Techniques and Process

This collage process uses raw edge applique and satin/zigzag
stitching to secure the edges of randomly cut applique pieces. No
measuring or rulers are required for creating collage shapes. The
goal is to create a strong, pleasing piece of art by focusing on
shape, color, repetition, line, and placement to achieve a good
composition.

Optional Accent Color

If you want to include an accent color in the binding, prepare
four strips the length of your finished sides that are 7/8 wide.
These can be a solid fabric in a shade of your main color or a
subtle print. Press them in half the length of the strips, wrong
sides together. They are basted to the quilt before the binding is
attached.

Heidi’s philosophy of creating art quilts is to keep the process as easy as possible while creating a detailed and interesting artwork. She chooses uncomplicated techniques that help you keep moving through the process to achieve a successful quilt. This collage process uses raw edge applique and satin/zigag stitching to secure the edges of randomly cut applique pieces. No measuring or rulers required for creating collage shapes! The goal is
to create a strong, pleasing piece of art, but not to make it too complicated. You will learn how to make decisions on shape, color, repetition, line and placement in order to make a good composition.
Students will choose either a monochromatic collage or a collage using ice dyed fabrics. The pieces can be from 12″ x 12″ up to 18″ x 20″–no larger please. If you feel challenged choose a smaller size as it is easier to design. In the class we will discuss both styles and their unique aspects for design. The kit includes some dyed fabric scraps for your use in class as we play with collage design. Students should know how to set up and use their machines for free motion quilting as there will not be time for the instructor to help with this in the class. These topics will be covered/discussed over the two day workshop:
· Abstract Collage Design · Combining Free Motion Quilting and Hand Embroidery · Embellishing beading, couching, dangling, stamping, etc. · Finishing · Design Options for Future Projects
For the Monochromatic collage select one color from the color wheel and create an art quilt in a collage style using mostly that one color. To create interest add shots of other color and texture with fabric, simple hand embroidery stitches and/or beading. For the Ice Dye collage you can use your own or buy some of my ice dyed fabrics that will be available at the class. It is easiest to start with a fairly “quiet” background rather than something dramatic, and then spark it up with the collaged pieces and stitching to add color, movement and texture. There may be enough scraps provided in the kit to use for your collage if you make it small, or save them for a future project.
Examples of Monochromatic Abstract Collage Quilts:
These are from a series of 12 Color Wheel quilts I created that are all 12″ x 12″–a fun and easy size to work with. See last page for more quilt examples.

1 – piece of cotton fabric for the background/base in the color you have chosen from the color wheel or a solid/near solid fabric for the ice dye project. This is for the FRONT of the quilt and you will build your collage on it. A subtle print will work but stay away from bold graphic prints. It will be covered by the collaged pieces so don’t use your favorite pictorial fabric. For the ice dye project your background can be a dyed or commercial fabric but keep it subtle. Almost anything can be made interesting through Heidi’s design process.
1 piece of cotton fabric for backing 1 piece of batting – low loft cotton or cotton-blend (like Warm & Natural) 1 piece of fabric the size of your finished quilt for a Facing (something that doesn’t clash with top), or Binding fabric to accommodate your finished quilt size. Have whichever one you choose cut and ready to attach at class.
1 Quilt Sandwich (top, batting, backing) For free motion play in class. Should be approximately 14″ square and pinned. You can use safety pins or Heidi uses long straight pins. You can use muslin or another light colored quilting weight cotton fabric. It is helpful to press both sides smooth over the batting which creates some static so the fabric clings, then pin it carefully so there are no puckers.
Small pieces of fabric for the collage. Scraps should be large enough to cut 3 shapes (circles, squares, etc) with some slightly longer than your quilt will be to use for strips or wavy lines. For a monochromatic quilt choose varying shades of the color you have decided on and vary the values (light/medium/dark). They should vary in the scale of their print–including some solid or near-solids, and some can have bits of other colors in them–maybe the compliment which is directly across from it on the color wheel. For the ice dye collage choose some contrasting and/or complimentary ice dyed fabrics so you have options to play with. Be sure to vary the values. You may not use all of the fabrics you bring but you want to have choices. (Heidi will have ice dyed fabrics available for purchase.) An entire shop of fabric is at your fingertips so if you don’t have what you need–go shopping! NOTE: You can incorporate commercial prints or linen in your piece as well, but try to remember to keep it simple. No upholstery fabric, velvet, wool, etc for this particular class.
Sewing Machine bobbins, extra machine needle, feet, etc. Be sure you have what you need to do free motion quilting–including knowledge of how to do it. Be sure your machine is in good working order. Heidi uses a neutral color bobbin thread and keeps the same one for the entire quilt. Gray, taupe/beige, black–depending on if you have a dark or light quilt.
Thread For free motion quilting and satin/zigzag stitching. Variegated threads work great and a variety of threads helps create interest and makes it fun! Have some in shades of the colorway you have chosen and some that contrast/compliment it. Heidi uses many threads including cotton, polytrilobal, rayon and embroidery threads. Stay away from metallics for this class unless you are well-versed in using them–they can be tricky and we’re not doing tricky in this class! Quilt Gallery has lots!

Sewing Notions: Scissors, seam ripper, thimble, pincushion, pins, etc.

Supply List PAGE 2

Small cutting mat, plastic ruler, rotary cutter

Embroidery floss and/or Pearl Cotton (sz 8) in various colors Some in shades of your colorway and some complimentary colors for accent. Again, variegated threads work great. These are also available in the shop.

Beads, Charms, Ephemera Embellishments that blend and/or contrast with your fabrics. If you have beads choose some options to bring. If you don’t have beads just come and see what I have that might work for you. Some will be available for the taking (and others I will consider parting with for a price!) It can be tricky if not working from your own bead stash, but Heidi will give you ideas and suggestions for your piece and tips for building your own stash that will compliment your style.

Glue stick regular inexpensive school glue is fine.

Optional: If you want to include an accent color in the binding as a flange or flat piping (see sample quilts/pics), bring four strips the length of your finished sides that are 7/8″ wide. These can be a solid fabric in a shade of your main color or a subtle print. Press them in half the length of the strips, wrong sides together. They are basted to the quilt before the binding is attached.
