Important safety warnings
-
The magnetic ski rack must strictly be fitted only onto the rooftop’s flat surface area.
-
Caution! The rounded-off side portions of the rooftop provide for very little grip-on strength.
-
Carefully check to see that the rack’s entire magnetic surface accurately grips onto the vehicle rooftop.
-
Do not fit the magnetic ski rack onto vehicles with a rounded or very short rooftop design.
-
Before starting off on each trip, check to see that magnet positioning is steady and stable.
The grip strength of an appropriately positioned magnetic ski rack is in excess of 40 kg, meaning that even when endeavouring to tug the ski rack off the rooftop at full strength, it should neither budge nor detach in the slightest.
Do not use the ski-rack when in doubt of its condition or performance. -
Reduce travel speed to 80 km/h, specially if travelling in against-wind directions.
-
Roof-mounted magnetic ski racks are liable to cause serious accidents if all given instructions are not accurately observed.
-
The vehicle driver is held responsible for correct ski-rack use.
-
Individuals that have not read these instructions should not be allowed to use the magnetic ski-rack.
-
The Manufacturer hereby declares that he cannot be held liable whenever any given instruction is not accurately observed or in the event of improper ski-rack use.
Prior to purchasing the magnetic ski- and snowboard rack, following points need to be checked and verified:
- Be careful to the height of your car when the ski- and snowboard rack is mounted if you drive into a garage (35 cm. without snowboard) (A)
- Does your car have a steel plate rooftop (B)?
- Does your car have a sliding or a pop-up style steel sunroof?
- If it does, would it be possible to fit the magnetic plate’s entire surface over the sliding/pop-up style sunroof or car roof, without it protruding over the sides (C)?
- This item is not suited to cars featuring sliding glass sunroofs!
- Does your car avail of an absolutely flat rooftop surface or an adequately large flat rooftop area?
- Does the surface of both magnetic plates entirely adhere to the rooftop (D)?
- In the event of protruding relief profiles, grooves or other non-flat rooftop features, a ski rack fitting trial must be conducted to ensure that the entire ski-rack surface perfectly grips onto the rooftop surface (E)
- Has the vehicles rooftop varnish finish be touched up (due to damage caused by hail, transport, etc.)? This may be possible even if your car is new! Use of repair filler materials (e.g. tin, glass fibre, filler bases) will bear a considerable influence on efficient magnet grip force!
- When a car is new or if a used car has just been re- varnished, the varnish may not yet be entirely dry whereby use of the ski-rack might lead to said varnish alterations.
For any one of these cases, actual purchase or possible future use of the magnetic ski- and snowboard rack is not recommended.
Purchase
If still in doubt, have you checked with the place of sale or retail point to
ensure that the magnetic ski racks are in fact actually suited to your vehicle
and have you read the vehicle registration document and car credentials to
make sure accordingly?
Should you still – all previous safety directions and instruction considered – be sure of purchasing the magnetic ski- and snowboard rack, please carefully follow the assembly instructions provided herein.
Assembly
- Responsibility for perfect magnetic plate operation and functions is guaranteed only if the entire magnetic surface accurately adheres to the vehicle rooftop.
- Prior to proceeding with rack assembly, ensure that the magnetic plates and the car rooftop area are both perfectly clean and dry! If not, maximised rack grip and prevention of rooftop abrasion hazards due to fine particles (dust/sand) cannot be guaranteed (1).
- Lock devices: once bracket clamp is open, you will note there is 1 red safety lock device pushbutton (2).
- Remove the magnetic element grey sealer caps: press in the red safety lock device pushbutton then rotate both black ski retainer units anticlockwise bya quarter ofa turn (2).
- The magnetic plate and the sealer cap can thus be pried open.
- Carefully position the magnetic plates (without the grey sealer caps) exactly in the centre of both the front and back rooftop ends.
- Consult the “Important Tips” section to check and ensure that the magnetic ski- and snowboard rack is positioned correctly.
- Adapt the distance kept between the two magnetic plates based on the actual rooftop shape and type of skis to be carried (type of ski boot buckles). If possible, arrange for an approx. 70 cm distance between the two magnetic plate centres (3).
- Carry out the perfect grip test: if it is not possible to slip a sheet of paper in under the magnetic plate, the plate is assembled on correctly (4).
- The magnetic ski- and snowboard racks must be assembled so that they line up exactly behind one another in the car’s travelling direction thus reducing the wind friction surface.
- The snowboards and the skis must be accurately locked in.
- Rotate the black ski retainer units on the magnetic plate so that the grey sealer caps are superimposed.
- Couple up the grey sealer caps (5).
- Lock in the magnetic element grey sealer caps by rotating both black ski retainer units clockwise bya quarter ofa turn (6).
- Check to see that the sealer cap sticks to the magnetic plate accurately and tightly so that it is kept immobile.
- For safety reasons, the magnetic device must be fixed onto the car rooftop by means of the appropriate safety cable, as shown (per EC Directive 79/488).
- Slip the safety belt internally to the car and position the plastic stop device so that the buckle is as close up as possible to the car door. In case of rainy weather, sling the safety belt only through the door strut to avoid water seeping in (7).
How to fix the skis:
- (F) for1pair of skis and 1 snowboard
- (G) for1pair of skis and 2 snowboards
- (H) for3pairs of skis (if necessary unthread the thickness)(I)
Warning!
If the magnetic ski- and snowboard rack is assembled onto a sliding orapop-up
style steel sunroof, be sure never to open the sunroof (8)!
Ski- and snowboard rack Removal
- Open up the bracket clamp: press in the red safety lock device pushbuttons then rotate both black ski retainer units anticlockwise bya quarter ofa turn (2).
- Lift magnetic element sealer caps.
- You will note the magnetic plate has a higher rise area (9).
- Carefully lift the plate off by manually prising up its higher rise area.
- Clean as instructed in the “Maintenance Tips” section then store the rack away in its original carry bag.
Additional Directions
- Assemble the ski- and snowboard rack only onto car rooftops.
- The magnetic plate must strictly be fitted only on absolutely clean and dry, snow, ice and frost free rooftop surfaces.
- Beware of the fact that in the event of accidental rack damages (i.e. if the magnets crash to the floor) its magnetic properties may be subject to variations (due to deformation, scratches on the magnets, etc.) thus compromising safe device use.
- If the magnetic plates are put into direct contact with one another (13) or are kept or held next to magnetic material, their magnetic force is considerably reduced. The magnetic plates can be influenced or damaged by electronic devices (such as MP3 players) or magnetic storage units (such as hard disks).
- The magnetic plate can damage magnet-sensible elements, units or devices such as credit cards, wristwatches, electronic data books, discs, magnetic computer bands, video and audio devices.
- If possible, avoid removing the magnetic ski- and snowboard rack from the car roof when you have reached the ski location parking area. Remember it does have an antitheft device!
- Leaving it assembled on will avoid dirt and snow deposits and the formation of ice and frost on the car roof surface.
- If the weather conditions were suddenly to change, the formation of frost and/or snow, twilight setting in, etc. might make reassembly of the ski- and snowboard rack more difficult
- Assembly of the ski- and snowboard rack in difficult conditions will not ensure perfect grip force and safe carriage of the skis/snowboards leading to accidents (as well as subsequent damages!)
- The ski- and snowboard rack should not be left assembled on the rooftop for weeks on end to avoid damaging the car paint finish. Furthermore, window cleaner additives might seep in under the magnetic plates with an ensuing chemical reaction causing the magnetic plate to glue down onto the rooftop surface. Exposure to direct sunlight and high temperatures will intensify this type of reaction.
- After every ski- and snowboard rack use session, it is important to rinse the ski/snowboard rack off with some warm water, especially after combined use of the car windscreen wipers.
- The insertion or application of any form of packing or thickness layer between the magnetic plates and the car rooftop is strictly prohibited.
Driving Tips
- Always lock the ski- and snowboard rack on, even whilst travelling. Doing so is the only way to ensure optimum safety (10).
- Travelling with the bracket clamp open is strictly prohibited! (11)
- Always remove the magnetic ski- and snowboard rack prior to passing through car wash rollers (12).
- During travel breaks, check the magnetic ski- and snowboard rack grip force and the position of the skis/snowboards.
- Depending on road surface and weather conditions (oncoming traffic lanes, heavy-duty trailers in tunnels, dangerous wind gusts) possibly ensuing turbulent flows might have a negative effect on the rack load and on the vehicle’s on-road performance.
- In such cases, cut vehicle speed down to 80 km/h.
- Any rooftop loads will influence the vehicle’s centre of gravity with subsequent influence on the car’s travel performance. Drive with care!
- Maximum load allowed in Switzerland: 50 kg; including ski or car rack loads, unless otherwise stated on the vehicle registration document (Check the data concerning permitted rooftop load specified on the car’s registration document or with your customary service garage/vehicle importer facility).
Maintenance Directions
- Notwithstanding the implementation of rust prevention and antirust protection measures as well as synthetic weatherproof materials, the ski- and snowboard racks do happen to be affected by winter use.
- For safety and maintenance of your magnetic ski- and snowboard rack, clean at regular intervals only by hand, using car detergent diluted in warm water.
- We recommend use of a car window cleaning additive: beware though that if the additives are much too aggressive, they might lead to magnetic plate damage.
- Protect rack locks, springs, coupling joints, etc. with appropriately selected graphite, silicone sprays or lubricants.
- When magnetic plates are removed after use, there might be a harmless film-like formation on the rooftop surface that is eliminated either using a car detergent or with some liquid car wax or Soft-Wax.
- Always keep the magnetic ski- and snowboard rack stored away in clean and dry conditions in its original carry bag.
- Do not hang the rack up on walls or metal tubes. The two magnetic plates must never be put into direct contact against one another (magnetic force reduction hazards) (13).
- Do not store the rack in the vicinity of devices sensible to magnets/affected by magnetism such as computers / CDs / disks / magnetic films / tape recorders / video recorders / electric power supply panels, etc. (to avoid and prevent ensuing damages!)
