LOMANCO IB-8 8 Inch Turbine Vent

Product Information

Specifications:

  • Model: IB-8 Turbine Vent
  • Installation: Residential attic use only as an exhaust vent in a balanced ventilation system
  • Compatibility: Can be installed on existing galvanized or aluminium turbine bases of appropriate size

Product Usage Instructions

  1. Checking Turbine Functionality:
Before installing, ensure that the turbine turns freely. If there is any wobble, gently pry the lowest point of the turbine upward for minor adjustments.

  2. Locating and Marking the Hole:
Locate the base opening between the rafters and mark the hole to be cut. Tap the roof to locate the rafters. Please note that the 8 turbine base, model VP-8, is sold separately.

  3. Cutting and Sealing the Hole:
Cut the hole as marked and seal around the entire perimeter of the hole with roofing cement.

  4. Securing the Flashing:
Slide the top half of the flashing under the shingles and secure it with nails at the top, sides, and bottom.

  5. Adjusting and Positioning the Base:
Set the base in position and loosen the screws on the barrel. Rotate and adjust until the top sits in a vertical and level position.

  6. Securing and Sealing the Base:
Place the locking clamp across the seam and tighten it using the included screw from the 8 turbine base, model VP-8. Seal the adjusting seam and the base/elbow connection seam on the inside with roofing cement. Also, seal the locking clamp holes and all exposed nails with roofing cement.

  7. Attaching the Turbine Head:
Position the turbine head on the base and line up the predrilled holes in the brackets and elbow. Fasten them together using sheet metal screws.

  8. Final Check:
After installation, double-check to ensure that the turbine vent turns freely.

FAQ:

  • Q: Where should turbine vents be installed?
A: Turbine vents should be located near the peak of the roof on the rear slope, exposed to the wind from all directions. When installing three vents, one should be installed 1/6 of the total length of the roof peak from each end of the house, and one should be installed in the centre.

  • Q: How should exhaust vents be installed?
A: Install all exhaust ventilation at the same height within a common attic area. Avoid installing exhaust vents at different heights or down the hip. Only install one type of exhaust vent.

  • Q: Can turbine vents be covered in colder months?
A: No, turbine vents should not be covered in colder months. They help remove damaging moisture from attics, preventing condensation and insulation damage.

How To Locate and Space

IB-8 Turbine Vent

Proper Spacing With Two Turbine Vents Installed
Turbine vents should be located near the peak of the roof on the rear slope, exposed to the wind from all directions. When installing two, place each one ¼ of the total length of the roof peak from each end of the house.

Example:
On a 40′ roof, each turbine vent should be 10′ from each end of the house.

Proper Spacing With Three Turbine Vents Installed
Turbine vents should be located near the peak of the roof on the rear slope, exposed to the wind from all directions. When installing three, one should be installed 1/6 of the total length of the roof peak from each end of the house and one should be installed in the centre.

Example:
On a 60′ roof, the two outside turbine vents should be 10′ from each end of the house – and the centre one should be 30′ from either end of the house.

A Properly Ventilated Attic Must Have Intake and Exhaust Vents

Do’s and Don’ts for attic ventilation.

  • DO install all Exhaust Ventilation at the SAME HEIGHT within a common attic area. Installation of exhaust vents at more than one level on a roof allows the upper exhaust vent to wrongly pull air in from lower exhaust vent rather than from the soffit Intake Vents.
  • DON’T install exhaust vents at different heights.
  • Don’t install Ridge Vents down the hip.
  • DO install ONLY ONE TYPE of Exhaust Ventilation within a common attic area. Exhaust Vents pull air from the easiest Intake source. The use of two or more types of exhaust vents such as Power Vents with Roof Vents or Gable Vents with Ridge Vents or Roof Vents could make one of these vents act as intake instead of pulling air from the soffit vents.
  • DON’T mix different types of exhaust vents.
  • DO install a BALANCED SYSTEM of Intake and Exhaust Ventilation. 50% Intake and 50% Exhaust is a balanced system. Improper intake may lead to snow or rain infiltration into the exhaust vents.
