Product Information

The BARDIC Sentinel automatic self-testing system is a device designed to enable an emergency luminaire to perform an automatic test and indicate the result. It can only be fitted to BARDIC branded Premium fittings. The Sentinel Unit automatically tests the fitting it is installed in every 91-93 days, with the criterion being that the light must remain illuminated for 90 minutes. The system includes a Sentinel Module and a Control Board (PCB), both of which are polarized to prevent incorrect assembly. The system also includes a light sensor for fluorescent models.

Product Usage Instructions

  1. Installation :
    • Ensure that the BARDIC Sentinel module’s locating tabs line up correctly with the Control board when installing the Sentinel Module and the Control board PCB.
    • For fluorescent luminaire models, insert the light sensor into the rubber grommet and locate the grommet complete with light sensor into the opening provided in the body of the luminaire, directly under the emergency fluorescent tube. Plug the white 2-pin socket into the 2-pin polarized plug on the inverter PCB.
    • Connect the battery.
    • Connect the AC supply and leave for 16 hours to fully recharge the battery. Complete the assembly of the emergency light fitting.
    • Attach the BARDIC Sentinel label to the luminaire and adjacent to the product label, indicating that the emergency fitting is fitted with the BARDIC Sentinel unit in a position visible from the ground.
  2. Commissioning:
    • The first long-duration test after power is applied to the Sentinel Unit or after it is reset is a Commissioning Test, which lasts 120 minutes.
    • If the commissioning test fails, the yellow indicator will blink continuously (0.5s on, 0.5s off) and another commissioning test will be scheduled to run in the next 16 hours.
    • The commissioning test will continue to run every 16 hours until a successful test has been recorded.
    • Note: Ensure that there are no power interruptions to the site 24 hours before the commissioning test to allow the fitting to be fully charged.
  3. Operation Requesting Tests:
    • A quick test: Press and release the test switch 3 times in 5 seconds to initiate a quick test. This is a 5-second test used during installation to check the proper installation of the battery and lamp.
    • A 90-minute / Standard test: Push the test button 2 times within 5 seconds to initiate a 90-minute test. The luminaire will switch to battery mode of operation, the Yellow and Red LED will turn off, and the test will commence, provided there has been no recent power failure and the battery is fully charged.

Introduction

The BARDIC Sentinel automatic self-testing system is designed to enable an emergency luminaire to perform an automatic test and to indicate the result of the test. It can only be fitted to BARDIC branded Premium fittings. Every 91-93 days, the Sentinel Unit will automatically test the fitting it is installed in, the criterion being that the light must remain illuminated for 90 minutes.

Installation

Install BARDIC Sentinel Self-Testing Units in the following order:

  1. Disconnect the AC supply and remove the battery leads from the battery terminals. Remove the jumper fitted to pins 4 and 5 for the 8-pin header on the main Control Board (PCB). Use the spare BARDIC Sentinel logo label to attach the removed jumper to the body of the emergency fitting. This action enables the replacement of the jumper into the main Control Board (PCB) should the Sentinel module be removed. To replace the jumper, remove the Sentinel module and simply insert it to pins 4 & 5 on the 8-pin header, this will ensure the correct functionality of luminaire.

  2. Insert the BARDIC Sentinel PCB into the 8-pin header provided on the main Control Circuit Board (PCB). The BARDIC Sentinel Module and the Control board PCB are polarised to prevent incorrect assembly and ensure that the BARDIC Sentinel module’s locating tabs line up correctly with the Control board.

  3. Installing the light sensor (fluorescent models only, LED products do not require a light sensor). Fluorescent Luminaire models:
Insert the light sensor into the rubber grommet and locate the grommet complete with the light sensor into the opening provided in the body of the luminaire and directly under the emergency fluorescent tube. This ensures that the photocell lines up with a small hole on the luminaire cover plate and directly under the emergency fluorescent tube. Plug the white 2-pin socket into the 2-pin polarised plug on the inverter PCB.

  4. Connect the battery

  5. Connect the AC supply and leave for 16 hours to fully recharge the battery. Complete the assembly of the emergency light fitting.

  6. Attach the BARDIC Sentinel label to the luminaire and adjacent to the product label, to indicate that the emergency fitting is fitted with the BARDIC Sentinel unit, in a position that can be seen from the ground.

Commissioning

  • The first long-duration test conducted after power is applied to the Sentinel Unit or after it is reset is a Commissioning Test. The Commissioning Test lasts 120 minutes. Once the BARDIC emergency fitting passes the Commissioning Test, all subsequent tests are Standard Tests. The Standard Test lasts 90 minutes.
  • If the commissioning test fails, the yellow indicator will blink continuously (0.5s on, 0.5s off) and the Sentinel program will automatically schedule another commission test to run in the next 16 hours.
  • The commissioning test will continue to run every 16 hours until a successful test has been recorded.

NOTE: Ensure that there are no power interruptions to the site 24 hours before the commissioning test to allow the fitting to allow the fitting to be fully charged.

Operation

Requesting tests
Two types of tests can be manually requested.

A quick test:

  • A quick test is a 5-second test usually used during installation to check that the battery, lamp, etc are properly installed. It runs the fitting in emergency mode for 5 seconds.
  • To initiate a quick test. Press and release the test switch 3 times in 5 seconds.

A 90-minute / Standard test

  • To initiate a 90-minute test, push the test button 2 times within 5 seconds. Provided there has been no recent power failure and that the battery is fully charged, the luminaire will switch to the battery mode of operation, the Yellow and Red LED will turn off, and the test will commence.
  • Should there have been a recent power failure, or the battery is not fully charged, then the BARDIC Sentinel Self-Testing unit will acknowledge the command by initiating the Yellow LED to flash rapidly for 5 seconds. This rapid flash indicates that the BARDIC Sentinel Self-Testing Unit has understood the command but cannot perform a test at this time, as the battery is not fully charged. Once the BARDIC Sentinel Self
  • Testing Unit has determined that the battery is fully charged, it will conduct the test automatically and display the result on completion.

Table Showing Sentinel LED Indicator States

Yellow LED Indicator Description
Red LED and Yellow LED ON The normal mode of operation

The battery was on charge and the luminaire passed its last test

Red LED and Yellow LED OFF| Emergency Luminaire on Test. Mains Power OFF
Red LED Permanently ON, Yellow LED flashing 4secs ON, 1sec OFF| Within the last 5 days, the emergency luminaire passed its test.
Red LED Permanently ON, Yellow LED flashing continuously| The emergency luminaire failed its last test and requires attention.
Red LED Permanently ON, Yellow LED flashing continuously for 5 seconds| The Manual Test command is acknowledged, and the test will start immediately battery is fully charged.
The Red LED, when illuminated indicates that the battery is charging.

The Red LED when OFF, indicates that the AC supply is OFF, or the emergency light is running a sentinel test.

The Yellow LED indicates that the Sentinel feature has been activated and the LED is normally illuminated except during periods of test and mains failure.

Synchronizing Sentinel Test Time
When it is desirable to have all fittings connected to the same circuit run their standard tests concurrently. Simply toggle your circuit breaker off and on twice in 5 seconds. This action will send a standard test request to all the applicable fittings. However, if the fitting has not yet been commissioned the requested test will run for a minimum of 120 minutes. after which all passed fittings will run their subsequent standard tests concurrently.
