JBA PERFORMANCE EXHAUST 1400S 5.6L V8 Exhaust Cat4Ward Headers
PLEASE READ BEFORE PROCEEDING
PerTronix©thanks you for choosing a JBA Performance Exhaust Product. To realize the potential of JBA’s engineering and excellent fit, Please Read and Understand these instructions completely prior to starting the installation. Check that you received all the parts listed on the parts list, if you have any concerns, please contact PerTronix before continuing. Headers will have the part number stamped in the flange. Work Smart – Work Safe! Most Header and Exhaust Installation are best performed on a lift. If a lift is not available, raise the vehicle and support on quality Jack Stands on level ground. Do not rely on a jack! We use sealing beads on all our headers. The raised bead creates a better seal virtually eliminating leaks if installed properly. It is important to install all header bolts lightly snug and then tighten to factory torque specs starting in the center and working outward. Before starting, allow the vehicle to cool, disconnect the battery, and spray a penetrating oil on all hardware and fittings that will need to be removed . Once you remove your manifold, clean the sealing surface on the head of any old gasket debris or carbon build up.
INSTALLATION OF THESE HEADERS REQUIRES WELDING READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE ATTEMPTING INSTALLATION
- It is recommended that you remove the front tires and plastic inner fenders for this installation.
- On 16 & Newer vehicles, remove the plastic shields covering the transmission and oil pan. All years, Unplug the 02 sensors, Unbolt the factory exhaust from the catalytic converter assemblies on each side and move the exhaust back a few inches. On 16 & Newer, unplug and remove the Pyrometers.
Driver’s Side
- On 16 & Newer, remove the braces from the frame to the cross member.
- Mark the Steering U-Joint positions to the shaft and box, and remove the steering shaft.
- Support the engine using a floor jack with a block of wood under the oil pan. Use caution when doing this as you are going to remove the motor mount and need to make sure the engine will not shift.
- With the engine properly supported, unbolt the two bolts attaching the mount to the frame and 4 bolts attaching it to the engine block. Now lift the engine approx.1 ”.
- With the engine raised, loosen the (4)screws attaching the heat shield to the factory manifold.
- Remove the 02 sensor from the factory manifold.
- With the 02 sensor out of the way, remove the heat shield. It will not come out easily. Extreme force may be required.
- Remove the nuts attaching the factory manifold to the cyl. head. Be careful, the nuts round off easily.
- Remove the manifold/cat assembly from the truck.
- The Catalytic Convertor is welded to the factory manifold and needs to be cut from the factory manifold. The following steps are critical to retain the integrity of the Emissions system and must be done properly for the vehicle to remain legal for road use.
- Make a mark 3/16 of an inch above the factory weld at the convertor. This measurement is critical to maintain the cat in the original factory location. Now carefully make your cut as squarely as possible.
- Temporarily install your new JBA Header (3 nuts will do).
- Lower the engine and reinstall the motor mount.
- Bolt the driver side convertor to the exhaust system, then move the entire exhaust system forward into place. Reconnect the passenger side manifold/cat assembly to the exhaust. The exhaust/cats should easily bolt back into the factory position with no binding or force necessary. This is important to maintain original location of the cats for proper running and engine calibration. Make certain that the exhaust system is all the way back into original position.
- Align the driver side header collector with the catalytic converter so that the convertor slips into the collector. With it properly aligned and in place, tack-weld the two together securely enough that it cannot move.
- With the header and convertor tacked together, unbolt the convertor from the exhaust system, remove the motor mount, raise the engine up again, and then remove the header/convertor assembly.
- Finish welding the header and catalytic convert together. Make sure there are no pinhole leaks. (Avoid prolonged exposure to high temperature and heat build up by welding in segments and allowing cat assembly to cool)
- Install the header/cat assembly on the driver side using the supplied gasket.
- Lower the engine and reinstall the motor mount securely.
- Reinstall the 02 sensors and Pyrometer.
Passenger Side
- Remove the engine oil dipstick tube by unbolting from the engine and then pulling and wiggling the tube out of the boss. If equipped, remove the oil cooler heat shield.
- Repeat steps 2 through 18 to install the passenger side header.
- Reinstall the oil dipstick tube and bolt it to the engine.
- Lower the engine and reinstall the motor mount bolts securely
- Bolt the exhaust to the catalytic convertors
- Check that all bolts are tight. Make sure that all wiring, fuel lines, transmissions lines, brake lines etc are clear of the headers and the exhaust and relocate as necessary.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Start the engine, check for leaks and test drive. Then let the engine cool and then re-torque the header bolts.
- After 100 miles check and retighten the header bolts.
