Jamie Quick 1862 Crochet Garters From The English Women’s Domestic
These crochet garters are from the English Women’s Domestic Magazine, featured in 1862. They can be made in either wool or silk, and are worked around an elastic cord. I first, made these in fingering/sock-weight wool, and they were so small that they fit my four-year-old! I made my second pair in sportweight silk, and they fit very snugly. Just a heads up… the pattern is worked around the foundation row. So, you will be working in the round. Gauge isn’t all that applicable, as it depends on how tight you yank the elastic. I will give you my measurements, but you may have to play around to get the proper fit.
The Modern Pattern
Gauge:/Fit My finished garter measured 8 inches closed. It was a snug fit around my leg at 12.5 inches. You will want to measure right below your kneed, above your calf. That area is a bit narrower than the calf, and that will help keep your garter up!
If you need something larger, the pattern is a seven-stitch repeat!
Materials
- Wool or Silk Sport Weight Yarn
- Size D Crochet Hook
- Elastic Cord
- 2 Period Buttons
- Optional: Matching lace weight yarn and size 6 hook for the border
Foundation
With your center color, you want to chain 98 stitches.
-
Row 1: Tie on your elastic cord. Working it under your single crochet, single crochet across the chain. Keep yanking your elastic as your work the row. At the end of the row, chain 12 for your buttonhole.
-
Row 2: Tie on your second color, you will be single crocheting across the bottom of your chain. Begin pattern.
3 purple single crochet, 4 gray single crochet repeat from to- On corners, it is easier to just keep it purple. Make sure you start your pattern evenly across from one another.
- When you get to the buttonhole, you put 20 single crochet within the 12 chains.
- When turning corners, you will need to add some extra stitches. 2-3 stitches to round each side is generally a good number.
-
Row 3: Keep in pattern, but move the repetition so that two grays are above the purple, and two purple is above two gray stitches.
-
Row 4 – 5: Work in gray
-
Row 6: Work in purple
-
Row 7: The original pattern called for a picot row. This looked really bad in my opinion. To create sport-weight silk, I actually used two strands of silk lace yarn together. So, I ended up using one strand of lace and a six 6 crochet hook. And I worked a shell around. sc, hdc, 3dc, hdc, sc the 3 dc where all worked in one stitch.
I hope you enjoy your garters! As always, my patterns are copywrite@2022. You may make and sell any items from my patterns. The pattern is not to be sold .
