Reference Information

ThinkSystem TruDDR5 and TruDDR4 memory delivers trusted, tested, quality, performance, and reliability throughout the ThinkSystem portfolio. We use the highest quality industry-standard memory components sourced from Tier 1 DRAM suppliers. The only memory that meets these strict requirements is selected for memory in Lenovo servers. It is then compatibility tested and tuned on every

ThinkSystem server to maximize reliability. In addition, Lenovo memory DIMMs for servers have a unique signature programmed into them so your system can verify that TruDDR4 Memory is installed in your system. Since the memory will be authenticated, memory stretch goals are enabled only when TruDDR4 Memory DIMMs are detected. Together with lower power consumption, these new DIMMs can provide the lowest TCO for data centers.

High-Performance Memory

Lenovo offers high-performance and high-capacity memory options in ThinkSystem servers.

  • Persistent Memory
    Lenovo ThinkSystem servers configured with Intel Optane Persistent Memory transforms the memory/storage hierarchy enabling faster insights from data. This breakthrough technology delivers large capacity, high speed, affordable memory with data persistence and advanced encryption capabilities. These modules significantly increase the capacity of available system memory, keeping more hot data closer to the CPU, and enabling greater operational efficiency by processing larger data sets with more user instances.

  • 3DS RDIMMs
    To meet the ever increasing demand for higher density server memory modules, Lenovo offers 3DS (3 Dimensional Stacked) DDR4 RDIMMs which apply TSV (Through Silicon Via) technology from our partnership with a leading Tier 1 DRAM supplier. The new TSV 3DS stack technology enables higher density DRAM stack packages with higher operational frequency and reduced power consumption. The RDIMM configuration along with 3DS TSV DRAM packages exhibits performance benefits and lower power consumption over alternative high density solutions to ultimately provide the lowest TCO for data centers.

9×4 RDIMMs (also known as Optimized or EC4 RDIMMs) are a new lower-cost DDR5 memory option supported in ThinkSystem V3 servers. 9×4 DIMMs offer the same performance as standard RDIMMs (known as 10×4 or EC8 modules), however they support lower fault-tolerance characteristics. Standard RDIMMs and 3DS RDIMMs support two 40-bit subchannels (that is, a total of 80 bits), whereas 9×4 RDIMMs support two 36-bit subchannels (a total of 72 bits). The extra bits in the subchannels allow standard RDIMMs and 3DS RDIMMs to support Single Device Data Correction (SDDC), however 9×4 RDIMMs do not support SDDC. Note, however, that all DDR5 DIMMs, including 9×4 RDIMMs, support Bounded Fault correction, which enables the server to correct most common types of DRAM failures.

Server Support

Configurations notes:
Some 2666 MHz memory is only supported with Gen 1 Xeon Scalable processors (codenamed “Skylake”), whereas other 2666 MHz memory is only supported with Gen 2 Xeon Scalable processors (codenamed “Cascade Lake”). These are indicated with the (1) and (2) footnotes in the table, respectively.

  • 2933 MHz memory is not supported by Intel Xeon SP Gen 1 processors
  • The support of 32GB UDIMMs on ST50, ST250, SR150 and SR250 requires a Intel Xeon E Series processor and UEFI firmware ISE114H or later
  • 2666 MHz Persistent Memory is only supported by Intel Xeon SP Gen 2 processors
  • 3200 MHz Persistent Memory is only supported by Intel Xeon SP Gen 3 processors
  • Some servers support mixing memory speeds; all memory will operate at the lowest speed

Note: Lenovo branded memory shipped as option part numbers, as FRU service parts, or installed in the factory as part of a CTO order, may contain memory parts that exceed the technical specification of what is printed on the DIMM label or is stated in the DIMM ordering information. Your server’s system UEFI firmware may need to be updated to support such DIMMs. See Lenovo Support Tip HT509191 for additional information.

Is the memory module attached or built-in?

The modules are attached to a printed circuit board, with several RAM chips on a single circuit board, which is connected to the motherboard.

Are all memory modules universal?

Since each type of memory has different notch locations (which are important for installation), different memory technologies aren’t compatible with each other. Motherboards are generally only able to support one type of memory technology.

What is the purpose of memory modules?

In computing, a memory module or RAM (random-access memory) stick is a printed circuit board on which memory integrated circuits are mounted. Memory modules permit easy installation and replacement in electronic systems, especially computers such as personal computers, workstations, and servers.

Do memory modules store data permanently?

Because of its volatility, RAM can’t store permanent data. RAM can be compared to a person’s short-term memory and a hard disk drive to a person’s long-term memory. Short-term memory is focused on immediate work, but it can only keep a limited number of facts in view at any one time.

Where are memory modules located?

The computer has 2 memory module compartments. The primary memory module compartment is located under the keyboard. The expansion memory module compartment is located at the bottom of the computer.

Where will you insert the memory module?

The RAM modules are installed on memory slots which are usually located to the right of the CPU socket. Some motherboards have memory slots on both sides of the CPU socket, but those are mostly in the case of high-end workstation boards.

What is the capacity of the memory module?

Because there are eight bits per byte, a memory module that uses eight chips can store the number of megabytes specified by the megabit size of the chip. For example, a memory module that uses eight 128-Mbit chips is a 128 MB memory module. Recent memory modules may use 16-, 64-, 128-, 256-, or 512-Mbit chips.

Can you use different memory modules?

Theoretically, you can mix different RAM brands in your computer system, but you may encounter some problems. Sometimes mixing different RAM brands can lead to a drop in performance, but if you consider your options carefully, you may be able to avoid issues.

How memory modules are composed?

Similar to a microprocessor, a memory chip is an integrated circuit (IC) made of millions of transistors and capacitors. In the most common form of computer memory, dynamic random access memory (DRAM), a transistor, and a capacitor are paired to create a memory cell, which represents a single bit of data.

How do you handle memory modules?

Always hold the modules by the sides; never touch the components on the modules or the golden contact plates. Furthermore, you should never stack the memory modules. This can damage them and render them unusable.

How many pins are there in the memory module?

They contain 184 pins on the bottom of the circuit board. There is one notch on the bottom of the board and it must be aligned properly in order for them to be inserted. These memory modules are primarily used in newer computers and can be inserted one at a time unlike the SIMMs, which have to be inserted in pairs.

What are the features of the memory module?

Memory modules are computer chips used to add memory to a computer. There are two basic distinctions of memory. One is volatile memory where the data is lost as soon as power is removed, and one is non-volatile which can store the data without power.
