Terminology maintenance/care

The beam is machined from 304 stainless steel which needs little maintenance, however care must be taken to avoid scratches, dents, and dust that may impact the square’s accuracy.

The stock is polished brass and timber which can tarnish over time. This aging is normal and does not impact the function of the square, however regular application of furniture wax may slow this process if a bright polish is desired.

Care should be taken to ensure that the square does not experience any sudden shock, impact, or severe changes in temperature. Although the square can be recalibrated, damage cannot be un-done.

Calibrating / Checking

The square can be checked for squareness against itself, or against another reference square. Sufficient squareness for most applications can be achieved by using feeler gauges between the square and a reference, or by comparing a mark stricken along the square perpendicular to a flat reference with an identical mark stricken with the square reversed on the same reference.

If the square is too acute (less than 90 degrees), loosen the obtuse adjuster screw slightly and tighten the acute adjuster screw until snug. Repeat until square.

If the square is too obtuse (greater than 90 degrees), loosen the acute adjuster screw slightly and tighten the obtuse adjuster screw until snug. Repeat until square.

This starts with the design: We use stainless steel for the beam as it is a more resilient material than Brass or Aluminium. The beam is a key wear surface as a hardened steel marking knife will rub along the surface and could damage a softer material. Likewise the Stock has been designed to be a single metal piece so that the inside and outside edges are always parallel.

The inclusion of the wood feature is completely surrounded by brass to maintain structural integrity. Older designs with a wooden stock and brass plates are simpler to produce but not as accurate. Note that all machinist squares are fully metal in the stock and beam.

The production of tools is the second area of focus at Ironbark. We combine leading edge technology from laser cutting and waterjet processes with old world hand craftsmanship.

We are able to obtain materials that are near tolerance and then manually bring the raw materials to the required flatness, parallelism and finish to meet the demands of our customers. All products are hand finished, hand assembled and hand tested.
