CHARGING YOUR HAIR CLIPPER

CORDLESS USE

  • Before using your hair clipper for the first time, charge it for 24 hours.
  • You can charge your hair clipper in or out of the charging stand. Either plug the adaptor connection directly into the bottom of the hair clipper, or by placing the hair  clipper in the stand and plugging the adaptor connection into the back of the stand.
  • Ensure the product is switched off.
  • Connect the charging adaptor to the product and then to the mains. The charging indicator will light up.
  • If the product is not going to be used for an extended period time (2-3 months), unplug it from the mains and store.
  • Fully recharge your hair clipper when you would like to use it again.
  • It is not advisable to use this hair clipper directly from the power outlet when it has been fully charged, however, while using the hair clipper in cordless mode, if there is  a noticeable drop in power, you can use the hair clipper directly from the power outlet.
  • To preserve the life of your batteries, let them run out every six months then recharge for 24 hours.

CORDED USE
Connect the charging adaptor to the product and then to the mains.
When the cord is connected to the mains, a charging LED light is displayed on the hair clipper.
CAUTION: Extended mains (corded) only use will result in the reduction of the battery life.

HOW TO USE

BEFORE STARTING TO CUT

  1. Inspect the hair clipper making sure that it is free from hair and dirt.
  2. Ensure that the hair is thoroughly dry and tangle free
  3. The blades on your hair clipper should be oiled before every haircut.
Simply place a few drops of oil on the teeth of the blades. Use only the light grade oil supplied or a suitable alternative like sewing machine oil. Only this type of oil is suitable due to the high oscillation speed of the blades on your Remington hair clipper. Do not use hair oil, grease or any oil mixed with kerosene or any solvent as the  solvent will evaporate and leave the thick oil, slowing the blades.
If oil is not applied to the blades or only a small amount of oil is applied, this may cause cutting problems. Blades will wear prematurely and not cut properly if they are not sufficiently lubricated. There may also be a pulling sensation on the hair.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR HAIR CUTTING
NOTE: For even cutting, allow the trimmer comb/blade to cut its way through the hair. Do not force it through quickly. If you are cutting for the first time, start with the  maximum length trimmer comb, until you know how short you would like your hair to be.
NOTE: The comb guide lengths described for use in the steps below are an example only, if you want a longer or shorter hair cut you will need to adjust the comb guide lengths to suit your requirements.

STEP 1 – NAPE OF THE NECK
a. Use 3mm or 6mm guide comb.
b. Hold the hair clipper with the blade teeth pointing upwards. Begin starting at the centre of the head at the base of the neck.
c. Slowly lift the hair clipper, working upwards and outwards through the hair, trimming just a little at a time.
STEP 2 – BACK AND SIDE OF THE HEAD
With the 9mm or 12mm guide comb attached, cut the hair at the back of the head.
STEP 3 – SIDE OF THE HEAD
a. With the 9mm or 12mm guide comb attached, trim sideburns.
b. Then change to the longer 25mm guide comb and continue to cut to the top of the head.
STEP 4 – TOP OF THE HEAD
a. Attach the 25mm or 30mm guide comb, cut the hair on top of the head against the direction in which the hair normally grows.
b. For longer hair on top, use scissors. Lift the hair on top of the head with styling comb. Cut over the styling comb with the hair lifted or hold the hair between the fingers to lift it and cut it to the desired length.
c. Always work from the back of the head.
STEP 5 – THE FINISHING TOUCHES
a. Use the hair clipper without an attachment comb for close trimming around the base and sides of the neck.
b. To produce a clean straight line at the sideburns, reverse the hair clipper. Place the reversed hair clipper at right angles to the head, tips of the blades lightly touching the skin and then work downwards.
SHORT LENGTH SELECTION LEVER
Your hair clipper has a short length selection lever located on the back of the hair clipper, under the blade set. Adjust the lever to change the closeness of the cut gradually  and also to improve the effectiveness of the trimming guide attachments. Using the lever also extends the life of the blades because a different cutting edge is used in each setting.

CLEANING & MAINTENANCE

To ensure long lasting performance of your hair clipper, clean the blades and unit regularly. Always keep the blade cover on the hair clipper blade.
NOTE: Ensure that the hair clipper is turned off and unplugged when cleaning.

AFTER EACH USE

  1. Ensure the hair clipper is switched off and disconnected from the mains household power outlet.
  2. Brush the accumulated hair from the blades. Do not submerge the hair clipper in water.
  3. To clean the body of the unit, wipe with a damp cloth and dry immediately.
  4. Gently brush the remaining hairs away from the hair clipper comb and hair clipper blade. Do not rinse the cutter assembly under water.

EVERY SIX MONTHS
At regular intervals the blade set should be removed and cleaned.

  1. Ensure that the hair clipper is empty of power, is switched off and disconnected from the mains household power outlet.
  2. Hold the hair clipper in one hand so that the blades are at the top, and the front of the hair clipper is facing you.
  3. Place your thumb of the opposite hand underneath the blades at the front of the unit, hold the back of the blade set with your fore finger and middle finger and firmly press upwards with your thumb. The blade set will detach from the hair clipper.
  4. Brush the accumulated hair from the hair pocket and blades.
  5. Replace the blade set by inserting the notch (on the inside at the bottom of the blade set) into the groove of the hair pocket and firmly push down with the palm of your  hand until you hear an audible ‘click’ and the blade set is locked into place. (Please be aware that the short length selection lever on the back of the blade set is not the  notch which needs to be placed into the groove).

STORAGE

When not in use, unplug the hair clipper and store it out of reach of children in a safe dry place. Never wrap the cord around the hair clipper as this will cause the cord to wear prematurely and break. Handle the cord carefully for long life and avoid jerking, twisting or straining especially at the plug connections.

TROUBLESHOOTING

The hair clipper does not work when turned on:
Hair clipper must be charged for a full 16 hours, or use hair clipper while plugged into wall.
Hair clipper cutters do not move:
The cutting unit may be dirty and clogged. Clean the unit as directed in Cleaning & Maintaining section.
Hair clipper does not hold charge:
Fully discharge battery by running hair clipper until it stops; then follow recharging instructions (see section on Charging Your Hair Clipper).

  3. Rotary trimmer
  4. On/Off switch
  5. Battery compartment
  6. Detail groomer comb with 5 length settings

REMINGTON HC5005AU Ultimate Haircut Kit - fig3

INSERTING THE BATTERY

Your Remington® Personal Groomer runs on one “AA” ALKALINE battery.

  1. To open the battery compartment, turn the base of the unit approximately 1cm to the left and pull it off.
  2. Insert the battery into the unit, positive end first.
  3. Replace the base and turn it 1cm to the right to lock it into place.

Battery cautions

  • Use of non-alkaline batteries will impair the unit’s operating performance.
  • The battery should not be left in the unit if the unit is not in use for long periods.
  • To prevent battery corrosion, the unit should be stored in a dry environment.
  • Dead batteries should be removed immediately and disposed of properly.
  • Do not use rechargeable batteries with this appliance. The lower voltage in rechargeable batteries impairs the performance of the cutting unit.

HOW TO USE

Before using your groomer:

  • Beard, moustache or sideburn hairs should be dry. Avoid using lotions before using your groomer.
  • Be certain that the hair length attachment is at the desired setting. When first using, you may want to begin on the highest setting (longest hair) to prevent trimming off too much hair initially.
  • Comb hairs outward so they are at their maximum height and facing in the same direction.

CHANGING THE ATTACHMENT HEADS
This model comes with interchangeable attachments. You may want to use the detail groomer & comb for your beard, moustache, neckline & sideburns. The linear trimmer can be used for eyebrow hair trimming, and the rotary trimmer can be used for nose and ear hair grooming.

To change heads:

  1. Turn the groomer off.
  2. Detach cutting head by turning it to the right to the unlocked position and pulling it off.
  3. Once the previous head is removed, attach the other head by placing it on top of the unit and turning it to the left to the locked position.

Turning on your groomer:
Use the ON/OFF switch to turn your groomer on and off.
Note: Always remember to turn on the groomer before you insert it into your nose or ear to avoid painfully snagging hairs.

TO TRIM BEARDS OR MOUSTACHES

  1. Before you begin, comb your hair in the direction that it grows so that the hairs are at their maximum height and facing in the same direction.
  2. Place the adjustable 5 position comb attachment on the detail groomer’s head and determine how much hair you wish to cut off. Remember, until you are familiar with  using the groomer, it is better to select a longer hair setting initially in order not to trim too much hair.
  3. Turn the groomer’s power switch ON and begin trimming.
  4. Start trimming under your chin and following your jawbone line, work toward your ear and upper beard line using an upward motion. Allow the adjustable 5 position comb attachment to follow the contour of your face.
  5. When finished trimming, turn the power to OFF.

TO TRIM THE EDGE OF A MOUSTACHE

  1. Remove the adjustable 5 position comb attachment.

  2. Moustache hairs should be dry and avoid any waxes or lotions before using the groomer.

  3. Use a styling comb or a small comb to comb the hairs straight for trimming.

  4. Hold the groomer with the cutter blade facing you.

  5. Trim hairs using a downward motion following the direction of your hair growth or
trim against your hair growth, whichever is preferred.

  6. After achieving the desired length, use a downward motion to blend moustache hairs.

  7. Turn groomer OFF.

Note: Since all hairs do not grow in the same direction, you may want to try different trimming positions (i.e. upwards, downwards or across). Practice is best for  optimum results.
Note: Use slow light pressure. Too much pressure may trim off more hair than desired.

TO TRIM SIDEBURNS

  1. Comb sideburns following the direction of your hair growth.
  2. Be certain that the adjustable 5 position comb attachment is placed on the detail groomer and set to length.
  3. Hold groomer vertically with the front of the groomer facing you.
  4. Trim sideburns using a downward motion.
  5. Turn groomer OFF.

TO TRIM THE NAPE OF YOUR NECK

  1. You will need a hand mirror for this operation if performing alone. The mirror is not necessary if trimming is performed by a second person.

  2. Remove the adjustable 5 position comb attachment.

  3. Use your fingers to lift the hair at the base of your head up off your neck. Your index finger should be covering the roots of the hairs you are lifting to prevent accidental  removal by the groomer.

  4. Using your other hand, hold the groomer horizontally to the base of your neck with the cutting unit facing up and move the groomer along the length of the neck until it  touches your finger covering the roots at the base of your head.
Repeat this procedure for the entire area of the neck. Be sure to move the unit slowly when performing this operation and to keep the hair roots at the base of your head out  of the way of the groomer.

  5. Use the hand mirror to inspect the results of the operation and ensure that all hairs along the nape of the neck have been trimmed.

TO DEFINE THE BEARD LINE

  1. Remove the adjustable 5 position comb attachment.
  2. Hold the groomer with the trimmer cutting blade facing you.
  3. Start with the edge of the beard line and with the cutting blades resting lightly against your skin.
  4. Use motions towards the edge of the beard line to trim the beard line to the desired shape in the facial areas and around the neck.

TO REMOVE HAIR FROM THE NOSE

  1. Select the rotary trimmer.
  2. Turn the groomer on.
  3. Insert the cutting unit gently into the nostril.
  4. Rotate the groomer in a circular motion around the opening of the nostril.
  5. For best cutting efficiency, gently move trimmer in and out of the nostril as you rotate the groomer.
  6. Do not insert the rotary trimmer more than 6mm into your nostril.

TO REMOVE HAIR FROM EYEBROWS

  1. Select the linear trimmer.
  2. Turn the groomer on.
  3. Gently guide the cutting unit to stray, unwanted hairs along the eyebrow line or protruding from the eyebrow itself.
  4. Move the unit slowly and carefully, so as not to accidentally cut any hairs you do not intend to trim.

Note: Do not apply excessive pressure as this damages the groomer and may cause skin injury.
CLEANING & MAINTENANCE
Your groomer is designed to give you years of comfortable use. To ensure that you get optimal performance from your groomer, follow these simple cleaning and lubricating tips:

  • After each use, brush or blow accumulated hair from the cutting unit.

Rinsing Your Groomer

  • Your groomer can be rinsed with cool or warm water. Just hold the unit’s head under the faucet – it is not necessary to remove the head first. Do not use hot water.
  • If the groomer needs additional cleaning, the cutting head can be removed by turning it 1cm to the right and pulling it off. Then blow out the accumulated hair or rinse it  more thoroughly under running water. Afterwards, shake excess water from the cutter head, making sure that all parts are held together.
  • Replace the head in the same position as it was removed, turning it 1cm to the left until it locks into place.

Lubricating the cutters

  • After rinsing the unit, apply a drop or two of mineral oil or baby oil to the cutting teeth.
  • Don’t apply too much oil, or it may spray.
  • Finally, point the groomer down and away from you, and turn it on. This spreads the oil evenly and expels any excess.

This product conforms to radio frequency interference requirements.
