This product is certified for indoor use only.

  • Do not use the product if wet.
  • Do not use the product if damaged.
  • Do not repair, replace parts or modify the product in anyway
  • Do not connect with voltages > 30 V AC rms, or 60 V DC.
  • Batteries contain hazardous chemicals that can cause burns. If exposure to chemicals occurs, clean with water and seek medical attention.
  • The battery cover must be screwed into place before operating the product.
  • Replace the batteries when the low battery indicator is lit to prevent incorrect measurements.
  • Do not disassemble or crush battery cells and battery packs.
  • Do not put batteries near heat or fire.
  • Do not put Product under the direct sunlight.

Features

The tone generator allows the identification and tracing of wires and cables.
RJ45 connector
The RJ45 connects to:

  • Line 1 (L1) for voltage indication, tone generation, continuity test and Talk Set power.

  • Line 2 (L2) for voltage indication.
The RJ45 adapter cable connections are:

  • Line 1 pins 4 and 5. With the RJ45 – RJ11 cable, the RJ11 uses pins 3 and 4. The crocodile clip cable also connects to these pins.

  • Line 2 pins 3 and 6. With the RJ45 – RJ11 cable, the RJ11 uses pins 2 and 5.

Operation

  1. Always connect to a cable with the Tone Generator, Continuity and Talk Set power turned off.
  2. Connect directly to the RJ45 socket or use the RJ45 to RJ11 cable to connect to terminated cables or the Crocodile clip cable for unterminated wires.
  3. Check that the L1 and L2 LEDs are both off to confirm that no voltage is present on the cable or wires before turning on any function.TREND NETWORKS R180000 Tone Generator - fig 1

Warning
Do not connect to live AC circuits. This is a shock hazard and could damage the Tone Generator. Connect to unknown circuits with the power off. voltage is detected when either/ both LEDs are lit. The Continuity and Talk Set status modes must NOT be used with voltage present. Do not connect to active AC circuit exceeding 24V when using the tone mode.
Tone Generation

  1. Press the Tone Pattern selection button to turn on the Tone Generator and select tone pattern (P1) ->(P2) ->Off. (RJ45 Tone output pin 4&5; 1&3)
  2. When the Tone Generator is operating, both the L1 Green and Red LEDs will be lit due to the voltage applied to the line.

Continuity

  1. Short the wires at the far end of the circuit to be measured. The L1 LEDs must not be lit before starting continuity check.
  2. Press the Test Mode button to turn on Continuity measurement. The Continuity LED will flash and L1 NORM LED lit. The sounder will beep depending on the resistance of the circuit. The green L1 LED brightness will vary depending on resistance measured.

Resistance Continuity LED
Audio beep L1 Green LED (NRM)| ≤ 200Ω| 200Ω-2KΩ| 2KΩ-10KΩ| > 10KΩ
---|---|---|---|---
Solid lit| 50:50 flash| 20:50 flash| 1s flash
ON| Short beep| Very short beep| OFF
OFF| OFF| Brightness varies| Bright glow

3. Press the Test Mode button twice to turn off the Continuity measurement.
4. To test Continuity during Toning, press the Test Mode button to turn on Continuity measurement. The Tone pattern will now have 2 short audible gaps where the continuity is measured. If a short is measured (≤ 200 Ω), the pattern will change. Press the Test Mode or Tone Pattern button to turn off.

Talk Set Power Supply

  1. Connect the Tone Generator in series with the two Talk Sets: See Fig 2
    • Connect the black crocodile clip to the red lead of the local Talk set.
    • Connect the red crocodile clip to one wire of the pair you want to talk over.
    • Connect the black Talk set lead to the other wire of the pair.
    • At the far end connect the Talk Set to the two wires as Fig 2.

  2. Press the Test Mode button twice to turn on Talk Set power. The L1 LED will be lit to indicate the voltage on the line.

  3. Place both test sets into “off hook” or TALK position to establish communication.

  4. Press the Test Mode button again to turn off the Talk Set power.

Line Voltage Polarity Check

  1. Connect black lead to Tip/positive/white striped conductor and the red lead to Ring/negative/solid coloured conductor.
  2. If the Polarity indicator LED is green (NRM- normal), the polarity is correct, if the Polarity indicator LED is red (REV – reverse), the polarity is reversed.
  3. If the Polarity indicator LED is off, there is no DC voltage on the line.

Telephone Line Status Check

  1. Connect the red lead to Ring/Negative/solid coloured conductor and connect the black lead to Tip/Positive /White striped conductor. If NRM or REV LED is bright the line is on the hook.
  2. If NRM or REV LED is dim the line is off the hook.
  3. If both NRM and REV LEDs are flashing ringing voltage is present.
  4. If both NRM and REV LEDs are glowing AC voltage is present.

Battery Status Indicator
The battery status indicator LED will flash when the battery voltage is low to indicate that the battery should be replaced. Do not leave discharged batteries in the Tone Generator.TREND NETWORKS R180000 Tone Generator - fig
