Fabric Confetti Prickly Blooms Wall Hang
You need to have purchased both Prickly Blooms and More Prickly Blooms for this Project
- Prepare applique shapes.
- Cut (9) 12½” x 12½” blocks from starched background fabric. (I used a variety of background fabrics.)
- Cut Pellon 101 interfacing to fit the 12½” x 12½” blocks and fuse to the wrong side of the fabric following manufacturer’s instructions. This layer of interfacing will add extra support to the fabric so that the embroidery stitching does not pucker or distort the fabric.
- Using a water-soluble pen, mark the vertical center of each of your blocks. The horizontal line that you will mark will differ with each block. (If you use the block on the next page as a guide, the horizontal line will be 51/4” from the bottom of the 12½” x 12½” block.)
- Once you have prepared your blocks, proceed to the stitch-out instructions for each of the cacti. You will be lining up the cross-hairs in step one of each of the hoopings with the lines that you have drawn in Step 4 of these instructions.

When this block is trimmed to 11½” x 11½” after embroidery, trim so that there is one inch between the edge that you trim and the bottom of the pot base.
When you have finished stitching out your cactus designs, trim the blocks down to 11½” x11½”.
NOTE: You will leave 1” at the bottom of each of the cactus.
Sashing and Borders
- For the sashing and borders, you will need 1/2 yard of fabric.
- Cut (4) 1½” x WOF (Width of Fabric) strips from starched sashing fabric.
- Using two of the strips, sub cut (6) 1½” x 11½” strips.
- Cut the remaining (3) WOF strips down to 1½” x 35½” strips.
- Lay out the cactus blocks using the diagram below. They can be switched around a little bit, but I chose this layout so that the shorter and taller cacti were placed evenly.
- Stitch the 1½” x 11½” strips to the cactus blocks in each row using a 1/4” seam and using the diagram below as a guide. Press seams toward sashing.
- Stitch the 1½” x 35½” strips to cactus block rows with a 1/4” seam. Again, press seams toward sashing.
Borders
- Cut (4) 2½” x WOF (Width of Fabric) strips from starched border fabric.
- Cut (2) of these WOF strips down to 2½” x 35½” strips and cut (2) of these WOF strips down to 2½” x 39½” strips for the borders.
- Stitch the two 2½” x 35½” strips to the sides of the cactus wall hanging with a 1/4” seam. Press seams toward border.
- Stitch the two 2½” x 39½” strips to the top and the bottom edges of the cactus wall hanging with a 1/4” seam.
Again, press seams toward border.
FINISHING IT UP!
- You will need 11/4 yards of fabric for the backing.
- You will need between 1/4 and 3/8 yard for binding. (It depends how you make your binding.)
- Sandwich quilt top,
