CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Regularly clean your Backyard Hibachi Grill between uses and especially after
extended periods of storage. Ensure that the Backyard Hibachi Grill and its
components are sufficiently cool before cleaning.
Never handle hot parts with unprotected hands. In order to extend and maintain
the life and condition of your Backyard Hibachi Grill, we strongly recommend
that the unit be covered when left outside for any length of time, especially
during the winter months.
BURNER MAINTENANCE:
In most circumstances, burning off the residue after cooking will keep the
burner clean. The burner should be removed and cleaned annually or whenever
heavy build-up is found in order to ensure that there is no blockage (debris,
insects) in either the burner portholes or venture tubes. Use pipe cleaner to
clear obstructions. A wire brush can be used to remove corrosion from the
burner surfaces. When refitting the burner, be careful to check that the
venture tubes of the burner fit over the valve outlets.
WOOD MAINTENANCE:
You want to keep your wood beautiful and sealed. Keep out of direct sunlight
for extended periods of time and keep surface dry and cleaned. You will need
to refinish the wood with a marine grade sealer/varnish every 2-3 years to keep
your Backyard Hibachi looking like the day you bought it.
STORAGE
We recommend keeping your grill under a covered area and protected from the
elements. Direct sunlight is not ideal for the finish on the wood. If rain gets
on it, try to dry it after the rain stops. Do not leave standing water in the
cooking area or you will get surface rust, which can however, be easily
cleaned, just like when you first got your grill. We also offer a grill cover to
protect your Hibachi Grill.
Annual checking and tightening of metal fittings is recommended. Store the
Hibachi Grill in a cool dry place. Cover the burners with aluminum foil in
order to prevent insects or other debris from collecting in the burner holes.
If the Hibachi Grill is to be stored indoors, the gas bottle must be
disconnected and left outside. The gas bottle should always be stored outside,
out of reach of children, and in a dry, well-ventilated area away from any
sources of heat or ignition.
CLEANING
Our cooktops are pre-seasoned and come with a protective coating of oil on
them. You will want to thoroughly clean your cooktop before cooking. We
recommend using a scouring pad with a powdered cleaner, such as Barkeepers
Friend or Comet, to clean the steel cooktop.
Rinse well with water. Use a paper towel and/or grill scraper to spread clean
cooking oil all over the cooktop. You are ready to cook!
You do not need to use the cleaners every time you cook. Usually, adding water
and steam and scraping the grill clean as it deglazes is the easiest way to
keep your hibachi cooktop primed and seasoned for cooking. Repeat adding water
and scraping until your cooktop is clean and then wipe away excess water with
a paper towel. Use a paper towel to spread cooking oil all over the cooktop to
protect your seasoned steel. See this blog post for a video about everyday
cleaning for your grill.

clean-your-backyard-hibachi
Every time you cook, you will also want to clean your wood with a wood-safe household all-purpose cleaner. If cooking oil splatter is left on the wood, it can start to degrade the finish over time.
HIBACHI CARE & SEASONING
Follow these simple cleaning and seasoning steps for optimal performance and long life of your Backyard Hibachi Grill. We strongly recommend that the unit be covered when left outside for any length of time, especially during the winter months.
WHAT IS SEASONING?
Seasoning is the preparation of steel or cast-iron cookware for use.
There are two reasons for seasoning: To coat the cookware to prevent rust and
to create a natural, permanent stick resistant cooking surface.
Seasoning is an easy, but very important first step when using the Backyard
Hibachi Grill. Unlike synthetically coated grills, steel and cast iron can be seasoned repeatedly, constantly restoring the cooking surface.
Remember: Seasoning is an ongoing process that takes time and repeated use before a hibachi grill develops a shiny, black surface like your grandmother’s cast iron cookware. The more often you cook on and season your hibachi grill, the more non-stick the surface will become.
SEASONING AND CLEANING
FIRST TIME: Backyard Hibachi Grills are pre-seasoned with cooking oil to
prevent rust and damage during shipping. For first time use, wash the hibachi
grill in hot, soapy water. THIS IS THE ONLY TIME YOU SHOULD USE SOAP ON THE
HIBACHI GRILL. Rinse and dry completely with paper towels. Proceed with
seasoning instructions.
AFTER EACH USE: To clean the hibachi grill after each use, scrape gently with a spatula and wipe down the hibachi grill surface with a paper towel. For tough food residue, pour hot water onto the hibachi grill surface and let it boil the residue off. Wipe again with a paper towel and dry completely. 1⁄4 cup of table salt can also be used to buff off stuck on food. Proceed with Seasoning Instructions.
SEASONING INSTRUCTIONS: Remove all food debris with spatula or scraper. Apply a very thin, even coating of oil (flax oil, extra virgin olive oil, vegetable oil, peanut oil, etc.) to the hibachi grill surface. Use a paper towel to spread the oil evenly across the cooking surface of the hibachi grill. Turn on hibachi grill to medium-high. You will start to see the oil smoke and the hibachi grill top will discolor. This is good. Keep heating the hibachi grill until the smoke stops (15-25 Minutes). Turn the hibachi grill off and allow it to cool down. Repeat this 3-4 times as needed. Store in a cool, dry place with a hibachi grill hard cover and or soft cover.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
STEP 1 BURNER INSTALLATION
Your Auto Spark Liquid Propane Burner will be packed separately in its own box
beneath the grill. Remove the burner from its box and look at the underside of
the cooktop. You will see 3 brackets in the center. The burner slides in from
the left side with the knob pointing out towards you. You may have to wiggle
it a bit to get it in and straight.
STEP 2 PROPANE TANK INSTALLATION
Put the propane tank into the holder. Loosen the screw as needed to insert
properly.
- Latch in the propane tank’s base onto the hook for safe holding of the tank.
- Tighten the screw to hold the tank firmly in place. Don’t overtighten.
STEP 3 DRIP PAN INSTALLATION
Your stainless-steel drip pan slides into the brackets to the left of the
burner for easy clean up and is dishwasher safe.
STEP 4 CONNECT BOTTLE REGULATOR
CONNECTION
Attach the propane bottle regulator connection to the propane tank. Make sure
propane is turned to the off position at all times until all connections are
secured. STEP 5 CONNECT HIBACHI BURNER
CONNECTION
Attach the Hibachi burner connection to the Auto Spark Liquid Propane Burner.
Hand tighten and then use the provided wrench to create a secure tight
fitting.
STEP 6
See cleaning instructions on page 5-6 before turning on your hibachi Grill for
first use.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q. What if my hibachi grill starts to rust?
A. If rust appears on the hibachi grill surface, rub it off with steel wool or
low grain sandpaper and re-season the surface. Always completely dry your
hibachi grill before storing and keep away from rain and sprinklers.
CUSTOMERS IN HUMID OR COASTAL CLIMATES MAY REQUIRE MORE FREQUENT SEASONINGS AND THE USE OF HEAVIER COOKING OILS TO AVOID RUSTING AND CORROSION.
Q. What types of cooking oils can I use to season my hibachi grill?
A. We recommend the following oils for seasoning purposes: olive oil,
vegetable oil, canola oil, coconut oil and sesame oil. Lard can also be used
to season the hibachi grill top.
Q. Can I use dish detergent to clean my hibachi grill?
A. Grease cutting dish detergents will erase the seasoning on the hibachi
grill. For tough spots use table salt and hot water.
Q. Why does my hibachi grill surface look dull and dry instead of shiny and
black?
A. Season is a continuous process. Over time and the more often you season
your hibachi grill, the more shiny, black and non-stick it will become.
Q. What are the dimensions and what does it weigh?
A. The Backyard Hibachi Grill is roughly 56″ long x 38″ wide and x 37″ tall.
The actual cook surface all grill models is 33.5″ x 22″. Depending on the
model they weigh between 150 and 200 pounds.
Q. Why is the surface not perfectly flat?
A. The grill surface is not a flat griddle. It will slightly concave over
time. There is nothing to be worried about, the grill will work the same and
it allows for the grease and oil to flow to the center for cooking.
