Pre-installation

HEALTH AND SAFETY
Take all necessary steps to ensure your safety and the safety of others:

  • Ensure adequate ventilation or mechanical dust extraction when cutting or drilling.

  • Ensure the timber and fibre cement sheets are well supported when cutting and nailing.

  • Wear appropriate safety equipment, clothing, footwear and eye protection.

  • Use all tools in accordance with relevant instruction manuals.

  • Ensure all tooling is sharp.

  • Plan and monitor a safe approach for working at height; select and use the right equipment. Do not step directly on the sheets between roof purlins. Always use stepping ladders or crawling boards supported by a minimum of three roof structural elements.

  • Clear the work area of any obstruction before work starts.

HANDLING AND STORAGE

Handling
Take care when transporting, handling and storing system components to avoid damaging the components.

Unload fibre cement boards by hand or using a forklift. Use two people to carry sheets on edge, holding near each end. Do not lean sheets against vertical surfaces as this can cause the sheets to bend.

Storage
Store boards in a flat area undercover and off the ground. Place on a pallet or supported by timbers running the length of the boards. Store rolls of wrap in a dry location and undercover.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT REQUIRED

Install the system using standard carpentry tools and equipment.
Use tools in accordance with good trade practice and supplier’s instructions.
Masons Barricade weather defence fibre cement boards can be cut with tungsten carbide tipped tools.

Installation

PREPARATION

  • Step 1 Building consent documentation
Access and view building consent documentation. Access and view details in the building consent documentation or access the relevant details from Masons NZS 3604:2011 should be available for reference

  • Step 2 Confirm the scope
Confirm the proposed use is within the scope and limitations of the passTM.

  • Step 3 Check related building work
Confirm the timber or concrete floor structure is constructed in accordance with the building consent or NZS 3604:2011.

  • Step 4 Install the timber framing
Install framing in accordance with the building consent. Framing must be minimum 90 x 45 mm SG8 timber framing. Studs must be at 400 mm or 600 mm maximum centres and nogs must be at 800 mm maximum centres.
Fix framing to floor using hold down method specified in the building consent. For wall bracing, the hold down method must be GIB HandiBrac® to frame and bottom plate with M12 Bowmac screw bolt for concrete or M12 coach screw or equivalent fixing to bottom plate.
Ensure the framing is straight and true and within framing tolerances as described in section 2 and Table 2.1 of NZS 3604:2011.

  • Step 5 Install fibre cement board
Fit Masons Barricade weather defense fibre cement board to framing and fix using 40 mm x 10 g CSK SS clout fixings at 150 mm centres, 12 mm minimum edge distance and 50 mm corner distance.

  • Step 6 Install wrap
Install the Masons Barricade weather defense self-adhesive wrap.

  • Step 7 Install penetration seals, if applicable
Install the Masons Penetration seals around pipes, ducts and services.

  • Step 8 Install over door and window openings, if applicable
Where Masons Barricade weather defense is to be used as a temporary cladding system, the fibre cement sheeting can be installed over door and window openings and can be removed when required to complete the external cladding system. Install temporary timber members to support larger openings.
Install Masons Barricade WD self-adhesive wrap over the cut edges once the openings have been made with a minimum lap of 150 mm and install self-adhesive tape to all laps.
Where installing an adjoining member such as brackets or cleats to be fixed to the Masons Barricade weather defense surface, weather seal the back surface with double sided butyl construction tape or closed cell PVC self-adhesive medium density construction foam. The foam must be compressed at least by 30%.
A primer may be required on porous surfaces such as cast concrete.

  • Step 9 Install remaining components to form the fire rated assembly, if applicable

    • Apply Hilti CP 606 Firestop acrylic sealant to all joins, if a fire rated assembly is required.
    • Install R2.2 Pink® Batts® glass fibre insulation between framing members.
    • Install 13 mm GIB Fyreline®.
Install all products in accordance with the product supplier’s instructions.
