AURO-3D® Technology
AURO-3D® Format
The AURO-3D® format is a high-quality audio format that provides a realistic
sound experience. By reproducing the sounds that move around us in our daily
lives and the sounds coming from above, it creates a three-dimensional and
immersive sound.
Auro-Matic
Auro-Matic® – this up-mixing technology converts any existing content without
height, from stereo and surround (2D), to the requested AURO-3D® format (3D)
or any compatible speaker setup. This is used to convert any legacy content
(i.e. not Auro-encoded) from Mono, Stereo and Surround to an AURO-3D® format.
Unlike most other up-mixing technologies on the market, Auro-Matic® leaves the
original channels of the input source intact instead of steering parts of it
to particular speakers. The sophisticated adaptive processing places the
original recording in a 3-dimensional environment that matches the acoustical
properties of the recording, creating an immersive sound field that creates
the impression of being in the same environment as where the recording was
taking place. Depending on the content more or less spatial cues can be
detected for the 3D extrapolation algorithm, resulting in slightly different
experiences.
Listening Modes
AURO-3D®
This mode creates expansive height around the listener by forming the AURO3D®
proprietary Height Layer on the conventional Surround Layer, thereby
recreating a three-dimensional sound field.
In this listening mode, the Auro-3D® engine creates an immersive 3D experience
on all supported speakers, regardless of the input signal. This means that
content that has been encoded using Auro-Codec® is decoded (and further up-
mixed if necessary), and other content is up-mixed for the selected speaker
configuration.”
Auro Surround
Auro Surround is a mode that creates a sound field using only the Surround
Layer speakers and without using Height speakers.
In this listening mode, the Auro-3D® engine creates a perfect sound experience
using all speakers in the Surround Layer, regardless of the input signal.
Therefore, the content that has been encoded using Auro-Codec® is decoded (and
further up-mixed if necessary), and all other content is up-mixed to the
speaker configuration of supported sound (normally 5.1 or 7.1).
Playback of AURO-3D®
Playback of AURO-3D® is very simple. After playing existing content or Auro
content, you can switch to the AURO-3D® listening mode by repeatedly pressing
the SURROUND button on the remote control. Similarly, you can select “Auro
Surround” using the same steps.

Required Speakers for AURO-3D® Playback
AURO-3D® playback requires height speakers. You can play audio with just one pair of height speakers, but having two pairs will provide the best performance.
Possible combinations for Height speakers compatible with AURO-3D®
- Front High speaker and Rear High speaker *Figure 1
- Front High speaker and Top Rear speaker
- Front High speaker and Dolby Enabled Speaker (Surround)
- Front High speaker and Dolby Enabled Speaker (Surround Back)
- Top Front speaker and Top Rear speaker
- Top Front speaker and Rear High speaker
- Top Front speaker and Dolby Enabled Speaker (Surround)
- Top Front speaker and Dolby Enabled Speaker (Surround Back)
- Dolby Enabled Speaker (Front and Surround)
- Dolby Enabled Speaker (Front and Surround Back)
- Dolby Enabled Speaker (Front) and Rear High speaker
- Dolby Enabled Speaker (Front) and Top Rear speaker
- If you have only one pair of Height speakers, please use either Front High speaker or Top Front speaker. Other speaker combinations are not supported.
Recommended Speaker Layout for AURO-3D®
For AURO-3D®’s recommended speaker layout, you will use Front Highspeakers
(FHL, FHR) and Rear High speakers (RHL, RHR) as Height speakers.
These speakers should be positioned directly above the Front and Surround
speakers.
- Please refer to AURO-3D® “HOME THEATER SYSTEMS”-“SETUP”- “DOWNLOAD” on https://www.auro-3d.com/
- Additionally, you can still enjoy AURO-3D® using the speaker layout provided in the instruction manual(VSX-LX805, VSA-LX805).
Auro settings
- Press on the remote controller, and from Home displayed select “System Setup” – “Audio Adjust” – “AURO-3D” – to make the settings.
AURO-3D Listening Mode (Default Value:AURO-3D)
When detecting the AURO-3D® format, you can set whether to output sound from
all speakers or from the same speakers as the input signal.
AURO-3D
Decodes and up-mixes the Auro content, playing it on all the configured
speakers.
Native
Plays back the audio included in natively decoded Auro content without any up-
mixing.
Auro-Matic Preset (Default Value:Medium)
This setting adjusts the Auro-Matic Preset effect.
- It applies when playing music or movies that do not contain the AURO-3D® format, but are played back with AURO-3D or Auro Surround.
Small | This preset is suitable for playing chamber music |
---|---|
Medium | This preset is suitable for playing movies, TV shows, and music genres |
like pop and jazz.
Large| This preset is suitable for playing sources recorded in large spaces,
such as orchestral performances.
Movie| This preset is suitable for playing movies with intense action scenes,
including big explosions.
Speech| This preset is suitable for playing content where the majority of the
audio is speech, such as news programs, with minimal spatial information.
Auro-Matic Strength (Default Value:12)
You can select the level of the up-mix effect in the Auro-Matic up-mixer from
“0” to “15”. Setting it to “0” disables the up-mix, while setting it to “15”
maximizes the effect. Increasing the level will increase the volume of the up-
mixed signals in the Surround Layer and Height Layer.
- This setting applies when playing music or movies that do not contain the AURO-3D® format but are played back with AURO-3D or Auro Surround.
