PARTS OF THE PETCOVE PAWGUARD
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: HOW OLD DOES MY DOG NEED TO BE TO USE THE PAWGUARD SYSTEM?
A: Dogs must be at least 6 months old to safely use the Petcove PawGuard Wireless Pet Fence & Dog Training Collar. Before using this training collar, your dog should know basic obedience commands, such as “sit,” “stay,” “come,” “down,” and “heel.”
Q: HOW DO I KNOW THE RECEIVER COLLAR IS FITTED APPROPRIATELY TO MY DOG?
A: Place the collar around your dog’s neck and fasten the buckle according to the instructions on page 7. The collar should be tight enough that it cannot slide around, but loose enough that you can fit one finger between the collar and your dog’s neck.
Q: HOW LONG CAN MY DOG WEAR THE RECEIVER COLLAR?
A: Do not leave the collar on your dog for longer than 12 hours in a 24-hour period. Overuse can result in redness, sores, and skin irritation.
Q: CAN I ATTACH A LEASH TO THE RECEIVER COLLAR?
A: No. Attaching a leash to the receiver collar can result in the metal contact points being pulled too tightly, which can injure your dog. Only attach a leash to a separate, non-metal collar or harness. Always ensure the secondary collar or harness does not put extra pressure on the receiver collar as this can result in injury to your dog. Also, ensure the secondary collar or harness does not interfere with the receiver or contact points.
Q: ONCE MY DOG COMPLETES TRAINING AND HAS BEEN OBEYING COMMANDS CONSISTENTLY, WILL THEY NEED TO WEAR THE TRAINING COLLAR?
A: Probably not. However, you may wish to reinforce training on occasion with the training collar.
Q: HOW LONG SHOULD TRAINING SESSIONS WITH MY DOG BE?

Using Wireless Fence Mode
WARNING! Not all dogs can be trained to stay within a wireless fence boundary. Additionally, as sensitivity to correction levels will vary from dog to dog, there is no way to guarantee that the system will keep your dog within the set boundary at all times. Do not rely on this product as the sole method of restricting your dog to your yard if you have any reason to believe your dog could pose a danger to itself or others or cause property damage. It is important to regularly test which correction levels your dog will respond to and readjust the set correction intensity as needed. It is also important to reinforce wireless fence training on a regular basis.
SETTING UP THE WIRELESS FENCE BOUNDARY
The PawGuard system uses a built-in 2.4GHz signal antenna to create a circular
wireless fence boundary. The size of the boundary is adjustable, from 20 feet
to 500 feet in diameter, by increasing or decreasing the strength of the
wireless antenna signal.
To set up the wireless fence boundary:
-
Turn on the transmitter and then the receiver as instructed on page 6.
-
Press the Mode button to switch to Wireless Fence Mode (if not already in this mode). The F indicator LED will light up.
-
Press the + / – buttons to adjust the signal strength of the wireless antenna from 10 to 99.
a. Start by setting a rough estimate. For example, if you have a small yard, you might start with a signal strength of 10; if you have a large yard, you might start with 70. -
Hold the receiver as you walk in a straight line from the transmitter (which will be the center of the wireless fence boundary) across your yard until the receiver triggers the beep.
CAUTION: Never hold the receiver with both contact points touching your skin to avoid accidental static shock. -
Adjust the signal strength value as needed. Increase the signal strength to increase the diameter of the wireless fence; decrease the signal strength to reduce the diameter.
-
Once the signal strength is set, the wireless dog fence is active and any receiver leaving the area of the wireless fence boundary will trigger the correction sequence. See WIRELESS FENCE MODE CORRECTION SEQUENCE on the next page.
-
Place the included white and yellow marker flags to mark the circular perimeter of the wireless dog fence to help train your dog not to go beyond it.
-
Now, you’re ready to begin training your dog to stay inside the set boundary. Please note that it is important to reinforce wireless fence training on a regular basis.
NOTE: Unfortunately, it is not possible to equate a signal strength value with a specific distance, because 2.4GHz signals are one-way and can be obstructed by hills, trees, buildings, and other environmental features.
WIRELESS FENCE MODE CORRECTION SEQUENCE
When the dog leaves the circular boundary of the wireless fence boundary, the
following correction sequence is triggered. The correction sequence will stop
as soon as the dog re-enters the circular boundary.
| TRANSMISSION SCHEDULE| CORRECTION TRANSMITTED| CORRECTION

Using Remote Training Mode
WARNING! Not for use with aggressive dogs. Do not use this product if
your dog is prone to aggressive behavior. Aggressive dogs can cause severe
injury to their owner or others. If you are not sure that this product is
right for your dog, please talk to your veterinarian or a certified trainer.
Stop using the product immediately if your dog begins behaving aggressively.
STEP 1: SETTING APPROPRIATE STATIC AND VIBRATION INTENSITY LEVELS
The goal of the warning vibrations and static correction is simply to get your
dog’s attention and interrupt the unwanted behavior. Having the correction
intensity set too high can harm your dog and impede training. Therefore, it is
important to always start with the lowest warning vibration and static
correction settings that your dog will respond to and increase only if
necessary. Each dog will have a different sensitivity level to the vibrations
and static corrections, so it is very important to start by determining your
dog’s individual sensitivity level.
To test which intensity level your dog can feel:
-
Turn on the transmitter and the receiver as instructed on page 6.
-
Press the Mode button to switch to Remote Training Mode (if not already in this mode). The R indicator LED will light up.
-
Press the Channel button to toggle through the three channels to select the receiver for the correct dog.
-
Set the static correction to the lowest intensity, level 1.
-
Put the training collar on your dog.
-
Wait until your dog is near you, but not paying attention to you. Then, press the Static button to transmit a static correction.
a. Look for any reaction, such as your dog turning their head or twitching an ear.
b. If your dog yelps or appears distressed in any way by the lowest static intensity, stop using the training collar immediately! -
If your dog does not react, increase the static correction intensity to level 2.
-
Increase the static correction, one level at a time, and stop as soon as your dog has a visible reaction. If at any time, your dog yelps or appears distressed, decrease the correction level immediately.
-
Repeat the above steps to set the warning vibration to an appropriate intensity level.
NOTES:
- Before using this training collar, your dog should know basic obedience commands, such as “sit,” “stay,” “come,” “down,” and “heel.”
- Using a training collar can help deter unwanted behaviors, but it can also exacerbate behavioral problems if used inappropriately. Always follow the instructions in this manual.
- Static shock correction is designed to get your dog’s attention and deter them from unwanted behavior without putting them in unnecessary pain. If your dog yelps in pain or displays other signs of distress, the correction intensity is likely set too high. If this occurs, it is very important to decrease the intensity level of the static correction immediately.
- Only use static correction when paired with an appropriate verbal command. Never transmit a static correction for no reason.
- The included test tool allows you to test the receiver to make sure the static corrections are working. However, if you wish to, you may test the static correction on yourself to get a sense of what it might feel like for your dog. It is important to be aware that your sensitivity to the static may be quite different from your dog’s. Start at intensity level 1 and place both metal contact points on the skin of your arm. If you don’t feel it on your arm, try using it on your fingertips which are more sensitive. Only increase the static intensity as far as you’re comfortable; if it begins to feel painful or uncomfortable, stop!
STEP 2: USING THE TRAINING COLLAR
- Turn on the transmitter and the receiver as instructed on page 6.
- Press the Mode button to switch to Remote Training Mode (if not already in this mode). The R indicator LED will light up.
- Press the Channel button to toggle through the three channels to select the receiver to transmit a correction to.
- Pair an appropriate verbal command with an appropriate warning or correction for the unwanted behavior:
a. Press the Sound button to transmit two warning tones to the selected receiver. The sound icon will flash on the display screen and the indicator LED on the receiver will flash blue four times.
b. Press the Vibration button to transmit a 2-second warning vibration to the selected receiver. The vibration icon will flash on the display screen and the indicator LED on the receiver will flash blue four times.
c. Press the Static button to transmit a 2-second static correction to the selected receiver.
The static icon will flash on the display screen and the indicator LED on the receiver will flash red four times.
NOTE: The length of the transmitted static correction, warning tone, or warning vibration corresponds to how long the correction button is held—up to a maximum of 10 seconds.
TIPS FOR USING THE TRAINING COLLAR
- To help your dog become accustomed to the training collar before beginning training, you may choose to have them wear the collar for a couple of hours a day for a week.
- Keep training sessions short and positive to help your dog focused and attentive. Aim for no more than 10-15 minutes each session and always end the session on a positive note.
- Train only one dog at a time.
- Always use a long leash during training sessions. Only attach the leash to a separate, non-metal collar or harness. Always ensure the secondary collar or harness does not put extra pressure on the receiver collar as this can result in injury to your dog. Ensure the secondary collar or harness does not interfere with the receiver or contact points.
- Always generously praise and reward your dog with treats and love when they respond to commands with the requested behavior.
- Only work on one obedience command at a time to avoid confusing your dog and help them stay focused.
- Before beginning a training session, always know exactly which command you will be focusing on.
- If your dog seems confused by a new command, shift the training to a command they already know. Then give them lots of praise and encouragement when they successfully follow the command.
- When teaching your dog new commands, always begin with the verbal command before trying to reinforce the command with the training collar.
- Conduct the first few training sessions in a familiar outdoor environment. Training in new locations can cause your dog to become distracted, which may result in needing to reinforce verbal commands with the training collar more than necessary.
- Reinforcing commands with the training collar:
- Do not use the training collar for commands your dog has not yet learned.
- Avoid overcorrecting your dog. Use as little training collar correction as possible during training sessions.
- For basic obedience training, vibration warnings are often the most effective for disrupting unwanted behavior.
- Always begin by pairing an appropriate verbal command, such as “off” or “no”, with a warning tone or warning vibration to disrupt the unwanted behavior. For some pets, this is enough to disrupt and discourage unwanted behavior.
- Only use static correction sparingly. We recommend only using static correction as a last resort for major behavioral offenses.
- If using static correction, always transmit a warning vibration before the static correction. Over time, your dog should come to recognize the vibration as a warning before the static, which may make the static unnecessary in most cases.
WARNING SIGNS YOUR DOG IS DISTRESSED
If your dog displays any of the following behaviors, you are likely over-
correcting or overusing the
training collar:
- Your dog yelps after a static correction. If this occurs, it is very important to decrease the intensity level of the static correction immediately.
- Your dog whimpers or appears fearful, agitated, or stressed when you put on the training collar or after a static correction.
- Your dog shows signs of distress including:
- Loss of appetite, running and hiding, becoming withdrawn, backing away, not wanting to engage or play, sleeping too much, whining, excessive licking or chewing on fur, apathy, ignoring you, appearing too weak to move, yawning, lip licking, or backing away.
- Lowered ears, tail tucked between the back legs, or raised hackles when around another dog.
- Your dog displays new aggressive behavior, such as snarling, growling, lunging, snapping, or biting and shaking.
- Your dog begins to eliminate in the house (and this was not a previous behavioral issue).
RE-PAIRING THE RECEIVER (OPTIONAL)
The receiver is paired to the transmitter in the factory. If you wish to
change the channel used by the receiver:

TIPS FOR USE
- Carefully read through all safety warnings and cautions before using and follow all operating instructions.
- This system is designed for dogs at least 6 months old and at least 15 lbs.
- If you are not sure if this product is right for your dog, consult with your veterinarian or a certified dog trainer.
- Please use this system in an open area. The transmitter should be placed at least 3 feet above the ground to avoid radio-signal disturbance.
- Train only one dog at a time.
USING THE COLLAR & AVOIDING IRRITATION
- Never attach a leash to the receiver collar, as doing so can cause the metal contact points to press too tightly against your dog’s neck, resulting in pain or injury. Always attach a leash to a separate non-metal collar or harness. Ensure the secondary collar does not put pressure on the receiver’s contact points.
- Do not leave the receiver collar on your dog for more than 12 hours in a 24-hour period to avoid skin irritation.
- To avoid skin irritation, always remove the collar when not in use.
- The included silicone caps can be placed on the contact points to improve comfort for your pet.
- Check the fit and comfort of the collar every day. If redness, a rash, or a sore is found, discontinue using the collar until the skin is completely healed.
- If redness or skin irritation persists for longer than 48 hours, consult with your veterinarian.
- We recommend repositioning the collar slightly every 1–2 hours to avoid skin irritation on your pet’s neck.
- Keep your dog’s neck clean to keep the receiver clean and avoid signal disruption or skin irritation. We recommend cleaning your dog’s neck and the contact points at least once a week with a soft, damp cloth.
- Ensure the collar is not too tight. You should be able to insert one finger between the collar and your dog’s neck.
- If your dog has medium or long hair, you may need to use the long contact points. You may need to trim the hair on your dog’s neck, so that both contact points can touch the skin. Do not shave your dog’s neck as this can result in skin irritation or infection.
