Installation

  1. Refer to 4010 – 2007-2022, Mercedes Sprinter 4×4, Engine Skid Plate instructions prior to installing the transmission / transfer case skid.
  2. If 4010 engine skid has already been fully installed on the vehicle, follow steps 3-4 below. If simultaneously installing 4010 engine skid and 4011 transmission / transfer case skid, skip straight to step 5
  3. Begin installation by loosening the front 3/8-16 carriage bolts and M8-1.25 flat head socket cap screws which secure the main aluminum engine skid plate to the chassis.
  4. Remove the rear 3/8-16 carriage bolts attaching the engine skid to the chassis. Remove the 401001-03 and 401001-04 rear cross member spacer.
  5. Position the 401101-01 main skid plate as shown. It is designed to rest on top of the main aluminum engine skid plate. Use a floor jack to raise and support it in place as shown below.
    • Avoid covering any of the mounting holes with the jack.VAN-COMPASS-4011-Transmission-and-Transfer-Case-Skid-Plate-FIG-1
  6. Align the three front mounting holes and install the 401001-04 rear cross member spacers at the corner mounting holes of the skid plate.
    • NOTE – the 401001-03 spacer washer will not be used.
    • Installation of the spacers can be tricky. The easiest way to install them is to insert them from the front corner of the engine skid plate and lay them flat on top of the transmission / transfer case skid. Rotate the spacer up and into place after laying it them on the skid plates. See images below.
    • Once a spacer is lined up and in place, install the 3/8-16 x 4.5” long carriage bolts provided with the 4010 engine skid plate and start a nylock nut with a washer under it before moving onto the next side.VAN-COMPASS-4011-Transmission-and-Transfer-Case-Skid-Plate-FIG-2VAN-COMPASS-4011-Transmission-and-Transfer-Case-Skid-Plate-FIG-3
  7. Install the 7/16-14 x 1.0” long carriage bolt included with this kit in the middle hole location on the skid plate. Again, start the nylock nut and use a washer under it.
  8. Install the 401101-02 cross member brackets as shown.
  9. Note; there are two sets of holes in the skid plate to attach the cross member brackets. 2007-2018 NCV3 models will use the forward mounting holes, 2019-2022 VS30 will use the rear mounting holes. The cross member brackets should self-align with the appropriate mounting holes.
  10. Insert the 7/16-14 x 1.5” long carriage bolts from the bottom and start the nylock nuts. Again, be sure to use a washer under the nut.
    • NOTE** the brackets are designed to pull down and form into place around the tubular cross member, do not be alarmed if the brackets do not fully contact the skid plate when first installed. The brackets will pull the skid plate up into place as well when the hardware is tightened.VAN-COMPASS-4011-Transmission-and-Transfer-Case-Skid-Plate-FIG-6
  11. Tighten the 7/16-14 nuts securing the carriage bolts using a 5/8” socket or wrench. Snug all 4 bolts.
  12. Tighten the 3/8-16 nuts securing the carriage bolts using a 9/16” socket or wrench. Snug all 4 bolts.
  13. Remove the floor jack supporting the skid plate.
  14. Torque all hardware in the following order:
    • 7/16-14 Carriage bolts – 50 ft-lbs (67 N.m)
    • 3/8-16 Carriage bolts – 20 ft-lbs (27 N.m)VAN-COMPASS-4011-Transmission-and-Transfer-Case-Skid-Plate-FIG-7 VAN-COMPASS-4011-Transmission-and-Transfer-Case-Skid-Plate-FIG-8 VAN-COMPASS-4011-Transmission-and-Transfer-Case-Skid-Plate-FIG-9

PRODUCT SAFETY WARNING

Van Compass LLC strongly recommends the installation of products be done by a certified mechanic. If this does not occur, be certain the person(s) installing the product read, understand and follow all instructions and warnings pertaining to the application before installation. Do not add, alter, or fabricate any factory or aftermarket parts to increase vehicle height over the intended height of the Van Compass LLC product purchased. Mixing component brands is not recommended. Installation of suspension lift kits or any other lifting kits or devices will raise the center of gravity. For this reason, Van Compass LLC urges that extreme caution be used when encountering driving conditions which may cause vehicle imbalance. Furthermore, the driver’s field of vision and judgment will not be as good due to the height of the vehicle. Due to the installation of larger tires, the speedometer will read slower than the actual speed being traveled and more distance will be required to stop the vehicle. It is the owner’s responsibility to caution and warn any potential driver of the vehicle about these driving and handling conditions. Van Compass LLC will not be held liable or responsible for damages or personal injuries resulting from the use of lifting devices and or related products. The tires and rims should be changed to sufficiently increase the vehicle’s total overall width and stability to help accommodate lifting devices.

Van Compass LLC aftermarket suspension products and accessories modify a vehicle for uses which exceed conditions anticipated by the vehicle manufacturer. The uses include the high performance demands required during off-road. These conditions vary in the degree of extremity and cannot be controlled by the vehicle or product manufacturer. If the components within the suspension system or accessories become worn due to frequent and/or extreme use, the safety and reliability of the vehicle is at risk. The maintenance of aftermarket equipment to ensure the vehicle occupants safety is entirely your responsibility. Do not purchase Van Compass LLC products unless you are willing to accept this responsibility. Do not install any Van Compass LLC suspension products or accessories unless you feel competent at installing the product without causing present or future injury to yourself or other vehicle occupants; seek an authorized installation center.
Most states have some type of law limiting vehicle height. The amount of lift allowed, and how the lift can be achieved, varies greatly. Several states offer exemptions for farm and commercial registered vehicles. It is the vehicle owner’s responsibility to check state and local laws to ensure that their vehicle will be incompliance. Van Compass LLC reserves the right to make changes in design, materials and specifications as deemed necessary without prior notice and without assuming obligation to modify any product previously manufactured. Obligation or liabilities will not be assumed with respect to similar products previously advertised. This Release of Liability and Product Safety Warning has been read and fully understood by the undersigned and has been explained to me.
