Instructions

Please note, these are guidelines – experience with American coated papers, proper care, and test hanging prior to proceeding are crucial. Every site & installation is different; wallpaper materials do vary. Please use your discretion.
Our wallcovering is printed on top quality paper using high end inks & materials by a hand printed or digital process creating our unique look. Minor irregularities are to be expected as in any hand-crafted product. The following process should be followed.

  1. Inspect rolls: Ensure all rolls are the correct pattern and in the same dye lot, unless you have approved CFA’s from different dye lots. If unacceptable, do not cut or hang.

  2. Test hang: We suggest hanging two strips and then inspecting for any problems.

  3. Prepare the walls: This paper may allow some show through. All surfaces must be smooth and sound, free of dust, and free of peeling paint. Interior latex paints must be cured with a product such as Gardz. New plaster must be properly cured (60-90 days) and feel cool to the touch.
For Old Walls: Remove existing wallcoverings if applicable. Sand, wash and clean thoroughly to disinfect. Remove adhesive and eliminate mold and bacteria. Patch and sand as necessary to achieve a smooth surface.
Prime with a universal wallcovering primer (T9000, Shieldz, 1-2-3,etc).
    Do not use oil-based primers!
For New Walls: Ensure each wall is smooth, free of dust, has a room temperature of 55 degrees F or warmer for at least 24 hours prior to installation, and properly primed using the instructions above.

  4. Use of a Liner. Use of a pulp or acid free (for wallcoverings printed with metallic inks) liner is recommended in certain cases, specifically older walls. Visit https://www.wallliner.com/ for more information on liner or to order!

    • Use an absorbent pulp liner paper as one of the purposes is to absorb excess moisture and mitigate bubbles. Bubbles may be smoothed out with your smoothing tools.
    • For dark background papers, the use of a similar color lining paper is recommended.
    • Writing on the wall to aid installation should be done with light pencil or similar color pencil to the ground of the wallcovering. Never use a ball point pen or marker as they may show through.
  5. Trim Correctly: The trim lines are for guidance. Trim so the pattern matches. Use a sharp new blade, brass bound straightedge and zinc strip. Trim just into color if double cutting, otherwise trim just inside trim marks.

  6. Adhesive/Paste: The use of a clear lightweight premixed adhesive or a clear strippable adhesive works best with our products. Do not use clay-based adhesive. Wheat and cellulose adhesives are not recommended. A clear light paste is best. Do not dilute adhesive.

  • One example for use: Professional 880 from Sherwin Williams. 7. Application: Use either a pasting machine or roller, apply an even coat of adhesive over the entire back of each strip of wallcovering. Be sure edges are evenly and adequately covered. Book the pasted sheet and allow adequate soak time (about 5 minutes) before installing. Soak time is essential to allow the pasted sheet time to relax and expand in order to prevent bubbles, wrinkles, and possible shrinkage after drying. 8. Installation: Use caution if rolling seams. Do not allow paste to get on the face of the wallcovering. If any should get on the face, remove at once with a damp, not wet sponge using a flicking action rather than scrubbing. Blot with a soft cloth. Do not wipe. Do not allow paste to dry on the face of wallcoverings as permanent damage may occur. There may be some rub-off for dark colors.

Typical Issues

  • Issues with the design matching?
Did you check unpasted rolls to see if they match before they are hung and/or pasted? Was it trimmed correctly? Are the ceiling & walls square?

  • Are the edges lifting?
Was the lining installed? Ensure paste goes to the edge and your fingers have not taken paste off of the edges. You may use your smoothing tools to smooth down the seams. Sizing pre-determined seam areas with adhesive will create a stronger bond.

  • Bubbles?

    • Did you use a good absorbent liner paper?
    • Did you use the correct paste?
    • No extra moisture? Remember: Moisture is our enemy and can cause bubbles and wrinkles!
    • Allow booking time (5-10 minutes) to expand all areas of the paper evenly (printed and unprinted areas may expand at different rates – especially with heavier metallic inks in concentrated areas) You may smooth the bubbles out with your smoothing tools.
    • Try misting the back of the sheets with a spray bottle containing warm water, letting it relax for a minute or two and then pasting if excessive bubbling takes place.
