Download Varjo Base

Varjo Base is the software used to run your headset on a Windows computer. You also need a Varjo Account to set up your headset and controllers.

  1. Go to account.varjo.com and create a Varjo Account.
  2. Download Varjo Base.
  3. Log into Varjo Base with your Varjo Account.
  4. Select your headset model in Varjo Base and follow the setup instructions.

Connect the headset and charge the controllers

Varjo headsets are compatible with Windows computers. For system requirements, see varjo.com/start/system.

  1. Connect power to the headset adapter using the charging cable. Use the 60W port in the 3-port charger.
  2. Make sure the charging cable locks into place properly.
  3. Connect the headset adapter to the back of your computer. The status indicator light in the headset adapter turns green.
  4. Connect the headset’s data cable to the headset adapter. Make sure the cable locks into place properly.
  5. Connect the headset’s display cable to the graphics card of the computer.
  6. Power on the headset.
  7. We recommend charging the controllers before use. Connect the controllers to the 7.5W ports in the 3-port charger.

Put on your headset

Seeing content in the highest visual quality requires that the headset is precisely positioned over your eyes. Optimal positioning is different for every individual as it depends on the shape of your head and eyes.

  1. Before you put on the headset, loosen both the back and top adjustments. 1. Quick release button

  2. Tighten the headband with the back adjustment wheel.

  3. Adjust the top adjustment to hold the headset in place. The headset is correctly adjusted when it sits comfortably on your head and the image inside the headset is sharp.

  4. Adjust the space between your eyes and the lenses with the field-of-view adjustment button. Keep the button pressed and move the device body closer or further away for optimal viewing distance.

Put on your controllers

Hold the controller in your hand so that you can reach all buttons comfortably with your fingers. Tighten the hand strap by pulling the tightening loop. You can detach the hand strap from the controller. Push the hand strap release button and pull the lower part of the hand strap away. Release the upper part of the hand strap, for example with the help of a paper clip.

Clean the headset and controllers

Clean the headset and the controllers regularly, especially when sharing them with others. Unplug the headset from its power source and power off the controllers before cleaning.
Headset lenses and mixed reality camera lenses:

  • To avoid scratching the lenses, use an air duster to blow off any dust.
  • Clean the lenses gently with optical lens wipes or a microfiber lens cloth.

Headset and controller body, headset front plate, light blocker, face cushion, nose area, and areas surrounding the lenses:

  • Clean with non-abrasive antibacterial wipes.

Do not use any of the following for cleaning the headset, controllers, and other accessories:

  • Water, soap, aerosols
  • Cleaning solvents, liquid cleansers, chemical cleansers
  • Harsh chemicals, alcohol

Please read through and familiarize yourself with these instructions before you start to use the headset.
Intended use
The headset is intended for indoor use and only for persons aged 13 and older. If you do not use the headset as intended, it may cause the headset to malfunction.
High-risk use
Varjo software and/or products are not designed, engineered, or certified for control of any equipment or system, including aviation, industrial, commercial, military, or medical equipment or systems, in a way where such use or a malfunction of the software or products could with a meaningful probability lead to death or serious bodily injury of any person or animal, or to severe physical or environmental damage (“high-risk use”). VARJO STRONGLY ADVISES AGAINST USING THE SOFTWARE OR PRODUCTS FOR ANY HIGH-RISK USE. If you still decide to use the software and/or products for high-risk use, you do so at your own risk, assume all liability, and agree to take all reasonable precautions to minimize any risk and damage resulting from such high-risk use and/or failure of software and/or products in such high-risk use.
Product type label
The model name and serial number of the headset are printed on the type label located on the back support of the headband.
The serial number of the controller can be found at the back of the device.
Health and safety warnings
To reduce the risk of personal injury, discomfort, or property damage, please ensure that all users of the headset carefully read the warnings below before using the headset.
Before using the headset
A comfortable mixed or virtual reality experience requires an unimpaired sense of motion and balance. Do not use the headset if you are sick, tired, sleepy, under the influence of alcohol or drugs, hungover, experiencing digestive problems, under emotional stress or anxiety, suffering from cold, flu, migraines, or headaches, or are not generally feeling well, as it may worsen your condition. Consult a doctor before using the headset if you have any conditions that impair your vision or mobility, are pregnant or elderly, have a heart or other serious medical condition, or suffer from seizures, migraines, or psychiatric conditions.
Safe environment
Varjo headsets produce an immersive mixed or virtual reality experience that may distract you and make it hard to see your actual surroundings.

  • Before using the headset, clear the area of obstacles and hazards, people, furniture, and any other items that may prevent you from moving freely. Also, check that you have enough space above and around you so that you can extend your arms while using the headset.
  • Remember that any virtual objects that you see do not exist in the real environment, and their size and location are not real. Do not attempt to sit or stand on virtual objects or use them for support. Be aware of any real-world objects that might be located behind virtual objects.
  • Never use the headset in situations that require attention, such as while walking, bicycling, or driving. Do not use the headset while in a moving vehicle.
  • Remember that while you are using the headset, you may be unaware of people entering the area.
  • Do not use the headset near stairs, balconies, windows, open doorways, or near any other places where you can fall from.
  • Do not use the headset near walls, low ceilings, ceiling fans, light fixtures, open flames, heat sources, breakable items, or any other items that you can collide with or knock down.
  • Keep in mind the location of the cables and power cords so that you do not walk on, trip over, or pull on them while using the headset. Do not jerk, knot, or bend the cables or cords.
  • Do not handle sharp or otherwise dangerous objects while using the headset.

Discomfort
When using the headset, some people may experience dry eyes, eye strain, eye or muscle twitching, involuntary movements, altered, blurred or double vision, or other visual abnormalities, dizziness, light headedness, disorientation, discomfort or pain in the head or eyes, headaches, impaired balance, impaired hand-eye coordination, excessive sweating, increased saliva- tion, nausea, fatigue, loss of awareness, or seizures and other symptoms of motion sickness.
When you start to use the headset, keep your first sessions short and take regular breaks. If you feel discomfort, stop using the headset and continue only after the symptoms have ended. Do not drive, operate machinery, or engage in other visually or physically demanding activities until you have fully recovered from any symptoms. Consider consulting a doctor if you are not able to see virtual objects clearly and comfortably.
Overuse
Take regular breaks when using the headset. Prolonged use may impact your hand-eye coordination or balance and may cause other negative effects.
Repetitive stress injuries
Use the headset and the controllers in a comfortable position. Do not use excessive force when gripping the headset and the controllers. Do not use excessive force when pressing the headset and the controller buttons. If you experience tingling, numbness, burning, stiffness, throbbing, or other discomfort, stop using the headset and rest until you have fully recovered from any symptoms. If you continue to experience these symptoms, consult a doctor.
Interference with medical devices
The headset may emit radio waves, which can affect the operation of nearby electronics, including cardiac pacemakers, hearing aids, and defibrillators. If you use a pacemaker or other implanted medical device, do not use the headset without first consulting a doctor or the manufacturer of your medical device. Maintain a safe distance between the headset and your medical devices and stop using the headset if you observe any interference with your medical device.
Hearing loss
Excessive exposure to loud sounds can cause hearing damage. When using the integrated speakers or external headphones with the headset, start with the volume at a low level and increase the volume slowly if needed. Do not turn up the volume too high.
Seizures
Some people may experience severe dizziness, fainting, epileptic seizures, or blackouts triggered by light flashes, patterns, or exposure to infrared light sources of an eye tracker even though they have no history of these conditions. If you experience any of these symptoms, stop using the headset and consult a doctor. If you have a previous history with these symptoms, consult a doctor before using the headset. To reduce the likelihood of a seizure, do not use the headset if you are tired.
No eye protection
Varjo headsets do not provide eye protection against impact, debris, chemicals, UV light, other harmful lights, particles, projectiles, or other physical hazards.
Electrical shock
Do not try to disassemble, open, service, or modify the headset, controller, controller battery, or any of the accessories or the power supply unit, as this can lead to electrical shock or other hazards and may damage the headset or the accessories or the power supply unit. For PLUGGABLE EQUIPMENT, the socket-outlet shall be installed near the equipment and shall be easily accessible. Use the headset only with USB Type-C power supply unit capable of delivering 60 W (20 V and 3 A) and the headset adapter included in the sales box. Use the controllers with the USB-C charging cables included in the sales box. Use the controllers with the Varjo 3-port charger or a power supply unit capable of delivering 6 W (5 V and 1.2 A).
CLASS 1 LASER PRODUCT
Damaged or broken device
Do not use the headset or accessories if any part is broken or damaged, the provided cables are torn, or any wires are exposed. Do not try to repair any part of the headset or accessories yourself. Repairs should be made only by an authorized service facility or Varjo.
Contagious conditions
To avoid the risk of transferring contagious conditions from one person to another, do not share the headset with persons with infections or diseases, particularly of the eyes, skin, or scalp.
Skin irritation
Stop using the headset if you experience swelling, itchiness, or other irritation. If the symptoms persist, consult a doctor.
Battery safety information
The controller has an internal, non-removable, rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Do not attempt to remove the battery, as you may damage the controller.

  • Do not dismantle, open or shred secondary cells or batteries.
  • Keep batteries out of the reach of children.
  • Battery usage by children should be supervised. Especially keep small batteries out of reach of small children.
  • Seek medical advice immediately if a cell or a battery has been swallowed.
  • Do not expose cells or batteries to heat or fire. Avoid storage in direct sunlight.
  • Do not subject cells or batteries to mechanical shock.
  • In the event of a cell or battery leaking, do not allow the liquid to come in contact with the skin or eyes. If contact has been made, wash the affected area with copious amounts of water and seek medical advice.
  • Secondary cells and batteries need to be charged before use. Always use the correct charger and refer to the manufacturer’s instructions or equipment manual for proper charging instructions.
  • Do not leave a battery on prolonged charge when not in use.
  • Do not wait for the battery to be entirely empty before recharging.
  • Do not leave your controller plugged in after it has been fully charged.
  • Retain the original product literature for future reference.

Safety information

To prevent injury to yourself or others or damage to the headset, read this safety information before using the headset.
Wearing the headset
When you put on the headset for the first time, follow the instructions on how to position the headset correctly on your head. The headset is correctly adjusted when it sits comfortably on your head and the image inside the headset is sharp. There should be no pain or pressure on your head, and the cushion should feel comfortable on your face.
When you put on the headset, it will adjust the lenses automatically based on your interpupillary distance. This setting is on by default. We recommend that you keep the setting on. Switch off the setting if the automatic adjustment does not work for you, for example, due to eyeglasses or any conditions that impair your vision. If you switch off the automatic adjustment, you may feel discomfort when using the headset.
Reflective surfaces
Please be aware that reflective surfaces may interfere with positional tracking.
Care and maintenance
Handle the headset and the accessories with care and keep them in a clean and dust-free place.
Sunlight and external light sources
Do not leave the headset or accessories in direct sunlight or strong ultraviolet light. Exposure to direct sunlight can damage the optics and display. Do not shine a laser or an external light source through the lenses.
Damage

  • Do not drop or bend the headset or knock it against other objects, as this may affect the calibration of the camera lenses.
  • Do not scratch the camera lenses.
  • Lift the headset by holding the headset body or the headband.
  • Do not lift the headset by holding the cushions or cables.
  • Do not step on the cables.
  • Do not drop any of the accessories.
  • To avoid damaging the controller, do not drop it, hit other things with it, or collide with hard surfaces.
  • Although the controllers may be used while charging, avoid doing so while standing up to prevent accidents.

Damage requiring service
Use only qualified personnel to service the headset and the accessories. Contact an authorized service facility if:

  • The headset or the accessories have been exposed to liquid or dropped.
  • The headset or the accessories have been subjected to impact or are damaged.
  • The headset or the accessories overheat.
  • The headset or the accessories do not operate normally when you follow the operating instructions.

Device temperature
It is normal for the headset to feel warm to the touch while in use. The front-facing cameras and the air ventilation surfaces in particular may get hot. Prolonged skin contact with a headset that is hot to the touch may cause skin discomfort or redness, or low temperature burns. If your headset feels hot to the touch or is uncomfortably warm, stop using it and allow the headset to cool down.
Accessories
Do not use the headset with any unauthorized or incompatible accessories or software. Using unauthorized accessories or software may cause performance issues or result in injury or damage. Check varjo.com/start for a list of compatible accessories or software.

Operating and storage environment

Placement
Use the headset only in adequately ventilated areas.

  • Do not cover the headset or the controllers.
  • Do not cover the air vents on top of the headset.
  • Do not place the headset near objects that could scratch the lenses.
  • Do not expose the headset or the accessories to open flames or lit smoking products.
  • Do not place the headset or the accessories near heat sources, hot areas, or extreme temperatures.
  • Do not use the headset or the accessories near water or other liquids.
  • Do not use the headset or the accessories after a dramatic change in temperature. When you move the headset or the accessories between environments with very different temperatures and/or humidity ranges, condensation may form on or inside the headset or any of the accessories. Allow enough time for the moisture to evaporate before using the headset or the accessories.

NOTE: When you move the headset and the accessories from low-temperature conditions into a warmer environment or vice versa, allow the headset and the accessories to acclimate to room temperature before you power them on. Use the headset and the accessories at temperatures between 10°C to 27°C (50° to 80°F). It is safe to use the headset and the accessories at a maximum temperature of 35°C (95°F). Store the headset and the accessories in their sales box at temperatures between 0°C to 40°C (32°F to 104°F) to minimize unintentional damage.

European RF Exposure Information
Your device is a radio transmitter and receiver. It is designed not to exceed the limits for exposure to radio waves recommended by international guidelines. These guidelines were developed by the independent scientific organization ICNIRP and include safety margins designed to assure the protection of all persons, regardless of age and health. The guidelines use a unit of measurement known as the Specific Absorption Rate, or SAR.
The transmitter output value is less than the low power exclusion level specified in EN 62479:2010.
Recycling

The crossed-out wheelie bin symbol on your headset, accessories, battery, reading materials, or packaging reminds you to take all electrical and electronic products, batteries, and used packaging materials to separate collection at the end of their working life. Do not dispose of these products as unsorted municipal waste; take them for recycling. For info on your nearest recycling point, check with your local waste authority.
