PRODUCT

INTRODUCTION

Lyr+ is the most advanced desktop-sized product we’ve ever produced. Combining all-new Fusion Architecture™ that lets you use tube or solid state gain, relay ladder volume control, advanced microprocessor protection, and re-mote control, it’s a technological tour de force. Now, you can roll all the tubes you want…and still have a great solid-state amp whenever you want. We hope you enjoy your time with Lyr+—we certainly had plenty of fun developing it!

WHAT’S IN THE BOX

  • (1) Lyr+
  • (1) Lyr+ Tube Cover
  • (1) Remote Control
  • (1) Power cord
  • (1) 6SN7 type tube (if you ordered it with Lyr+)

The following is required by the roughly 9,542 government agencies and regulations we have to comply with. If you have some common sense, they should seem pretty straightforward. In any case, read these instructions before proceeding farther, follow all instructions, and heed all warnings. Or else!

  1. If you don’t know how to install audio devices, get a qualified professional to help.
  2. Never use this device near water, and clean only with a dry cloth.
  3. Assure adequate ventilation, do not block any ventilation openings, or place near heat sources.
  4. Use only the supplied power cord or suitable replacement. Route cords away from traffic areas and protect them from being pinched. Unplug the cord from the outlet if the apparatus is unused for a long period of time.
  5. To prevent electric shock, do not use the plug with an extension cord, receptacle, or outlet unless blades can be fully inserted.
  6. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. Service is required when the device has been damaged, including cord or plug damage, liquid has been spilled or objects have fallen into the device, the device has been exposed to rain or moisture, does not operate normally, or has been dropped.

WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF FIRE OR ELECTRIC SHOCK, DO NOT EXPOSE THIS DEVICE TO RAIN OR MOISTURE.

GETTING STARTED

No Tube? It’s easy. Just plug in Lyr+ and turn it on. The mode and gain lights will flash for 30-45 seconds, then Lyr+ will enable its output. If you aren’t going to use a tube for a while, you can cover the hole with the supplied Tube Cover.

Yes Tube? It’s still easy. Just follow these steps:

  1. Before plugging in, insert the tube. Carefully align the key in the tube base to the notch in the tube socket.
  2. Ensure the tube is well-seated. Push down firmly until the tube is seated on the tube socket.
  3. Plug in and turn on. The tube will glow after a few seconds. As before, the mode and gain lights will flash while Lyr+ self-checks, and then it will unmute.
  4. Connect your system. Plug in up to two sources, plug in your headphones, and, if you like, use the preamp outputs for a speaker amp or sub. And enjoy!

Replacing or Swapping Tubes

  1. Turn off and unplug. Wait for the tube to cool.
  2. Carefully extract the tube by gently rocking it back and forth and pulling it upwards.
  3. Carefully insert the replacement tube. Align the key to the notch and press down firmly until the tube is seated.
  4. Plug the Lyr+ back in and turn it on.

CONTROLS

FIG-3

  1. Input Select. Press this button to toggle between the two inputs. To the right of the button, the selected input lights up.
  2. Preamp Output Enable. Push the button to enable and disable the preamp output. The light to the right indicates when the preamp outs are on.
  3. Volume Control. Turn up till the music sounds good, but before your ears turn to taffy.
  4. Mode Indicator. When this light is on, Lyr+ is using its internal solid-state gain stage. When it’s off, then it’s running tube gain. Remember, you can’t run tube gain without a tube!
  5. Gain/Mode Select. Push this button to toggle between low and high gain modes. When changing gain, the gain light will flash briefly If you don’t have the remote handy, you can also press and hold the Gain/Mode switch for 4 seconds or more to change operating modes. When you release the button, the mode light will flash for up to 40 seconds during the mode change.
  6. Headphone Jack. Plug your headphones in here, using a standard 1/4” TRS plug.

REMOTE CONTROL

  1. Input. Press this button to select the input you want to listen to. If you skip the input, keep pressing—it cycles back around.
  2. Tube/MOSFET Mode. When you have a tube installed, you can switch back and forth between tube and MOSFET gain modes by pressing this button. The Mode light will flash for up to 40 seconds while changing modes. If you don’t have a tube installed, this button won’t do anything.
  3. Gain. Toggle between low and high gain with this button. The Gain light will flash briefly when changing modes. We recommend turning down the volume before switching to high gain, as it is significantly higher than low gain.
  4. Mute. Press to mute Lyr+—headphones, preamp outs, and everything goes off.
  5. Preamp Output Enable/Disable. Press to enable or disable the preamp outputs.
  6. Volume Up/Down. Press the up arrow to turn the volume up, and press the down arrow to turn it down. Simple!

Note: To change the remote battery, push the front off the remote using a paperclip through the back hole, then replace with the same size and type.

CONNECTIONS

  1. RCA Inputs. Connect up to 2 inputs to Lyr+ using RCA cables. The inputs are conveniently numbered “1” and “2” to match the front panel indicators. Select the input you want to listen to using the front panel button or the remote control.
  2. Preamp Output. Optionally, connect this output to a separate power amp (or subwoofer) using RCA cables. You can switch on and off the preamp output using the front panel button or the remote control.
  3. On-Off Switch. Up is on. Down is off. Pretty simple, right?
  4. AC Input. Plug the power cord in here. Plug the other end into an outlet of the correct voltage. Trying to run a 115V product on 230V will blow the fuse and generally make for a bad, bad day.

FAQ

Why do the Gain and Mode lights both flash after I turn Lyr+ on?
The two lights flash to let you know Lyr+ is coming up to its correct operating point. Lyr+ monitors operational parameters as it is turning on, and only connects the output when everything is fine. This can take up to 40 seconds.

When I switch gain, the lights flash again?
The gain light flashes after you change gain, while Lyr’s microprocessor protection system mutes the output, and monitors operational points until all is settled and ready to go. I get a flashing light when switching mode too. Also normal. Lyr+ will flash the mode light while it is stabilizing when changing modes. This can take up to 40 seconds.

What’s with all the clicking noises when I turn the volume?
That’s the sound of the mechanical relays in the relay-switched stepped attenuator. Also normal.

What kind of tubes can I use in Lyr+?
Use only 6SN7-type tubes, including 6N8S, 5692, and (of course) 6SN7.

Can I leave Lyr+ on all the time?
You can, but it would be best to do it with no tube inserted. The tube heater is on all the time, and leaving it powered on all the time will shorten the tube lifespan. The Lyr+ clicks and I don’t hear any music, then it clicks back on, over and over again. Lyr+ is running into protection. This can mean a shorted headphone cable or an incompatible cable, like a TRRS cable with a bad 1/4” converter. Try Lyr+ with a different headphone, check you headphone cables, and, if you want to use a TRRS headphone, we sell a connection kit here: schiit.com/trrs

It doesn’t turn on, what do I do?
Plug it into a different AC socket. Ensure you are not currently in a blackout. Then email us if it still doesn’t work.
