Preparation and suitability test

ter Hürne luxury vinyl tiles consist of thermoplastic materials that are subject to temperature-related dimensional changes. Depending on the installation situation and use,  gaps may form or the surfaces may deform due to thermal changes. As such, a preliminary assessment should be made on whether the floor is installed as a floating  installation or fully glued. For special use, such as in special commercial applications or spatial situations with a high point load and use on underfloor heating systems, we  recommend glue down installation to prevent or limit possible gaps and deformations.

  1. Thoroughly read these installation instructions before installation.

  2. Ensure that all floorboards in an installation area come from the same batch to prevent any possible batch-related colour nuances.
This must also be considered for any  reorders. You can find the batch number on the head label of every carton.

  3. To acclimatise the materials, store the packs horizontally and unopened at 20°C and 40-60% air humidity in the middle of the room in question for 48 hours and not in  front of the window.

  4. Use original ter Hürne accessories for installation.

  5. For subfloors without underfloor heating: Before installation, a professional installer must perform and log a moisture test (CM measurement). Residual moisture on a  calcium sulphate floor screed may not exceed 0.5% CM, and 2.0% CM for cement screed.

  6. For subfloors with underfloor heating: Before installation, a professional installer must perform and log a moisture test (CM measurement). Residual moisture on a  calcium sulphate floor screed may not exceed 0.3% CM, and 1.8% CM for cement screed.

  7. The subfloor must be dry, even, clean and stable.
Unevenness in the subfloor that is greater than 2 mm per meter must be levelled using a levelling compound. Failure to comply can lead to an unsatisfactory overall appearance, gapping, and lipping.

  8. Installation on existing floor coverings: Installation on smooth tiles is permissible, if all tiles are of the same height and the width/height of the joints is no more than 3mm. If joints are bigger than this we recommend levelling of the tiled floor.
Installation on textile subfloors (e.g. carpets) and on loosely installed old surfaces is prohibited. Please remove these surfaces before installation and prepare the subfloor  accordingly. Please consult your dealer for any subfloors not listed here.

  9. The floorboards may neither be screwed nor nailed (fixed).

  10. The substructure must be able to take a load; there must be no bounce, particularly in a joist structure with subfloor panels.

  11. Before and during installation, the floor elements must be thoroughly inspected for material defects.
Floorboards with visible defects or damage must not be installed. No claims can be accepted once goods have been installed.

  12. This floor is not suitable for installation in showers, public washrooms, and saunas.

  13. Tools required include a cutter, tapping block and hammer (or use a plastic hammer without the tapping block).

  14. The ideal temperature for installation is +20°C. The temperature should not fall below +18°C nor exceed +28°C during installation. To prevent material changes/ damage, ensure adequate shade when installing in areas with strong direct sunlight.

  15. The floor is suitable for conservatories which are fully air-conditioned and equipped with shade systems. Similiar climatic conditions (air humidity, temperature) as  in the rest of the living area should always be maintained, or as described in the paragraph on care and use.
    Glue-down installation
The luxury vinyl tiles can be glued down, if necessary; in some situations (e.g. damp rooms), glue-down installation of luxury vinyl tiles is absolutely imperative. For glue-down  installation, only use the recommended adhesive from ter Hürne‘s accessory range and follow all the adhesive manufacturer‘s general instructions.
You can find detailed installation instructions for glued own installation here: www.terhuerne.com

  16. Always install the planks row by row. Ensure that you install the covering towards the incoming light (head end of the plank facing the window). If there are several windows, then please align towards the largest one. Begin installing the planks from left to right. The groove side should face the wall. It must be trimmed off.

  17. For a homogeneous surface image, please use planks from different boxes. Ensure that the design structure is different for planks that lie adjacent to each other.

  18. First row of planks: Keep a distance of 10 mm from all walls and fixed components.

  19. Place the head end level with the first plank and tap down using a tapping block, so it engages audibly.

  20. 20a) Then place the long side of the plank to be installed at an angle of approx. 30° in the groove side of the installed plank. Angle it into the profile and push the plank  carefully angled onto the head end of the previous plank. Then tap lightly downwards using a tapping block so it engages.
20b) For large formats, such as the 1200 x 600 mm XL tile, carefully slide the plank/tile to the edge of the element already installed to avoid damage/compression in the  corner area. Pay attention to the edges. For large formats we recommend that this step is carried out by two people.

  21. At the end of one row: Turn the plank to be cut by 180° and draw the cutting marks. The cut parts of a plank must be at least 30 cm long for installation.

  22. We recommend using a tapping block for optimum 2-sided connection of the planks. Place it in different parts of the long side of the planks to be installed and carefully  tap with a hammer against the tapping block until a closed gap pattern is formed.

  23. Header joints on adjoining rows must be at least 30 cms apart from each other.

  24. Last row of planks: Turn the plank to be cut by 180° and draw the cutting marks.

  25. Radiators: Add 30 mm to the pipe‘s diameter and draw the cutting marks. Drill it and separate the planks in the middle of the drill holes. Adhere the installed planks with  some glue on the cut section.

  26. Doors: Turn a plank over to mark the cutting line. Adapt the door frames accordingly.

  27. Generally, all transition gaps and structural expansion gaps must be adopted. An expansion gap must be installed if the total area is greater than 10 x 15 meters and in door areas and crossover points between rooms.

  28. Cover the expansion gap with the appropriate profile (ter Hürne accessories).

  29. Install the skirting clips spaced approx. 40-50 cm  apart (ter Hürne accessories).
When installing skirtings, transition and finishing profiles or door frames, ensure that the skirtings, profiles, door frames or similar elements are never fixed or wedged to the floor.

  30. Angle the entire row of planks by 30°. Then loosen the row of planks from the installed area.

  31. Separate the planks from each other by pushing the head ends evenly in opposite directions.

Care and use

  1. Do notfix the floor using heavy objects such as waterbeds, kitchen units, chimneys, aquariums, etc.

  2. Install felt gliders on all movable furniture immediately after installation. Only use soft chair castors (type W). Protect your floor from indentations and scratches by avoiding point loads (e.g. from high heels) or damage (e.g. from pet claws).

  3. Place protective mats in the entrance areas.

  4. Only clean and maintain with a broom, vacuum cleaner or damp, wrung-out cloths/mops.
Please do not use a steam cleaner (212°F, 100°C). Do not allow standing water to form on the floor surface.

  5. Wipe only in the longitudinal direction of the planks.

  6. Only use cleaning and maintenance products from the ter Hürne product line. Follow the instructions on the product label.

  7. Ensure a consistent room temperature of 20°C and 40-60% air humidity.

  8. Make sure that no heat accumulates below covered surfaces (e.g. rugs) when using under floor heating. The area below the carpet may not exceed 27°C.

  9. The surface temperature must not exceed 27°C with underfloor heating. Avoid strong direct sunlight on the floor with adequate shading. 41 & 42) Installation on a  subfloor that is only heated in certain areas is prohibited.
