ABOUT SEI CERTIFICATION
SEI is Safety Equipment Institute, a not-for-profit organization that provides certification services for protective equipment. For equestrian helmets, SEI has selected ASTM standard F1163 as the most appropriate standard for evaluating performance of the helmets. The current version of this standard includes (1) requirements for coverage of the head, (2) performance under impact with steel anvils, (3) ability of the retention system to withstand a strong jerking load, (4) ability of the retention system to retain the helmet in position on the wearer’s head, and (5) information that must be provided by the manufacturer to the consumer. Because of the rigorous procedures for obtaining SEI certification, the consumer can be sure that any product bearing the SEI mark is manufactured to stringent requirements. Random samples of the product are tested periodically by the SEI-contracted lab, so the manufacturer must be certain that every single product will satisfy all testing requirements. Products certified by SEI can be depended on for consistency, quality, and measurable performance. In the case of equestrian helmets, every helmet bearing the SEI mark must be capable of satisfying the impact and retention requirements of the ASTM standard, which has been proven to reduce the risk of head injuries in equestrian activities. More information about certifications and testing can be found at: www.troxelhelmets.com
OVERVIEW
The Troxel helmet you have purchased is one of the lightest, best-ventilated and most comfortable helmets available. It is designed to reduce the harmful effects of an impact to the covered part of the head. Troxel equestrian helmets covered in this Owner’s Manual meet ASTM F1163 specifications. Additional standards may apply. Please refer to standards labeling on the inside of the helmet. No helmet can prevent all types of head injuries. By fully reading this manual and acquainting yourself with proper helmet fit, care, and features, you may reduce the chance of injury during an impact. These instructions are intended for adults. Please contact Troxel Customer Service if you have any questions regarding these instructions. A helmet must be correctly worn and maintained to provide protection. Carefully read and follow these instructions. Incorrect use or maintenance of your helmet could lead to serious injury or death
WARNING
- This helmet is designed for equestrian use only.
- Helmets are not designed to prevent concussions and cannot protect a user from all impacts. ASTM/SEI certified helmets are not certified nor tested to protect users against the crushing forces that may be sustained by a horse or other large animal stepping onto the helmet or rolling onto the helmet of its user. All types of riding involve crush accident risk. If you are undertaking a form or riding, such as eventing or jumping, where there can be a high likelihood of a crush event, it is important that you realize that this helmet is not designed, nor will it protect you against, such significant crush events.
- Do not leave children unattended using this product, a hazard of strangulation exists. The helmet may become hung up on playground equipment, trees or other fixed objects, resulting in hanging.
- This helmet is designed for one impact only, and is not designed for multiple impacts. One impact can cause unseen damage to the helmet and affect the helmet’s protective capabilities. Return for replacement after any impact or accident, or destroy helmet and replace.
- Fasten all retention buckles securely, and make sure retention is snug.
- Follow proper head circumference recommendations. Use fit instructions in this Owner’s Manual to achieve proper fit. If a proper fit cannot be achieved, do not wear a helmet, and find an alternative helmet that fits properly before riding
- Do not modify the helmet or its attachments, nor use a Troxel helmet that has been modified in any manner. All modifications (other than applying Troxel brand accessories) void Troxel’s warranty. Do not paint, sticker, apply non- Troxel branded accessories including hat brims, crystals, cameras or any other objects to, or otherwise modify a helmet as all of these modifications can damage the helmet and/or reduce its protective capabilities.
- Use only mild soap, water and non-abrasive cloth to clean shell, pads, and retention system. Use of organic chemicals and cleaning solvents can cause unseen damage to the helmet.
- For use by persons who can comfortably support the helmet weight. When used for toddlers, consult your doctor for a safety evaluation.
- This helmet provides no protection to parts of the body it does not cover directly.
- Helmets should not be exposed to nor stored near volatile chemicals such as acids, solvents, pool chemicals, paints, paint thinners, fertilizers, insect repellant, pesticides and herbicides. (Storing near any of these solvents can destroy the strapping and/or protective abilities of the helmet.)
- Due to evolving helmet standards, technologies, and the potential for unseen material deterioration, it is recommended that you replace your helmet every five years from date of purchase.
- Never purchase, loan or borrow a used helmet as the condition of the helmet, including its involvement in a prior impact, is unknown.
- Check the helmet fit and adjustment before every ride.
- Do not expose helmet to conditions of unusually high heat, such as the trunk or passenger compartment of your car on a hot day. The effects of high temperatures (above 130ºF) may damage the impact-absorbing materials of your helmet. The shell may also distort at these high temperatures. If the outer shell of your helmet distorts, the impact absorbing liner may also be damaged, and the helmet should be discarded. Troxel’s warranty does not cover the helmet melting under extreme heat.
PROPER FIT FOR YOUR HELMET
The importance of a properly fitting helmet cannot be overemphasized. To be effective, the helmet must fit firmly but comfortably. A helmet that is too loose may slip, possibly reducing its protective capabilities, and one that is too tight may cause discomfort.
STEP 1
Try on your helmet, utilizing the smallest model size that fits snug on your head, but that is comfortable.
STEP 2
For Troxel helmets with built in FlipFold™ pads: If you feel gaps between your head and the side(s) of the helmet, remove the helmet and engage the Patented* FlipFold™ pads identified on the headliner by folding the pads under to thicken the side padding on the inside of the helmet. When adjusted properly, the helmet should feel snug and sit level on your head, with the front edge just above your eyebrows (see illustration).
STEP 3
Adjust Comfort System: Start with the DialFit™ or SureFit™ system (depending on model) at loosened position. Do not crank the DialFit™ all the way out. Tighten comfort system until desired comfort is achieved. Keep the DialFit™ low and outside of the helmet, see illustration below. Avoid adjusting the comfort system to its extremes. The DialFit™ and SureFit™ comfort systems are not designed to keep the helmet on the head (retention straps do this) and they are not part of ASTM testing. The comfort systems can break away during an impact.
STEP 4
Adjust Retention System: After adjusting the inner fit pads and comfort system, complete the retention system adjustment. The retention system works by using a webbing and buckle system to properly secure the helmet in place during falls. Position the slide glide to form a “V” shape under and slightly in front of the ears by sliding the glide up or down and by adjusting the webbing (see illustration).
STEP 5
Adjust Buckle Position: Adjust position of buckle so that when helmet is buckled, only 1–2 fingers fit between retention strap and chin. Adjust buckle position by pulling the excess webbing through the prong part of the buckle. Slide one rubber O-ring all the way to the buckle (see illustration) and, finally, insert the excess webbing into the second rubber O-ring. Excess material can be cut away if desired, but allow 1/2”-1” so the webbing does not slip through the buckle.
STEP 6
Check for proper fit and ensure buckle is securely fastened each time you wear your helmet. With the helmet properly adjusted, tension should be firm and evenly distributed among all the straps. The helmet should not easily roll forward or backward and it should not be removable without unbuckling the retention system. Troxel stresses the importance of snugly adjusting and buckling the retention system for every ride. The retention system is extremely strong and essential to the protective function of your helmet.
SureFit™
Both Pro and Elite systems adjust by sliding the glide on either side to your preferred level of tension.
DialFit™
Turn the dial clockwise. Do not crank the DialFit™ all the way out.
