Derby EK-66 Transparent Chest Freezer

Congratulations on purchasing your new freezer!
Please note that this user manual applies to all Derby freezers. The illustrations and equipment will therefore not necessarily correspond completely to your model.

Set-up

Ensure that the freezer is not damaged upon receipt. Transport damage must be reported to your dealer no later than 24 hours after delivery. The freezer should be taken into a dry room at normal room temperature with adequate air circulation. Position the freezer so that there is unrestricted air circulation around the freezer, i.e., so that there is a gap of at least 40 mm on all sides. Never place the freezer in direct sunlight. The freezer should be set up on a level surface and should stand with free circulation around it. If the freezer has been stored or transported cold, do not attempt to start it until the compressor has reached a temperature of at least +5°C. Before the freezer is started, washing is recommended. (See Section 6 Maintenance). If the freezer on the machine sign is marked Class 04, it should not be set up in an ambient temperature higher than +30°C. If the freezer is marked Class 4+, it can handle an ambient temperature of up to +35°C. If it is marked Class 05, it can handle an ambient temperature of up to +40°C. For freezers with sliding glass tops it is very important that these should be facing in the right direction in order for the covering on the underside of the glass to ensure optimum insulation. The top must always be placed so that the text in the corner of the glass can be read and is not reversed.

Electrical connection

The appliance complies with EU requirements for radio noise suppression in accordance with Directive 82/499/EEC. The freezer should be connected to a socket rated at the correct voltage and frequency. This is specified on the manufacturer’s plate on the back of the freezer. The normal voltage for Europe is 230V/50Hz. Voltage variations of +/- 10% are acceptable. Larger variations can damage the freezer and in such cases the factory guarantee will be void. Your local dealer will be able to assist with information on extreme over/under voltage variations. This freezer must be given additional protection in accordance with the applicable power regulations. This also applies even in the case of a replacement of an existing freezer that has not been had additional protection. The purpose of the additional protection is to protect users from dangerous electrical shocks in case of defects. In homes built after 1 April 1975, all sockets in kitchens and any utility rooms will comply with additional protection. In homes built before 1 April 1975 additional protection is in order if a high-sensitivity earth fault circuit breaker has been installed, which protects the socket to which the freezer is connected.

In both situations, the following must be carried out:

  • If the socket has three holes, use a three-pronged plug, and the wire with green/yellow insulation must be connected to the earth terminal.
  • If the socket has only two holes, use only a two-pronged plug. If the user fits this him/herself, the wire with the green/gold insulation must be clipped as closely as possible to the place where the wire enters the plug

In other situations, the user should let an authorized electrician check to see how you best can protect your freezer. The Electricity Council recommends that extra protection is provided with a high sensitivity earth fault circuit breaker.

Operation

The temperature in the freezer is automatically controlled by the adjustable thermostat.

Adjusting the thermostat:

Turn the screw at the bottom of the grille anticlockwise. Push the clasp locks under the grille up. Pull the grille out at the bottom and then down and remove it. The thermostat is located at top left inside the compressor compartment. The thermostat should be rotated clockwise in order to reduce the temperature. See Fig. The thermostat is preset at the factory so that the temperature in the warmest area of the freezer does not exceed -18°C. The location of the freezer, the ambient temperature and the number and length of openings greatly influence the temperature inside the freezer. The freezer must therefore not be placed in direct sunlight or up against heat-generating surfaces. See Fig. If your freezer is fitted with locks, the keys to the freezer should be kept out of the reach of children. If your new freezer is replacing a worn-out freezer of an older type, you should dismantle the locking mechanism on the old freezer.

Storing food

The freezer is only intended as a conservator and is therefore not suited for the freezing of food. In other words, only products that are already frozen should be placed in the freezer. Note that the freezer should only be loaded up to the load line or if such a line is not included up to 100 mm under the lower cover. This is to ensure a product temperature of at least -18C. As the temperature inside the freezer very much depends on the conditions in the location where the cabinet is placed, it is unfortunately not possible to give an exact setting for the thermostat, but it is recommended that you adjust the thermostat to your specific conditions. See Fig.

De-icing the cabinet

Ice formation in the freezer over time is a natural process, but when the ice reaches a thickness of approx. 5-8 mm, the cabinet should be de-iced

  • Place the products from the freezer in a cold place or pack them in insulating material.
  • The freezer should be switched off at the socket.
  • Keep the cover open or remove the sliding covers and place them carefully on the floor.
  • Loosen the ice layer using plastic or wooden implements (never use metal implements).
  • The de-icing process can also be speeded up by using bowls of hot water.
  • Never use pointed or sharp tools.
  • After de-icing, clean the cabinet as described under Section 6. Dry thoroughly after cleaning

Maintenance

Please note the following in connection with the cleaning of the freezer:

  • Place the products from the freezer in a cold place or pack them in insulating material.
  • The freezer should be switched off at the socket.
  • Keep the cover open or remove the sliding covers and place them carefully on the floor.

The freezer can be cleaned with lukewarm water and mild detergent. It should then be washed with clean water.Never use detergents that contain chlorine. Never use pointed or sharp tools. Clean the cover in the same way as the freezer. If the freezer has a condenser with a fan at the bottom of the freezer, dust and dirt may gather on the cooling element. If cleaning is required, the power should be switched off, the metal plate under the condenser removed and the cooling element vacuum-cleaned with a soft brush. Remove the metal plate as follows. Use a crosstip screwdriver to remove the four screws holding the cover plate. Afterwards, remove the metal plate in order to reach the condenser. Be aware that the cooling element consists of sharp components and may be hot to the touch.

Troubleshooting

If you experience any problems with your freezer, please check the following before seeking assistance:

  • Is the plug inserted?
  • Is the socket switched on?
  • Is the fuse in the meter cabinet intact?
  • Has any fault current relay been disconnected?
  • Has there been a complete power failure?

If the freezer is very hot or air circulation is poor, you should provide the necessary circulation. If the condenser is not clean, it should be vacuum- cleaned. If you have checked the above and the freezer is still not working, call a service technician. State the type of fault and appliance, serial number and item no. (stated on the manufacturer’s plate on the back of the freezer).

Disposal

The owner of the freezer is responsible for disposing of the freezer in a responsible way in accordance with the current legislation. When a worn-out freezer is to be disposed of, it should bedisposed of in an environmentally friendly and safe way. Be aware of the rules for disposal. There may be special requirements/regulations with which you must comply. You can obtain information on disposal from:

  • Your dealer
  • The relevant authorities (municipal authority, Danish Environmental Protection Agency or other similar body)
  • WEEE marking

Handling of worn-out electrical and electronic products. (Applies to the European Union and other European countries with separate collection systems.)
