UNPACKING

After unpacking the unit, inspect carefully for any damage that may have occurred during transit. Check for loose, missing, or damaged parts. If any damage is observed, a shipping damage claim must be filed with the carrier.

DO NOT use the OEMTOOLS® 24336 500 Amp 12V Battery Load Tester if broken, bent, cracked or damaged parts (including labels) are noted. Any Battery Tester that appears damaged in any way, operates abnormally or is missing parts should be removed from service immediately. If you suspect that the Battery Tester was subjected to shock load (a load that was dropped suddenly, unexpectedly, etc.) Immediately discontinue use until it has been checked by a factory authorized service center.

IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS AND SAFETY RULES

1. Know your product. Read this manual carefully. Learn the product’s applications and limitations, as well as potential hazards specific to it. The use of this product is simple and straightforward if you follow the instructions. When operating this product, use common sense and only use this product for its intended purpose.
2. Maintain labels and nameplates on this product. These carry important information. If unreadable or missing, contact OEMTOOLS® for a replacement.
3. Maintain this product with care. Keep it dry and clean – and free from brake fluid, oil, and grease (if applicable).
4. Check for damage. Check your product regularly. If part of the product is damaged, it should be carefully inspected to make sure that it can perform its intended function correctly. If in doubt, the part should be repaired. Refer all servicing to a qualified technician. Consult your dealer for advice.
5. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, and any other condition that may affect the product’s operation.
6. DO NOT use a damaged product. Tag damaged products “DO NOT USE” until repaired. If damaged, have the product serviced before using. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained products.
7. Service must be performed only by qualified repair personnel. Service or maintenance performed by unqualified personnel could create a risk of injury.
8. When servicing a product, use only identical replacement parts. Use of unauthorized parts or failure to follow maintenance instructions could create a risk of injury.
9. Use only accessories that are recommended by the manufacturer for your model. Accessories that may be suitable for one product may become hazardous when used on another product.
10. Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark work areas invite accidents.
11. Maintain a safe working environment. Keep the work area well lit. Make sure there is adequate surrounding workspace. Keep the work area free of obstructions, grease, oil, trash, and other debris. DO NOT use this product in a damp or wet location.
12. Keep children away from the work area. Never let a child handle this product without strict adult supervision.
13. Store this product out of the reach of children and untrained persons. This product may be dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
14. DO NOT operate this product if under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Read warning labels on prescriptions to determine if your judgment or reflexes are impaired while taking drugs. If there is any doubt, DO NOT attempt to operate.
15. Use safety equipment. Eye protection should be worn at all times when operating this product. Use ANSI approved safety glasses. Everyday eyeglasses are NOT safety glasses. Dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat or hearing protection should be used in appropriate conditions.
16. Wear proper apparel. Loose clothing, gloves, neck-ties, rings, bracelets or other jewelry may present a potential hazard when operating this product. Keep all apparel clear of the product.
17. DO NOT overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times when operating this product.
18. Keep away from flammables. DO NOT attempt to operate this product near flammable materials or combustibles. Failure to comply may cause serious injury or death.
19. Avoid accidental fire and/or explosion. DO NOT smoke near engine fuel and battery components.
20. We believe the information contained herein to be reliable. However, general technical information is given by us without charge and the user shall employ such information at their own discretion and risk. We assume no responsibility for results or damages incurred from the use of such information in whole or in part. Always refer to specific instructions and technical information supplied by vehicle manufacturer.

SPECIFIC SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS AND WARNINGS

1. When connecting the Battery Cables to the battery, avoid creating sparks – especially when the battery is being charged. Explosive gases are created.
2. DO NOT touch the cooling vents on the Load Tester during or immediately after testing the battery; they become very hot.
3. When placing the Load Tester in the vehicle’s engine compartment, take special care that the metal housing of the Tester does not come in contact with either terminal of the battery or other electrical connections.
4. Be certain of the test battery polarity before connecting the test Cable Clamps. The red Cable Clamp goes tothe positive terminal of the battery. The black Cable Clamp goes to the negative terminal of the battery. Reversing Load Tester Cable Clamps on the battery will damage the tester.
5. DO NOT drop the Load Tester as it may affect proper operation.
6. DO NOT smoke or have open flames near the battery.
7. DO NOT connect the Load Tester to the battery while the engine is running. Turn the engine off before connecting.

WARNING: Remove all metal items from your body (rings, bracelets, watches, etc.) to avoid risk of electric shock and severe burns.
WARNING: During use, the metal casing will get hot enough to burn skin or cause property damage. Always carry the product by the handle. If the handle becomes hot, allow the tester to cool prior to attempting use.

TESTING PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS

1. Wipe the battery terminals with a cloth to remove any irt and grease.
2. Make sure the Load Knob (C) is in the OFF position. Connect the red (positive) Cable Clamp (A) to the positive terminal (+) on the 12V battery.
3. Connect the black (negative) Cable Clamp (B) to the negative terminal (–) on the battery.
4. Turn the Load Knob (C) clockwise until the DC ammeter reads 1/2 the Cold Cranking Amp (CCA) rating or three times the amp hour (Ah) capacity of the battery. The CCA and Ah rating are printed on the battery label. Maintain load for 15 seconds to simulate an actual load on the battery. After 15 seconds, the unit will make a beep sound.
5. View the DC Volts Meter and read the battery condition. Refer to the “Battery Condition Analysis” section on the next page.
6. Turn the Load Knob (C) counterclockwise to OFF, and remove the Cable Clamps from the battery

NOTE: Freezing temperatures affect the battery test reading. Decrease the battery rating 50 cold cranking amps for each 50°F (10°C) below freezing 30°F (0°C).

TESTING SYSTEM INSTRUCTIONS

1. Turn the Load Knob (C) counterclockwise to the OFF position.
2. Connect the Cable Clamps to the battery as previously described.
3. Outside, start the vehicle engine and run at fast idle speed.
4. View the DC Volt Meter and read the Alternator & Regulator condition. Refer to the “Battery Condition Analysis” section below.
5. Turn the vehicle’s engine off, then remove the Load Tester Cable Clamps.

WARNING: Avoid Carbon Monoxide Poisoning. This gas comes from the vehicle’s exhaust and is colorless and odorless. It can cause SERIOUS INJURY and DEATH if inhaled.

BATTERY CONDITION ANALYSIS

LOAD TEST / 15 Sec. (Display Reading) Battery Condition

OK (Green area)

Battery Capacity is good. May or may not be fully charged. Check the charge state by testing the Specific Gravity (SG) with a Hydrometer. If SG is less than full charge, check for possible charging system trouble. Recharge to full level.

BAD (Red area)

If the DC Volt Meter needle is failing, the battery is defective or has a bad cell. For a quick check, turn the Load Knob down (counterclockwise) and note DC Volts Meter reaction. If voltage recovers to its full potential after only a few seconds, the battery is probably defective. If the voltage recovers slowly, the battery may only be run down. Check specific gravity level, recharge, and retest.

CHARGING SYSTEM (Alt. & Reg. Test)

If the DC Volt Meter needle reads OK, charging system is functional. If it falls on the low red or high red areas, charging system may be malfunctioning.

STARTER MOTOR TEST

1. If starting your vehicle is difficult, you may have unnecessary starter motor draw, which dramatically shortens battery life. This test identifies starter motor performance.
2. Make sure your engine is running at normal operating temperature, and that the battery is fully charged and in good condition.
3. Connect the Red Clamp to the positive (+) terminal post on the battery. Connect the Black Clamp to the negative (-) terminal post on the battery.
4. Turn the Load Knob (C) counterclockwise to the OFF position.
5. Disable the engine to make sure the car will not start. Refer to your vehicle’s service manual.
6. While watching the DC Volt scale, crank the engine briefly to determine the voltage reading during cranking. A display reading of 9 volts or less indicates excessive current draw. This may be caused by a bad connection of a failing starter motor, or the battery is too small for the vehicle’s requirements. Consult a qualified mechanic.
7. When starter motor test is complete, remove Black (-) Clamp from battery first; then remove Red (+) Clamp.

INSPECTION, MAINTENANCE, AND CLEANING

1. Periodically check all nuts, bolts, and screws for tightness.
2. Store in a clean, dry location.
3. Clean the outside of the unit with a damp cloth. Never use solvents to clean any parts of this tool. Use compressed air to blow out debris from the load vents. Allow tool to dry completely before use.
4. After each use, clean the cable clamps of any possible battery electrolyte. Apply a thin coat of silicon grease to prevent corrosion.

We will return repaired products at our expense, but if we determine there is no defect, or that the defect resulted from causes not within the scope of our warranty, then you must bear the cost of returning the product.

OEMTOOLS® does not provide warranty for products labeled other than OEM® or OEMTOOLS®. OEMTOOLS® will not provide any warranty for products subjected to abnormal use. Abnormal use includes (but is not limited to) abuse, accident, alteration, neglect, and unauthorized or unreasonable use or repairs. This warranty does not cover bits, blades, files, batteries, orcalibration. We recommend that you maintain your tools and sharpen or replace blades, bits, files, and batteries as necessary.
