liquid (or NUK Rinsing Agent). Then rinse the parts in running water:
    10 Breast shield
    11 Silicone cushion
    12 Lip valve
    13 Breast milk container
    16 Feeding teat
    17 Screw ring
    18 Protective cap
    19 Sealing disc
Warning! Milk residues may damage the product and result in microbial growth.
Caution! The parts should not be cleaned in a dishwasher – dishwasher detergents can cause product damage.
Note: When rinsing with dishes (for example), certain foodstuffs may discolour the material (e.g. carrot juice) or affect its odour (e.g. fennel tea). This has no effect on the fitness for use or safety of the bottle.

  3. Next, sterilise all parts (see “5.2 Sterilising“ on page 28).

  4. Wipe the pump unit 3 with a damp cloth.

5.2 Sterilising
Before sterilising, clean as described in the section entitled “5.1 Cleaning)”.
Warning! Risk of scalding during sterilisation.
Caution!

  • For boiling or steam sterilising (temperature above 80 °C), dismantle into each of its component parts and leave unassembled, otherwise deformation can result.
  • The pump unit 3, the mains adapter 14 and the USB cable 15 must never be sterilised in the above way, as this can damage the electrical contacts and cause deformation.
  • Incorrect treatment can damage the parts.
  • Before using again, allow the sterilised parts to cool and dry completely before reassembling.
  • When sterilising, do not use any chemical disinfectants.
  1. Use a NUK Steam Steriliser, following the operating instructions for the device. Alternatively,

  2. sterilise the parts in boiling water for 5 minutes.
Ensure there is sufficient water in the pan to avoid product damage. Alternatively,

  3. use a NUK Micro Express Plus Microwave Steam Steriliser for sterilisation in your microwave oven.
    • Only use the NUK Micro Express Plus Microwave Steam Steriliser for microwave sterilisation. Follow the operating instructions of the device.

8.2 Automatic switch-off
If no buttons are touched during operation (during an active pumping session), the pump unit will automatically switch to startup mode after 30 minutes. This does not apply when the Memory function is being used. In other words, once started, a saved pumping session will always run through until the end before the device switches to start-up mode.
If no buttons are touched when the pump unit is in start-up mode or pause mode, it will automatically switch off after 15 minutes.
8.3 Mobile operation
You can use the pump while you are moving about, using the shoulder strap to carry it. The shoulder strap is securely fixed to the pump unit.

  1. Should the shoulder strap need cleaning, detach it from the lug 1, wash it in water with a little soap or gentle detergent, and air dry it before reattaching it to the lug 1 on the pump unit.

Note: The shoulder strap 21 must not be sterilised as this might damage it.
8.4 Feeding expressed milk
Screw the feeding teat 16 onto the breast milk container 13 using the screw ring 17.
If your collected breast milk is not for immediate use, firmly seal the filled breast milk container 13 with the sealing disc 19 and screw ring 17 and store it in your refrigerator or freeze it (see “11 Storing Milk“ on page 34).

Tips for Successful Expressing

You will first need to get used to your new pump. Correct expressing takes practice.
9.1 Frequency
How often you need to express depends on the reason for expressing. If you will be apart from your child and/or want to sustain milk production, the natural breastfeeding rhythm should be maintained. You should therefore express 6 to 8 times daily, including once during the night. In all other cases you should express entirely according to your personal wishes and requirements.
9.2 Method
Milk should be expressed from each breast in turn. The different settings you can choose for your pumping session allow you to emulate the natural suckling action of your baby as closely as possible.

  • In the “stimulation phase”, the rhythm is rapid and urgent to stimulate the milk flow reflex. This emulates the suckling action of most babies, which will initially suck rapidly and avidly at the start of feeding.
  • In the “milk flow phase”, suction is slow and strong to ensure maximum milk flow. Again, this corresponds to most babies’ natural behaviour. As soon as a baby’s initial appetite is satisfied, it will change to a calm, slow and intensive sucking action while drinking its fill. If the milk flow drops:
  • Change breasts
  • Alternatively, you can repeat the”stimulation phase” in order to stimulate your milk flow reflex anew.

The amount of time needed to express milk will vary considerably from one person to another.
9.3 Quantity of milk
Don’t be surprised if it takes a little while for the milk to start to flow properly at first. This is not unusual. In fact it is quite normal because milk production adapts itself to daily requirements.
This means that the quantity of milk produced may vary considerably.

  • Ensure you drink plenty of liquid yourself.
  • Do not set suction strength too high. A higher suction strength does not increase the quantity of milk produced.

9.4 Let-down reflex
During natural breastfeeding, placing the baby on the breast stimulates the let-down reflex and milk begins to flow. You can also stimulate the let-down reflex as follows:

  • Find yourself a quiet place to sit, where you can relax fully when using the breast pump.
  • Adopt a comfortable and relaxed sitting position.
  • Place a warm compress on your breast for a few minutes, to relax the tissue, and massage your breast.
  • The let-down reflex triggers milk flow in both breasts simultaneously. You can use the NUK Breast Shell Set to collect breast milk leaking from the breast you are not currently expressing.

Hygiene tips

Hygiene is particularly important when using the breast pump. This applies to all the individual pump components as well as to your own personal hygiene. We recommend regularly washing your nipples in clean water. Where possible, avoid using soap on your nipples, as this can cause irritation.

Storing Milk

11.1 With Breast Milk Container
Breast milk may be chilled, frozen and defrosted in the breast milk container 13. The breast milk container 13 may also be used for warming and feeding. It is important that you follow the instructions about handling breast milk which is provided in “11.2 Important notes for handling breast milk” on page 35.NUK BP7 First Choice Plus Electric Breast Pump - sterilising
10 Warning! To ensure adequate hygiene at all times:
If your collected breast milk is not for immediate use, firmly seal the filled breast milk container 13 with the sealing disc 19 and screw ring 17 and store it in your refrigerator or freeze it.
Using a suitable pen or label, write the date and the time when the breast milk was expressed. Be sure to note the retention periods in “11.2 Important notes for handling breast milk” on page 35.
Caution! To avoid damage:

  • When freezing breast milk, do not fill the breast milk container 13 with more than 150 ml (5 fl oz), as breast milk expands as it freezes and the container could burst.

For a space saving solution you can use NUK Breast Milk Bags for freezing and storage of breast milk.
11.2 Important notes for handling breast milk

Breast milk Storage location Storage periods
Freshly expressed At room temperature Max. 3-4 hours
Refrigerator (not in door) 72 hours at 4 °C
Refrigerator freezer compartment 2 weeks
Upright/chest freezer 6 months at -18 °C
Defrosted, unopened Refrigerator (not in door) 24 hours at 4 °C
Defrosted, opened Refrigerator (not in door) 12 hours at 4 °C
Defrosting milk Gradually in refrigerator Approx. 24 hours at 4 °C
At room temperature followed by immediate feeding

If time is short, defrost container with breast milk in lukewarm water (max. 37°C), then feed immediately.|

Warning! To ensure adequate hygiene at all times:
If transporting chilled breast milk make sure that it stays chilled at all times, otherwise the milk could go off and be harmful to your baby. Use a cooler bag with ice packs, for example.
Defrosted, warmed or unused milk must be disposed of and not refrozen.
Warning! Risk of scalding and risk of destroying valuable nutrients:
Do not use a microwave to defrost breast milk, as this can destroy valuable nutrients and damage the container material (risk of explosion). Uneven heating may result in scalding!
If milk is heated excessively, you risk destroying the vitamins and other valuable nutrients it contains. There is also a risk of scalding for your baby.
Always check the temperature of your warmed up breast milk before feeding it to your baby.

  1. To achieve the correct drinking temperature of approx. 37 °C, put the container of defrosted breast milk in the baby food warmer.
Caution! The container must be open to prevent pressure build-up as the milk warms up.

  2. Shake the milk gently before feeding so that milk and milk fat are properly mixed again.

  3. If you express breast milk more than once within a period of 24 hours, the freshly expressed milk may be added to the previously cooled breast milk. However freshly expressed milk must be cooled down before being added to milk that is already cool. The temperatures must be the same (cold on cold).

Troubleshooting

Problem Reason Remedy
Pump does not work No power supply Battery operation: Check that the battery

is adequately charged (see “7.3 Battery operation (Nature Sense model only)” on page 30).
For mains operation: check that the mains plug and mains adapter are correctly inserted
When using a USB power source: Check whether this can deliver at least
2 amperes of current.
Lip valve missing, incorrectly positioned or damaged| Check that the lip valve is correctly positioned
If it is damaged, use the replacement lip valve supplied
Breast milk container is full and lip valve is already touching the expressed milk| Replace breast milk container
No suction or suction level too low| Check that the lip valve is correctly fitted.
Make sure that the breast shield forms a complete seal around your breast.
Filter is wet| Remove filter and allow more time to dry or use dry replacement filter (see
“5.3 Special cleaning of tube and filter” on page 29).
Pump suction is weak| Low battery power| Check whether battery power is sufficient (see “7.3 Battery operation (Nature Sense model only)” on page 30).
Suction strength is set too low| Increase the suction strength until you achieve the best results (see ‘Setting the suction strength” on page 31).
Silicone cushion incorrectly positioned and not properly flush with the breast shield| Ensure that the silicone cushion is completely flush with the breast shield
No vacuum can be built up| Ensure that the breast shield is completely flush with the breast
Filter blocked| Clean or replace fitter (see “5.3 Special cleaning of tube and fitter” on page 29).
Filter is wet| Remove filter and allow more time to dry or use dry replacement filter (see
“5.3 Special cleaning of tube and filter” on page 29).
Pump suction too strong| Suction strength is set too high| Reduce suction strength (see “Setting the suction strength” on page 31).
Pump making strange noises| Lip valve unable to cope with milk flow volume| Reduce suction strength (see “Setting the suction strength” on page 31). If you have a high milk flow volume, a low suction strength will be perfectly adequate to achieve good results.
Check whether the breast milk level has already reached the lip valve. If so, replace the breast milk container with an empty one.
Milk has entered the tube| Immediately switch off the pump unit and clean the tube and the filter (see
“5.3 Special cleaning of tube and filter” on page 29).
Nature Sense: The display shows
symbol
First Choice+: Symbol X is lit in the display| Inadequate power supply: Not enough current supplied through mains adapter or USB power source| Mains power operation:
Check that the mains adapter is properly plugged into the power supply socket and the USB connector is firmly pushed into the port on the pump unit.
Check that you are using the correct mains adapter included in the NUK packaging.
When using a USB power source: Ensure that the USB power source used can deliver at least 2 amperes of current. If the USB power source is too weak, it cannot be used.
Replacement parts needed (filter, lip valve)| | Contact your local Service Centre (see “Contact addresses” on page 186).
