Socket Types

  1. Master
Intended for use as the first socket outlet on a direct exchange line as the primary Network Terminal Point.

  2. Secondary/Slave
Used in installations as extension sockets when connected on the same tine in parallel with a master socket. Both Master and Secondary/slave sockets available with screw or IDC termination.

Wiring Instructions

Replacing an existing accessory

  1. Unscrew the accessory from the wall/mounting box.
  2. Note the cable connections.
  3. Disconnect the wires.

New installation

  1. Install mounting box (metal or moulded) for either flush or surface mounting, ensuring appropriate size of product (Mounting box to be purchased separately).
  2. Select the most suitable entry point of the mounting box (knock-out) and route the cables through. If a metal box is used, a cable grommet should be fitted to the entry point.

Connection (See diagram)

  1. Line up the new socket to mounting box and take note of where each terminal is located.
  2. Carefully arrange the cable(s) so as to lie along the edges of the product keeping the central area clear.
  3. Carefully remove 50mm of the telephone cable outer sheath to expose the inner insulated conductors.
  4. To assist with the correct installation of this product please consult the wiring diagram. Terminals 1 and 6 are frequently unused, 2 pair (4 wires) cable may be used in these installations.
  5. Fit wire to terminals, please see connection notes.
  6. Carefully position the accessory into the mounting box, ensuring that no wires have sharp bends or are trapped between the plate and the wall and secure with screws (do not over tighten) then insert screw covers (optional).

Additional Advice for Decorative Products

Fixing method varies depending on which product range is supplied. Always ensure wall surface is reasonably flat and smooth, with no bumps or projections. Metal frontplates WITH screw fixing holes, fix the unit to the back box using two fixing screws supplied. All Decorative products MUST have an earth connection between the frontplate and back box. Frontplates WITHOUT screw fixing holes. These products comprise main unit with integral gasket, and frontplate as separate item. Fix unit to back box using two fixing screws supplied. Clip frontplate onto main assembly, ensuring screwdriver notch is located bottom right hand corner. To remove plate, place medium size flat bladed screwdriver in notch and lever off against gasket.

Safety Warning

Before use please read and carefully use in accordance with these safety wiring instructions. To ensure a satisfactory operation these products should be installed by a competent person. These products should not be installed into the same enclosure containing mains exceeding 50V. Avoid running the telecom within 50mm of mains electrical cable. If in doubt, consult a qualified electrician.

Single Telephone Socket
For both Master and Secondary Slave sockets connect the wires as shown in the diagram below. (Screw type socket shown)
CONNECTION
IOC Type Connection
Using a suitable IDC toot push each lead into the appropriate IDC terminal according to the BT wiring Scheme. Trim off any excess inner conductors protruding from the terminals.

Screw Type Connection
The ends of the individual conductors should have the insulation removed by approx. 8mm. Connect each wire as per the 13T Wiring Scheme. Ensure that only the bare end of the wire enters terminal and that no bare wires are visible. Always tighten the terminal screws securely.

BT Wiring Scheme

Pin| Colour
1| Green with White rings
2| Blue with White rings
3| Orange with White rings
4| White with Orange rings
5| White with Blue rings
6| White with Green rings

Note – An existing installation may use a different wiring colour code system. It is essential that the new product is wired up in the same way as the old one. The simplest way is either to label each conductor with the location of the terminal to which it connects as you release it or to transfer one conductor at a time to the corresponding terminal on the new product. When replacing a two terminal BT NTE5 socket,
A terminal = Pin 5 (White with blue rings(
B terminal = Pin 2 (Blue with white rings(

Double Telephone Socket
For both Master and Secondary Slave sockets connect the wires as shown in the diagram above for each socket. Socket provides two separate outlets from two separate inputs.

Double Output Telephone Socket
To create a double socket – two outputs from one input, a connection is required to be made between similar terminals. Connect your input to one set of terminals. Prepare a suitable length of telephone wire and connect between like terminals – 1 to 1, 2 to 2 etc.

Secondary extension sockets
Although as many secondary/slave sockets can be used as desired, a normal limit of 4 RENS can be used for 1 line. One telephone normally equating to 1 REN. This REN value can normally be found on the device. Additional outlets should be wired in parallel with the existing installation, i.e. terminal 1 on master socket to terminal 1 on slave socket, terminal 2 to terminal 2, etc. Extension sockets may be connected to the master socket by a maximum of 50m of cable. The total length of wiring that may be used including all branches should not exceed 100m.

Care

To maintain the high quality appearance of decorative finish switches and sockets, BO Electrical recommend the use of a soft cloth periodically to clean the front face. When installing a decorative product please ensure that the wall is decorated, finished and free of moisture prior to installa-tion. BG Electrical recommends avoiding using, but not restricted to. these substances from becoming in contact with the decorative metal front-plates when cleaning or decorating:

  • Adhesive tape, including low tack masking tape
  • Solvents
  • White spirit
  • Multi surface cleaners
  • Industrial multipurpose cleaning wipes
  • Wet wipes

Using items like those listed above may cause a degrading effect to the front- plates lacquer/plated finish, although the function will remain unaffected.
