NOTE: Piston break in guidelines are intended for general instruction only. Always refer to the OEM service manual for critical engine data. When installation is not clear, contact your Wossner dealer or professional engine builder before proceeding

Your Wossner piston kit is precision engineered and manufactured to provide quality performance. As with any performance engine component, the preparation and installation process is critical to the operation of the engine, as well as the break-in procedure

This document is a guideline to help walk you through the process of engine break in, and the initial steps that allow the piston components to properly adjust to the conditions that allow these components to operate properly.

  • “Break-in” is the process of easing the piston and ring assembly in a fresh engine build.
  • Proper break-in ensures the longevity of the piston, ring, cylinder, and related components

NOTE: Top end assembly should be clean and complete – see the Wossner General Piston Installation Guidelines for additional details. Piston to wall clearance and ring gap are critically important to confirm during assembly, and prior to the engine Break-in process

  • All components should be lubricated properly and thoroughly during the assembly step
  • Two cycle engines typically will require a richer oil to fuel ratio during the break in process. For example, if your normal ratio is 40:1, the best practice for break in can be the next step richer such as 32:1
  • Your OEM service manual will provide all of the details needed to properly assemble these components
  • Intake systems should be properly maintained prior to engine start up. This includes a properly prepared and installed air filter
  • Significant changes to the engine set up from previous engine settings are important to account for when breaking in your new top end
  • It is important to carefully monitor the spark plug condition during break-in
  • Take spark plug readings at intervals so that any changes in fuel/air mixture can be adjusted for

Once all assembly and the tuning adjustments/changes are accounted for, these next steps are a guide for general break in:

NOTE: Always work safely, follow common sense practices in the workshop. Avoid putting you or others at risk when running or tuning an engine in a closed work space

  • When possible, place a cooling fan in front of the engine for the initial warm up steps
  • Initial startup, bring the engine up to medium temperature while varying the throttle and engine RPM up and down no higher than half RPM limit. Once the engine is at medium temperature (only a few minutes typically), shut down and allow the engine to fully cool down
  • Repeat this step three times, continue to vary the RPM, allowing the engine temperature to increase each time, and then shut down and cool
  • The next step should allow the engine to achieve full temperature and continue to vary RPM, avoiding full RPM limit
  • Now allow the engine to fully cool and begin the inspection process. Inspect all cylinder and head bolts for torque, make sure all critical components are all properly connecting and operating properly. Inspect all fluid levels, engine oil, coolant, etc., for proper levels
  • Remove the spark plug(s) and inspect the condition and color of the insulator. The insulator should be brown to dark brown in color for break in, which will indicate a proper or rich condition. If the spark plug illustrates a light or grey color, this can be an indication of a lean condition. This will need to be adjusted for before proceeding, or damage can occur to the engine or new components
  • Start the engine and bring up to temperature for initial running under load. As before, continue to vary the RPM and avoid heavy engine loads
  • In the example of a motorcycle, it is best to ride lightly without lugging the engine, continuing to vary the engine RPM and load. Do this for ten to twelve minutes and then stop, allowing the engine to fully cool
  • The next running should simulate the previous example, running for fifteen to eighteen minutes using the same parameter. Stop once again and allow the engine to cool fully
  • Perform a complete check once again; fluids, bolt toque, and all fittings and connections are correct and proper
  • Make one last spark plug check to confirm the state of tune, and make any adjustments

At this point your engine should be considered properly broken in and ready to perform. As always, it is best to monitor the engine for any indications of concern. Perform all required services outlined in your OEM service manual, at the recommended intervals

A performance engine will require a heightened level of maintenance in order to perform as expected. Due to the nature of a performance engines tuning requirements, always consult a qualified engine tuner if you have questions or concerns about the operation of your engine.
