MOOSEKNUCKLE OFFROAD Raw Dog Custom Coating

CUSTOM COATING PREP

ATTENTION! THE “RAW DOG” MOOSE KNUCKLE SHACKLE WILL RUST IF YOU DO NOT POWDER COAT, PRIME OR PAINT.
LEAVING IT UNCOATED IS NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY.
Please follow these IMPORTANT steps to prepare your MOOSE KNUCKLE OFFROAD SHACKLE for powder coating or paint. Failure to do so could result in peeling, rust or corrosion, which can lead to failure of product voiding warranty.

  1. DISASSEMBLE – Remove the pin from the shackle before powder coating, priming or painting. Prep, powder coat, prime or paint the pin and body separately or the parts will bond together and you will not be able to remove the pin from the shackle. Please note: Already coated pins do not need powder coating.
  2. CLEAN – Remove all dirt, oil, grease, and grime from the part. A general decreaser can be used. Denatured alcohol is highly recommended. Your goal with this cleaning step should be that you could place it on your best white shirt when done without it leaving a stain.
  3. DO NOT SAND BLAST! – This will damage the threads on both the pin or body so they do not function properly. If there is light rust or corrosion on your shackle use a rust or corrosion remover before proceeding to the next step.
  4. OUT GASING – Steel is a porous metal that can harbor oil and other contaminants which can degrade the bonding of your powder coat, primer or paint coating. Heat both the pin and body to 440F for a minimum of 30 minutes to drive out all oils and contaminants from the part.
  5. CLEAN AGAIN – Once cooled to room temperature after degassing, use denatured alcohol once again to clean your shackle pin and body. Allow to dry completely before powder coating, priming or painting.
  6. THREADS – A thin coating technique should be used on the threads of the pin and body so that the threads will still function properly after coating is complete. Coating the threads too thick may make it difficult or impossible to reassemble the shackle.
Okay! You are ready to powder coat. Just one more thing … We highly recommend that you take your Moose Knuckle Offroad “Raw Dog” Shackle to a professional powder coat or paint facility to ensure that it is coated properly.
