CONTROL ARMS – NOTES
1994-2002 Trucks:
Remove and install new arms, no obstacles exist.
2003-2012 Diesel Trucks:
You must lower, then slide the exhaust (downpipe) rearward to gain access to
the upper frame side bolt of the 3rd/4th gen diesel trucks. Ensure to check
for sensors in the exhaust on the 07.5 +. There should be sensors and 2 tubes
that go into the exhaust.
Loosen the downpipe clamp and remove whatever exhaust hangers are necessary to
gain access to the upper control arm bolt.
2003-2012 Hemi Trucks:
It is usually required to disconnect the exhaust from the manifold to get to
the upper frame side control arm bolts.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
Note: Prior to installation, carefully inspect the vehicles steering and
drive train components. Be sure to check ball joints, tie rod ends, pan-rod
bar, and control armbushings. Everything must be tight and in good working
condition.
We recommend installation be done by a trained professional.
Read instructions carefully before attempting installation.
Secure and properly block vehicle prior to installation.
Re-torque all nuts and bolts after 500 miles to ensure tightness.
*Only do one side at a time!
-
Spray all control arm bolts with penetrating lubricant and let it soak overnight prior to attempting installation.
-
Once penetrating lubricant has had time to free the hardware, jack the vehicle upward and support the vehicle weight with jack stands placed behind the lower control arm mount. Ensure the vehicle is fully dropped and there is no weight on the front axle.
-
Remove Wheel and Tire from the Driver’s Side.
-
Loosen all 4 control arm bolts.
-
Place small jack stand under axle for support before removing control arms.
-
Remove lower control arm. If bolts will not loosen and are seized (Normally only in extreme climate situations), a reciprocating saw may be necessary to cut the bolts from the control arms. Use ONLY factory replacement hardware when reinstalling.
-
Remover Upper control arm noting the insertion directions of the factory bolts as the hardware is only intended to work when installed in the proper orientation.
-
Install the control arms in the reverse order: upper first, then lower.
NOTE: Control arms are side and Upper/Lower Specific. Install the arms ensuring they’re offset to the inside of the vehicle and the short arms are installed as uppers; long arms as lowers. Each arm is marked with a sticker designating its proper installation location. After installation, Carli sticker should be facing outward and should be closer to the frame than the axle. -
Again, ensure the bolt orientation is proper and all bolts are installed in the same direction they were removed. Leave all bolts loose until completely finished
-
Set the lower control arm eccentric bolt so the indicator is pointing to the neutral (12 o’ clock) position and tighten. This is indicated by the picture displaying the penetrating lubricant soak.
-
Final Torquing:
a. 1998.5-13 with 14mm uppers and 16mm lowers: Uppers should be torqued to 120lb/ft. and the lowers to 175lb/ft.
b. 1994-98 with 12mm uppers and 14mm lowers: Uppers should be torqued to 90lb/ft. and the lowers to 120lb/ft. -
Passenger side: Repeat Driver’s side process then reinstall exhaust.
-
Have the vehicle’s caster realigned to ensure proper cam-bolt positioning.
