After unpacking
After unpacking you should first check that the contents are complete. In addition to this instruction manual there should be:
- 1 MusicBox speaker box with black handle
- 3 handles in various colours for choice
- 4 silicone feet (self-adhesive, just install if the device is used by children over 3 years of age!) 1 charge cable USB A -> USB C
Advice on location, care and safety
- To connect your MusicBox with a mains power supply, use the provided charging cable and employ a USB power supply (1000mA or more) or a PC USB connector.
- If your MusicBox is not in use for a longer period of time, be sure that your system is disconnected from mains power and switched off by the volume control (10) (operation LED (11) turned off).
- Do not use alcohol, benzene, thinner or acids to clean the cabinet.
- Do not place your sound-system near radiators, airconditioning or radio-controlled systems.
- Avoid leaving the sound-system in permanent strain such as direct sunlight, extreme moist or dryness, exceptional cold or heat, mechanical vibrations or shock.
- Do not open the cabinet, contact qualified personnel only.
- In case there is audible noise, possibly caused by strong radio waves (e.g. by mobile phones) we recommend to turn down the volume control of the unit or switch it off.
- Deliberate harm to the equipment is not covered by the guarantee.
- Please contact your dealer in case of technical problems.
Cabinet
- The cabinet is made from rigid bamboo wood, the surface is treated by wax and oil and does not contain any separable laquer.
- Bamboo is a natural product. Caused by the natural fibres material, there can be changing textures and colour gradients. We have no influence on these material properties of the natural fibres. These properties do not constitute grounds for complaint.
- When placing the device on sensitive surfaces, pressure points or discoloration may be caused by the case or case feet. Please note this to avoid damage.
Handle
- The handle is made from flexible, high quality silicone material. It can be removed by pulling its screwholes on each side over the the retention pin‘s head.
- For re-installation of the handle place the handle‘s screwhole below the retention pin, hold the handle‘s end and pull a little, to slip the handle over the pin head. The handle then will return to its original size and shape.
Preparation for operation
Rechargeable battery
-
The MusicBox incorporates a powerful rechageable Lithium-Ion battery, which can allow many
hours of operation thanks to its high capacity. The battery (15) is placed below the MusicBox‘s removable backcover. -
Before first operation, we recommend to recharge the battery. Connect a power supply (USB
charging power supply or PC USB power) by the provided charging cable to the MusicBox‘s DC socket (14) at the backside. During the charging procedure, the red chrging control LED will light (13). Once the red charging control shuts off, the charging is finished. -
The MusicBox can be operated during the charging procedure.
-
If the playback is stopped during operation and the operation LED starts flashing, the battery is empty and requires new charging in the next time.
-
It is not required to discharge the battery before new charging. It is not a benefit for the battery lifetime always to keep the battery fully charged. Also partial charging is ok and no disadvantage for battery lifetime.
-
To replace the battery, unlock the battery plug (16) and pull it out of the connection socket and loosen the holder in front of the battery. When installing the new battery, fasten the holder again and insert the battery plug firmly into the corresponding socket.
USB stick
- All contents for the playback functions of the MusicBox require the usage of a USB stick, as it is available in most households nowadays. You can well use any existing USB stick of limited capacity. All USB sticks with common FAT file system and a capacity of up to 128GB can be used. We recommend a USB stick with 1GB or more, which should just be used for MusicBox.
- MusicBox expects the following subdirectories in the USB stick‘s root:
- music: for music files
- book: for audiobook files
- recordings: here, the MusicBox stores your own microphone recordings
- These subdirectories are mandatory for operation and need to be created by the user. Please make sure to copy the exact writings and care for lowercase letters! Other contents of the USB stick will be disregarded.
- If you need to prevent the microphone recording function, simply do not create the recordings subdirectory or erase the recordings subdirectory.
- The MusicBox uses MP3 and WAV audio format files.
- The files in a subdirectory are played in the order in which they were copied to the USB storage! With any PC/notebook/tablet you can copy existing music and audiobook files into the related subdirectories of the USB stick, erase or move out the files. Please remember always to keep a backup copy of all your files outside of your PC!
- Since some file managers on the PC do not display the real memory order, you can view it in the console (“command prompt”) with the DIR command.
- For installing the USB stick into the MusicBox, open the backcover (unscrew by a coin) and plug-in the USB stick (18) into the MusicBox‘s USB terminal. After the next power-on, the MusicBox can directly call the USB stick contents under the related categories.
Playback volume limitation
-
The MusicBox provides enough output power for elevated listening volume. But you can adjust,
how loud the MusicBox shall playback when the volume control on the top is set to maximum. To setup a limited maximum volume, MusicBox offers a hidden control (17) below its backcover. -
To set the maximum allowed volume, open the backcover (unscrew with a coin) and locate the small volume limiter knob.
-
For adjusting the maximum allowed volume, playback a typical audio track by the MusicBox and turn the volume control on the top to maximum position. The hidden control (17) on the backside
of the MusicBox can now be adjusted as much as you like it useful for a maximum volume. Your child shall only operate the normal volume knob on the top, so it cannot overdrive your limited setting. You have the control, which volume can be emitted by this device. -
Please always keep the backpanel screwed tight, if you offer the MusicBox to your children for playback.
Controls and connectors
- All controls of the MusicBox can be found on its top control panel. The speaker is placed on the front under the grille cover. The connectors are placed on the backside.
- Power-on and -off is operated by the volume knob (10).
- The buttons behind the volume knob are for the selection of the playback content category: 1 = music (green), 2 = playbook (white), 3 = microphone recordings (purple) and to select sleep mode and the Bluetooth function.(4, blue)
- Right to the buttons, you can find the operation indicator LED (11), which changes its indication colour according to the chosen operation mode.
- Left from the buttons there is a small opening for the built-in microphone (5).
- The buttons left and right from the volume knob control the playback functions for the chosen audio track: 6 = Play/Pause (yellow), 7 = Rücksprung/Rücklauf (black), 8 = Skip/Vorlauf (black) as well as the recording function (9, red).
- The connection panel on the rear offers the headphones output (3.5mm stereo phono socket) (12), the charging indication LED (13) and the charging socket (5V, USB C)(14).
Playback functions for USB stick contents
- Power ON the device with the volume control (10) by turning the control clockwise away from its power-off position. Chose a middle position setting.
- Select the playback contens: once you pressed one of the category buttons (1 / 2) music or audiobook, the previous played track in this category will be started just from the position, where the user has left it before. This can ensure even long tracks or stories can be continued step by step easily without starting from the beginning.
- To listen to the latest “recording“ track, press the recordings button (3).
- With the Play/Pause (6) button the playback can be stopped or continued.
- The buttons skip back (7) or skip forward (8) jump to the next track in the currently selected category. When pushing the button for a longer time, the time position in the current track is returned or forwarded. With this function, you can playback a just played passage again or skip a passage, without re-starting the complete track.
- Once all audio files have been played completely, the playback starts again from the beginning.
Recording functions
- The button REC (9) starts the microphone recording. Once the red operation LED lights continous, all will be recorded, what is recognized by the built-in microphone (5).
- The recording can be interrupted by short pressing the Play/Pause (6) button (red blinking LED) and will be continued by another short press on the Play/Pause button.
- To finish a recording press on the REC button (9) again, the LED will flash and the device expects the new selection of a playback or recording function.
- To do another recording, push the Play/Pause (6) button while red LED is flashing.
- To directly playback the just finished recording, simply press the category button for recordings (3).
- For recordings, the last recording will be memorized instead of a playback position.
- Recording files are stored in a compressed WAV format.
- If you need to prevent the microphone recording function, simply do not create the recordings subdirectory or erase the recordings subdirectory on the USB stick.
Sleep function
- By a short press on the button Zzz (4) the sleep function will be activated or deactivated. Once the sleep function is activated, very slow red blinking indicates it. Playback will be continued but gradually the playback volume reduces lower and lower, within 30 minutes.
- By pressing the sleep button (4) again during the 30 minutes – or by power-OFF with the volume knob (10) the sleep function will be de-activated.
- After 30 minutes, the unit will remain at the low volume for 10 more minutes. If there is no user action, it will then switch off completely to protect the battery. To restart the unit, switch it off with the volume control and then switch it on again.
Bluetooth® playback
- Activate the Bluetooth® (BT) function of your Bluetooth audio source (“ON“).
- Power-ON the MusicBox with the volume knob (10). Press on the Zzz/Bluetooth® button (4, blue) for more than 4 seconds, until the MusicBox shows a blue flashing LED to confirm the activation of its BT function.
- The MusicBox‘s BT now tries first to re-connect to the previous BT source. If your source was previously connected to the MusicBox by BT, the BT connection will be re-established instantly again.
- If there is no previous BT source available, the MusicBox continues quick blue flashing which means search for a new BT source. New BT sources can be connected just within the first 2 minutes in this mode!
- Now start the BT search function of your BT source device. After a moment, “KidzAudio MusicBox“ will appear in the BT listing of your BT source device. Select “KidzAudio MusicBox“ for connection (pairing) now.
- Once the pairing has proceeded, the MusicBox will confirm the BT connection by static blue indication. The Bluetooth connection is now protected against foreign BT sources!
- In case of interruption of a BT connection through interference or too far distance, the playback is muted and the blue indication will flash quickly again. Once the BT source can be received again, the BT playback will continue.
- To deactivate the BT function, select any other playback category and playback a content from USB storage or power-OFF the device by turning the volume knob fully counterclockwise.
Headphones playback
- Once MusicBox recognizes the plug in the headphones socket (12) the built-in speaker will be deactivated.
- Since MusicBox is a mono device, also the headphone playback is in mono. You can of course use conventional stereo headphones with a 3.5mm stereo jack connection.
- To finish the headphone playback, pull the jack plug out of the socket (12), the built-in speaker will then be re-activated.
