They served to secure the laptop stand in the box and prevent it from shifting.

Yes, I think it would be, however since the center has fan holes, you’d have to write on a clipboard or some other hard, homogeneous material.
Can the legs be entirely straightened so that you may place it, say, in soft sand or mud?
Yes, however, you would then have sand and dirt in the joints, which most likely would severely shorten the product’s lifespan.
Does this have the strength to support a computer monitor?
It perhaps depends on the monitor’s size. It carries my 20-pound laptop and mouse on the side tray extremely well. It has made me quite pleased.
Does this stand come with a USB cord?
Yes, it does, although it is only 10 to 12 inches long.
If my grandson is seated in a stroller, is it broad enough? If my grandson sits on a bean bag chair, is it broad enough?
Yes, it is broad enough, and all you have to do is put in the dials and adjust them to a convenient angle.
