ROTHENBERGER RODIA-VAC Vacuum Pump Rodia
Safety Notes
Intended use
The vacuum pump RODIA-VAC is to be used with ROTHENBERGER diamant-drilling
systems for suction on smooth surface. It is designed to be used as an air
suction pump and is not to be used for other gases and certainly not for
liquids. It is equipped with a water separator in case of use where the
presence of water is essential (e.g. diamond core drilling).
This device may only be used correctly as described!
The vacuum pump has been designed and built for intermittent duty
applications. It is equipped with an overload cut-out which trips
automatically and cuts off power when safety limits are reached. However, we
recommend that the vacuum pump duty cycle never exceed 50% and continuous
operation never exceed 15 minutes.
The vacuum pump may be connected to several accessories. For technical
specifications and detailed instructions, please see the instructions provided
for each accessory equipment.
General Power Tool Safety Warnings
WARNING! Read all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations and specifications provided with this power tool.
Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock,
fire and/or serious injury.
Save all warnings and instructions for future reference.
The term “power tool” in the warnings refers to your electrically-operated
(corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.
- Work area safety
- Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered and dark areas invite accidents.
- Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
- Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.
- Electrical safety
- Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
- Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
- Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will in-crease the risk of electric shock.
- Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges and moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.
- When operating a power tool outdoors only, use an extension cords suitable for out-door use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
- If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current de-vice (RCD) protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.
- Personal safety
- Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A momentary lack of attention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
- Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
- Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energizing power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.
- Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
- Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
- Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
- If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.
- Do not let familiarity gained from frequent use of tools allow you to become complacent and ignore tool safety principles. A careless action can cause severe injury within a fraction of a second.
- Power tool use and care
- Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
- Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
- Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or remove the battery pack, if de-tachable, from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
- Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
- Maintain power tools and accessories. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool’s op-eration. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.
- Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
- Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc., in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.
- Keep handles and grasping surfaces dry, clean and free from oil and grease. Slippery handles and grasping surfaces do not allow for safe handling and control of the tool in unexpected situations.
- Service
- Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.
Special safety instructions
- Observe the operating instructions for the diamond coring machine used.
- Avoid restriction or blocking of the hose, e.g. pinching, kinking or entry of dirt.
- Keep the ventilation slots on the pump clean and unobstructed. Ensure adequate free space at the air exit in order to avoid overheating of the appliance.
- Never allow the pump to stand in water.
- The pump should stand on a dry horizontal surface when in operation and should be se-cured to prevent possible movement.
- The vacuum will be maintained for a short time after failure of the electric supply or malfunc-tion of the appliance. Should this occur, stop working immediately and check the pressure gauges on the pump and vacuum base plate. Secure the workpieces to prevent falling.
- Do not modify the appliance or tamper with its parts.
- Use only genuine spare parts.
- Empty the water separator each time before transporting the pump.
- Ensure that the workplace is well lit.
- Check that the mains voltage is the same as the voltage rating stated in the CE plate.
- Learn how to stop the vacuum pump suddenly and how to use all controls.
- Before any intervention, empty the pressure tank and disconnect the power supply, to pre-vent any sudden unexpected re-start of the appliance.
- After any maintenance operation, make sure all components have been fitted correctly.
- Keep children and animals away from the working area, so as to avoid any injury caused by devices connected to the vacuum pump.

- Do not hit the fan wheels with metallic or sharp objects as they could break during operation.
- Do not operate the vacuum pump without air filter.
- Do not alter any manipulations to the safety and adjusting devices.
- Do not connect a hose which has a flow rate lower than that of the vacuum pump.
Technical Data
The
noise level during operation can exceed 85 dB (A). Wear hearing protection!
The noise level have been measured in accordance with a standardized test.
Function of the Unit
Initial operation
The place should be free of dust and color fog, well-tempered and opened for fresh air. Do not place the vacuum pump near a heating or directly in the sunlight. In order to ensure proper ventilation, the vacuum pump shall be positioned at least at 50 cm from any obstacles. Select a dry and horizontal surface and prevent it from movement!
Before the setup of the machine you have to check the following points!
- The surface for a low-pressure mounting must be not porous and must be flat and free of cracks. This kind of mounting can’t be use, if this is not the case.
- Check the voltage, frequency and tension mentioned and compare with you own at side.
- If the motor will not start within 5 seconds after switched on, you have to pull out the plug immediately, motor and compressor to be checked carefully. The vacuum pump could be blocked in such a case.
- An often fall out of the motor could be a too small diameter of the cable which on a long dis-tance of cable will deduct the power of the vacuum pump. The cable diameter should be at least 1,5mm². Avoid pinching or kinking the supply cord and hose.
- Check the water level in the water separator and empty it if necessary.
- Wall outlet should be suitable for the power cord plug.
If any adaption is necessary, in accordance with local voltage requirements, have the plug replaced by a qualified electrician!
Before carrying out the electric connection, make sure that the main switch is OFF, position “0”. Never stop the vacuum pump by unplugging it!
Motor protection switch
In the motor there is a motor protection switch built in. If that switch is
getting in function for any reason (over load, low-tension voltage, over
heating caused by malfunctions) and cuts off power, you can start the machine
again by pressing the release knob (previously wait about 5 minutes).
If this release knob cannot be fixed immediately you have to wait until the
motor has cooled down.
If the motor protection switch is getting often in function a specialist has
to check it.
Pressure gauge
- Regularly check the pressure gauge while you are working !more than -0,8 bar: vacuum pressure is adequate less than -0,8 bar: vacuum pressure is inadequate
Interrupt your work, as soon as the vacuum pressure is no longer adequate.
Check the system for leakage or kinks in the hose.
Let the caused damages be repaired by the manufacturer or an authorized
service center (see 6.).
Water separator
- Regularly check the water level in the water separator!
Built-in safety valve protects the pump from water being drawn into the pump
when the water container is full and the vacuum pressure will drop.
To empty the water separator see 5.
Switch off
- Turn off the main switch (OFF).
- Pull out the supply cord plug from the power outlet.
Vacuum set fastening with vacuum pump
- Place the cellular rubber ring in the groove incorporated in the base plate of the drill rig.
- Connect the vacuum set (No. FF35710 = 170 PRO-C / 131 DWS; No. FF35740 = 270 PRO-C / 202 DWS) to the vacuum pump by means of the quick coupling.
- Connect the vacuum pump to the mains supply and switch on.
- Position the base plate and insert the vacuum connecting piece with 3-way ball valve in the elongated hole of the base plate.
- Press firmly on the hand toggle of the ball valve and activate while simultaneously pressing the base plate onto the ground.
Operate the ventilation button in the foot plate to re-position the drill rig on the ground. Max. drill range with vacuum technique: horizontal Ø 150 mm, vertical Ø 250 mm.
The vacuum technique is only to be used on smooth ground, as an adequate vacuum can only be produced here. Never suck in on plaster! The drill rig could break away from the wall!
In the event of a power failure, the safety tank on the RODIA-VAC vacuum pump
ensures that the equipment remains firmly attached to the ground for approx. 1
2 minutes. This time period, however, is strongly dependent on the
impermeability of the system and the condition of the ground.
Check the negative pressure constantly during drilling work. The pressure must
not fall below 0.8 bars!
Remove the equipment from the wall immediately in the event of a power
failure.
Danger due to the equipment falling off. Vacuum neutralized. Only work using
slight feed pressure!
Care, Maintenance and Cleaning
In order to keep your vacuum pump in good working conditions we recommend you to perform periodical servicing operations. Before performing any maintenance opera-tion, switch off the vacuum pump and make all air in the tank release.
- Do not use solvents, running water or pressure jet/spray systems – this may endanger the electric safety.
- Keep the grip free from oil and grease.
- Regularly clean the ventilation slots with soft and dry brushes.
Vacuum pump:
All 3000 operating hours the cylinder heads have to be screwed off and the
compressor tank and the valves have to be checked. Complete valve plates or
cylinder heads could be delivered ex. Stock. Also the vacuum compressor block.
After 10000 operating hours the vacuum pump should be checked completely.
Tank:
By unsealed tube connections the pressure can go down. Frequently check the
tube connec-tions are necessary to provide pressure fall down.
Air suction filter (monthly cleaning):
The air suction filter should be cleaned frequently after a period of non-
working or when used in very dusty environment.
The filter part has to be renewed after some time.
- Unscrew the screws and remove the motor casing by lifting.
- Take out the filter cover.
- Rinse the filtering component with water and soap, and make sure that it is totally dry before to fit it again.
Do not operate the vacuum pump without the suction filter fitted, as foreign bodies or dust could seriously damage the inside components.
Condensate drainage (weekly):
- Open the valve by turning it anticlockwise.
- Arrange the tank so as to make the valve mouth turned downward.
- Place a container under the valve.
- Keep the vacuum pump in such position until all air has flown out completely. The condensate is not polluted and can be eliminated through the sewer system!
Empty the water separator:
- Remove residual vacuum.
- Rotate the container from the water separator (OPEN) and pull it down (bayonet connection).
- Empty container.
- Check the ball float and possible pull it down (move free in the cage).
- Clean the top edge, insert the container again and rotate CLOSE.
- Check the securely seating of the water separator.
