Connect to an AC Outlet

The power jack is located on the bottom of the Sound+Sleep.

  1. Push the power adapter plug at the end of the cable into the jack.
  2. Slip the cord under the rubber foot by separating the two pieces of the foot along the slit.
  3. The machine should sit flat on a table or nightstand if the cord is installed correctly. The slit should easily separate by running your finger down it. If not, you can use a knife to cleanly open the slit.

Next, connect the AC plug into an un-switched wall outlet. The first time you plug it in, it may take up to 30 seconds to perform a self-test. Please note that the ten painted dots around the dial do not light up.

We recommend that you do not use an outlet connected to a switch. Your Sound+Sleep automatically remembers its settings each time it’s turned off using the POWER button, but it may not remember its settings if it loses power.

You may use the Sound+Sleep internationally with any AC line voltage from 100–240 Volts, at 50 or 60Hz, using an AC plug adapter (available at many electronics and travel stores).

USING YOUR SOUND+SLEEP THE FIRST TIME

Turn it on and select a sound

Press the POWER button and the Sound+Sleep will initialize and start playing in about two seconds. The Sound+Sleep may be turned off with the POWER button, or the TIMER button (see Sleep Timer).

The Sound+Sleep will retain the last settings used when you last powered it off using the POWER button. If you power it off by unplugging the Sound+Sleep power adapter from the wall outlet, the settings may not be saved.

Next, use the dial to select a sound category, and then press the RICHNESS button to choose between the three sound environments in that category.

See the included Sound Environments Guide, or the sound listings later in this guide, for a complete list of sound environments.

Use the VOLUME buttons to adjust the volume to your liking.

Not all the sound environments are designed for sleep. Some environments are designed for relaxation, speech privacy, meditation, or studying and reading.

Adaptive Mode

The Sound+Sleep can adapt to noise in your environment. It uses its built-in microphone on the front panel to listen for disruptive noises, and raises the volume and/or adds enhancing sounds to the sound environment to compensate. Press the ADAPTIVE button to turn it on or off. The lamp next to the ADAPTIVE button will indicate when it’s active.

When Adaptive Mode is not active, your Sound+Sleep will maintain a steady volume level.

Adaptive Mode allows the Sound+Sleep to be customized to suit your personal preferences and situation. You might prefer a quiet, steady sound, especially if there is little noise, or steady noise, in your environment. Or, you might need the additional noise masking that Adaptive Mode provides. Experiment to find the setting you like best for different situations.

Note
When setting the volume in Adaptive Mode you are actually setting the maximum volume it can reach when it detects a loud noise. If the sound seems too low when it is quiet in your room, turn the volume up to a higher base level.

MORE USEFUL FEATURES

Sleep Timer

The Sleep Timer can be used to set the Sound+Sleep to play for a number of minutes and then shut off gradually and automatically. The time interval can be set to 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes by pressing the TIMER button.

Turning off the Sound+Sleep clears the Sleep Timer. Pressing the TIMER button when the Sound+Sleep is off will turn it on and set the Sleep Timer to 30 minutes. Pressing the TIMER button again will advance the timer to the next interval. After 120 minutes has been selected, pressing the TIMER button again turns the timer off.

Headphone Jack

A standard 3.5mm stereo headphone jack is located on the side of the unit. Any ordinary set of headphones or earbuds with a 3.5mm connector may be used. Connecting headphones or earbuds disables the Sound+Sleep’s built-in speaker, so it’s a great way to enjoy private relaxation.

As with any product, use common sense when using headphones. Avoid using them at high volume levels. Prolonged exposure to loud volume levels may impair your hearing.

Turning Off the Display

You may use the DISPLAY button to turn off the front panel lamps if they’re a distraction. If you adjust any settings while the display lamps are off, they will turn on for 15 seconds and then dim again. If you would like the front panel lights to stay on, press the DISPLAY button once more.

Sound Environments

Use the dial to select a sound category, and then press the selection button to choose an environment. Each sound category has three environments from which to choose. See the sound category list at the end of this guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

I can’t help but notice that this device is about 5 times more expensive than similar products. Is it really that much better?****

I purchased an older version of this model on April 4th, 2011 from Amazon. It was, I believe, over $100 at that time. I also had some issues at first, as the machine quit working. I called the manufacturing company direct and received excellent customer service. The customer service rep at first thought the problem could not be fixed but then advised a possible fix of reinserting the chip that runs the machine. I did so and the machine has worked now for 8+ years and has worked through thousands of hours of service over the past 8 years. So, yes, this company produces an excellent product. I own 3 sound machines. One is a Marpac, also expensive, and it is still working after 10 years or so but I like the sound this machine makes even better. The cheaper sound machines often will tend to diminish in volume if you use them a lot. For those of you who’ve had issues, call Ecotones and ask for help. You can tell by talking to their customer service reps that this is a company that actually cares about making a good product that satisfies the customer.

I am trying to keep my room as dark as possible while I’m sleeping. Are there any lights on the front of this? and if so can they be turned off? Power****

There is just a small square power light that is not bright at all. There is a display button to turn off the illuminated indicators on the front.

Is 120 minutes the max time for the timer?****

Matt, Yes, 2 hours is the max time for the timer. But, you can choose to not set the timer and it will operate until you turn it off in the morning. It’s wonderful, I love it. Two hours is enough for me. If I need to get up in the night, I just turn it back on when I get back in bed.

Can you disable the timer and just have it run all night?****

Yes. It will run without the timer.

Has anyone had success with this machine drowning out the sound of barking chihuahuas? I am blessed with a neighbor who apparently never hears them****

I live in Western NY, just outside of Buffalo. We have a decorative. Pond in the backyard that is loaded with Canadian geese. They never sleep at night. Honking, splashing. Etc. I used to want to cry just to get a good night’s sleep! I NEVER hear them anymore. This is THE best sound machine I have ever owned and I have owned many. My husband snores terribly too. I use Sleep phones plugged into it. It saved our relationship.

Is the voltage designed just for the U.S. or could it be used in Europe/Middle East?****

I believe that you would need a power adapter; there was nothing in the manual about compatibility with European power.

With so many reviews where people have had their machines to quit working what kind of warranty do they have in case this happens to the one I buy?****

I am with the manufacturer and we take care of our customers. The standard warranty is for 1 year. The memory card that comes with the MINI is guaranteed for the life of the machine.

Will it adapt to mask spouses C-pap machine, and if so which sound is best?****

Not sure what a C-pap machine sounds like but there are a wide variety of sounds that can be played and I am sure one will work well for you. And because it it digital, there doesn’t seem to be much if any repeating. Some of the cheaper sound machines just play a loop and while laying there you figure that out and listen for the next time something will come up. I love this unit and we use it every night. We play the ocean waves.

Do the wave sounds include seagulls and other aggravating noises or can you select waves only?****

You can select waves only (which I use, finding the “enhanced” variations distracting). There are 3 levels of enhancement (all the way up to barking seals apparently), but on setting 1 all the noises are appropriate background for sleeping.

Does this product block out airplane noise? Especially continuous humming/dronning sounds when the airplanes are circling or approaching?****

I don’t live close enough to an airport to know for sure, but I can tell you that it absolutely blocks out the noise of a fleet of snowploughs and snowblowers clearing the street in front of my house, so my best guess would be “yes”. Not all settings would work well for this, of course. I find the “rainfall” and “brook” settings best for blocking out random noises, while other settings like “train” or “meadow” seem better for situations where you just need soothing sounds to help you relax. I have not tried other noise machines (other than our summertime, window-mounted air conditioner), so I can’t offer a meaningful comparison with other products.

I live on a corner and I have sound like a loud moped that come by at 2 am randomly. How much would this help?****

It can help considerably. I have two in my bedroom, and by trial and error have figured out the best place to put them to keep outside noise at bay.

Is the sound full bodied and rich? We’ve tried several and I can best describe them as hollow sounding.****

This is the best sounding sound machine I have heard. It has 3 levels of “richness” which add extra sounds and depth. For even better sound it has a standard speaker jack so you can plug it into any larger speaker system.

How do I set for the adaptive technology to catch 12a-2a intermittent bar hollering without having to keep the volume setting consistently high?****

Cannot help you on this – I just turn mine on with the “rain setting” adjust the volume so that the white noise doesn’t wake me up – haven’t a clue on what you mean by “12a-2a intermittent bar – way too technical for my knowledge.
