USING A BOTTOMLESS PORTAFILTER
Produce an even extraction with a rich crema when you use this bottomless
portafilter and a single-layer single-cup filter to brew espresso barista
style. We suggest bottomless style brewing for advanced or expert espresso
brewers.
Ensure the filter is dry to avoid coffee sticking to it. Ground coffee texture
changes the speed of the grind.
Coarser is faster and finer is slower. This bottomless portafilter will allow
each barista to visually examine their technique and learn how to improve upon
it by diagnosing errors. Adjust the grind size, tamp pressure, and quality/
age of the coffee to improve your brewing technique and make espresso with
richer crema.
CAUTION!
Using a bottomless portafilter can produce spurts of espresso which can spray
the machine, counter and the user with espresso.
This is caused by incorrectly dosed/tamped powder or incorrect grind size.
Avoid direct contact with the hot liquid when using a bottomless portafilter.
Snap a single-layer single cup filter to your bottomless portafilter. Ensure
it is fully locked.
When tamping, use the same amount of pressure it takes to remove a tight lid
from a jar (about 30 pounds of pressure). Fill with fine ground coffee until
slightly overflowing. Level with your fingers, then tamp down with about 30
pounds of pressure. Wipe away excess.
Put portafilter in brew bracket. If using the Mueller Espresso Machine, the brew bracket is on right side of machine. Rotate portafilter towards the center to lock it in place.
Continue to brew espresso according to your machine’s instructions.
NOTE: The single-layer single-cup filter and the tamper are not included
with the Bottomless Portafilter when sold separately from the Mueller Espresso
Machine.
