Step by step instructions for taking your impressions

Important: Please read these instructions carefully and watch the short video of how to do your impressions and be sure you understand the process before mixing the putty.

Getting StartedGet familiar with your Impression Kit

To start your impressions, clear off a table and lay out the contents of your impression kit to help familiarise yourself with the purpose of each item inside the box. Pick a spot with lots of space and light, so you can take your impressions here later. The whole process will take about 20 minutes, and it’s super easy. We’ll walk you through it to help make this experience as smooth and simple as possible for you.

Inside your kit, you will find

2 blue putties and 2 white putties
Pull each of the putty cups out of the box, but do not mix them yet! keep refrigerated 24 hours before use.

3 x sets impression trays S, M, and Large size.
Once you start your impressions, you will mix the putty and put it in each tray, so we can get accurate impressions of your teeth. Find the right size tray before you start.

1 bag, 1 return shipping label, and a re-sealing label
You will send back your completed impressions in the impression kit box. Simply place the completed impressions in the bag included use the supplied label to seal the box and send it back to us.

You will also need a towel and

Mobile phone with a timer
You will use this to time yourself mixing the putty and taking the impressions in your mouth. This is critical to getting the impressions done accurately.

Toothbrush with toothpaste and floss
For best accuracy, be sure to floss and brush your teeth before taking your impressions.

Let’s get started on your impressions!
Here’s a photo of a good impression. Please read this leaflet and watch the impression how-to video before you start. Only start when you are sure of what you are doing as failed impressions can delay getting your treatment plan and aligners.

Please find the right size trays by trying them first. The right tray is the one where your teeth don’t touch the side. You are looking to get the perfect impression as the picture above.

The process for taking good impressions
Keep the putty in the fridge for at least 24 hours before for best results. You’ will take and return 2 impressions of your teeth – 1 of the top and 1 of the bottom. Please return all completed impressions.

  • The first step – you will mix and mold the putty.
  • Next step – you will place the impression trays with putty in your mouth and take an impression.

It’s that easy! Repeat each step until both impressions are done.

Step 1. Mix and mould the putty (1 min 45 Seconds)

Important: Choose The Right Size Tray before you start.

The right size tray should be the one where your teeth aren’t touching the sides. Try before you do the next steps.

You have 90 seconds to complete the next 3 steps, so get your timer ready. After the 105 seconds, the putty will start to harden and make it hard to get a good impression – once you start mixing the putty, you will want to work quickly.

COMPLETE EACH STEP WITHIN

Mix by folding until putty is 1 solid colour.

  • Take 1 blue putty and 1 white putty. Keep folding it until it’s soft and thoroughly mixed. If you see streaks, keep folding.

Roll the putty into a log.

  • Roll the blended putty between your hands to create a log that is about 10cm long.

Place the putty into the tray.

  • Once the putty is rolled, gently lay it into the impression tray, so it fills the entire tray – from end to end. Don’t apply pressure to push the putty in – just gently lay the putty into the tray.

Step 2. Take your impressions (3 minutes)

Once you are 100% happy, read this booklet and have watched the video with how to do your impressions right, you are good to proceed!

Tip: While you are taking your impressions and when you take the impression trays out of your mouth, you might drool, so make sure you have a towel handy.

Start with the bottom impressions.

  • The putty takes 3 minutes to harden, once it’s in your mouth. Start with your bottom impression as it’s a bit easier.
  • Use your pointer and middle fingers to evenly press the tray straight down over your teeth, until your molars gently touch the bottom of the tray. Pull your lips over the impression tray and hold it in place for 3 minutes. Make sure you use your timer, so you know exactly when to pull the tray out. Then use the tray handle to gently remove the hardened impression.
  • After taking your impression, check it against the good impression example.

Finish with the top impressions.

  • After rolling the putty for the upper impression, use even pressure with your thumbs on both sides of the tray and press straight up until your teeth gently touch the bottom of the tray. Pull your lips over the impression tray and hold it in place for 3 minutes. Similar to your lower impressions, make sure you set a timer, so you know exactly when to remove the impression tray from your mouth.

Have you done both impressions?
Great! Please make sure to send them all back, even if you think you may have messed something up. We want to review them and give you feedback, in case we need more.

Important: Please fill in your details on the inside lid of the impression box as this will tell our lab who’s impressions they are scanning and creating treatment for.

Step 3. Send back your impressions

Post your impressions

  • Keep the impressions you took in their trays, put them into the clear bag and put them back in the box your kit came in. Seal the box with the sticky label.
  • The free return label is already in your box, with the address of our lab.
  • The return shipping is free – you can drop your re-sealed box off at a DPD drop off point. Scan the QR code to go to the DPD.co.uk parcel shop finder.
