checks are necessary to ensure that the risk of ignition is minimized. To
repair the cooling system, the following precautions must be observed before
working on the appliance.
DEFINITION OF WORK PROCEDURE
Work is carried out in a controlled manner to minimize risk presence of
flammable gas or vapor during the execution of the work.
WORKPLACE
All qualified staff and others working in the local area are informed of the
nature of the work being carried out. Working in confined spaces should be
avoided. The area around the workplace must be separated. Ensure that
conditions within the area have been made safe by checking for flammable
material.
CHECK FOR THE PRESENCE OF REFRIGERANT
The area is checked with a suitable refrigerant detector before and during the
work to ensure that the qualified technician is aware that there is an
ignition hazard. Ensure that the leak detection equipment used is suitable for
use with flammable refrigerants, i.e., non-sparking, adequately sealed or
intrinsically safe.
FIRE EXTINGUISHER PRESENT
If work is to be carried out on the refrigeration equipment or other related
parts, suitable firefighting equipment must be available. Have a dry powder or
CO2 extinguisher.
IGNITION SOURCES
No person carrying out work in connection with a refrigeration system which
involves the exposure of any piping containing or containing a flammable
refrigerant shall use sources of ignition in such a manner as to result in a
fire or explosion hazard. All possible sources of ignition, including
cigarette smoking, must be kept well away from the site of installation,
repair, removal and disposal, during which flammable refrigerant may be
released into the surrounding area. Before working, the area around the
equipment should be checked to make sure there are no flammable or ignition
hazards. There must be a “No smoking” sign in the area.
WELL VENTILATED AREA
Make sure the area is open or adequately ventilated before operating the

during the work period. The vent should safely disperse any released
refrigerant and preferably exhaust it externally to the atmosphere.
CHECKING EQUIPMENT CONTAINING REFRIGERANT
If electrical components are changed, they must be fit for purpose and meet
the manufacturer’s specifications. Also, the manufacturer’s maintenance and
care instructions must always be followed. If in doubt consult the
manufacturer’s technical department for assistance.
The following controls apply to installations using flammable refrigerants:
- The appliance must be stored in a well-ventilated area where the size of the room corresponds to the area of the room as determined for operation
- Ventilation machines and outlets are functioning adequately and are not obstructed.
- If an indirect refrigerant circuit is used, the secondary circuit is checked for the presence of refrigerant.
- Marking on the equipment must be visible and legible. Signs that are illegible must be corrected.
- The cooling pipe or components are installed in a location where they are unlikely to be exposed to any substance that can corrode components containing the refrigerant, unless the components are made of materials that are inherently corrosion resistant or are properly protected from to corrode.
CHECK OF ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES
Repair and maintenance of electrical components includes initial safety checks
and component inspection procedures. If there is a fault which could
compromise safety then no electrical supply shall be connected to the circuit
until it has been satisfactorily dealt with. If the error cannot be corrected
immediately, but it is necessary to continue operation, an appropriate
temporary solution must be used. This should be reported to the owner of the
equipment so that all parties are informed.
Initial security checks include:
- Discharging capacitors: this must be done in a safe manner to avoid the possibility of ignition.
