Koala Hugs Plus
Product Information and Usage Instructions
Product Information
Koala Hugs Plus is a Class 1 Medical Device that provides support and comfort during pregnancy, nursing, tummy time and sitting. It is designed to surround the bump, reduce back discomfort and improve circulation. The pillow is made of soft and cosy material that is gentle to the skin.
Usage Instructions
Sleep During Pregnancy
The correct sleep position throughout pregnancy is to lie on your left side with your knees slightly bent. Use one end of the pillow to rest your head and place the other end between your knees. Place the extra support cushion behind your back to prevent you from rolling over during the night.
Back Support Whilst Sitting
While sitting, open your legs slightly and place Koala Hugs Plus behind you, so it wraps around your body, proving support to your lower back. As a neck support, the extra support cushion should be placed between your neck and the bottom of your head.
Helps with Leg Swelling
To reduce leg swelling, lie down in a comfortable position and place Koala Hugs under your feet. This will elevate your legs, improving circulation and reducing any swelling.
As a Nursing Pillow
Wrap Koala Hugs around your waist, resting your little baby on top of it whilst you feed them. The nursing pillow is also beneficial to the baby, helping to prevent flat head syndrome (Positional Plagiocephaly).
Helps with Tummy Time
To encourage crawling, place the pillow under the baby’s tummy, so that their legs are touching the ground. Move the pillow forward, supporting the baby so that they begin to become familiar with the crawling position. You can add an incentive, such as a toy, that they will want to reach for.
Introducing you to Koala Hugs Plus
Koala Hugs Plus is the new multifunctional pillow that provides full support to both mother and baby: throughout pregnancy, it will aid your sleep allowing you to rest better, and relieving back pain (an inevitable part of pregnancy). Once the baby is born it will become your nursing pillow, and can also be used as a support for tummy time as well as an aid to encourage crawling. Koala Hugs Plus is hypoallergenic, has a removable cover, and is machine washable. It is designed to adapt gently to different body shapes, to ensure maximum comfort for all mothers.
Instructions for use
SLEEP DURING PREGNANCY
Koala Hugs Plus is designed to be, above all, a perfect pillow to aid sleep during pregnancy. We know that a future mum, no matter how tired she may be, often struggles to fall asleep or to find a comfortable position that allows her sleep without any interruption. As your bump grows, back pain also arrives. Koala Hugs Plus helps you to maintain the correct posture to support the weight and pressure of your bump, targeting and relieving back discomfort as you rest. The extra support cushion helps you to maintain a side sleeping position, as it prevents you from rolling over to your back while sleeping. It is, in fact, better to avoid sleeping in on your back (supine position) given the weight of the bump on the spine can cause back pain.
How to use Koala Hugs Plus when sleeping?
The correct sleep position throughout pregnancy is to lie on your left side with your knees slightly bent. Use one end of the pillow to rest your head and place the other end between your knees. This way, Koala Hugs Plus will surround your bump, providing support. Place the extra support cushion behind your back to prevent you from rolling over during the night.
Why do we advise sleeping on your left side and not your right side?
Lying on your left side facilitates blood flow through a main vein (vena cava), whereas, lying on your right side obstructs flow and circulation. The vena cava is the largest blood vessel in our body and becomes particularly important during pregnancy: when it is responsible for transporting oxygen and nutrients to the foetus.
Why is it important to place the pregnancy pillow between your knees?
Lying with your knees bent can put pressure on the sciatic nerve and causes the body to move forward out of alignment. Placing the pillow between your knees, helps to position the upper leg correctly to maintain good hip alignment, as well as giving ample breathing space to your bump.
AS A BACK SUPPORT WHILST SITTING
A pregnancy bump is wonderful, but as it grows… it weighs! And back discomfort can become increasingly more intense. Koala Hugs Plus is an excellent lower back and neck support, ideal for providing support whilst sitting, alleviating back discomfort, and helping to combat pain.
How to use Koala Hugs Plus whilst sitting?
While sitting, open your legs slightly and place Koala Hugs Plus behind you, so it wraps around your body, proving support to your lower back. As a neck support, the extra support cushion should be placed between your neck and the bottom of your head. In this position, Koala Hugs Plus allows you to shift the weight of your bump forwards without putting pressure on your spine. .
HELPS WITH LEG SWELLING
How many mums suffer from swollen legs during the last few weeks of pregnancy? If you find you are one of them, you just need to lie down in a comfortable position and place Koala Hugs under your feet. This will elevate your legs, improving circulation and consequently, reduce any swelling.
AS A NURSING PILLOW
Feeding your baby requires a considerable amount of physical effort from the mother’s arms, shoulders and back, this is why we advise using it right rom the start. The nursing pillow is also beneficial to the baby, helping to prevent flat head syndrome (Positional Plagiocephaly): their head will be resting on a soft and cosy pillow instead of against the hardness of their mother’s arm.
How to use the pillow for feeding your baby?
Wrap \\\ around your waist, resting your little baby on top of it whilst you feed them: by doing this, you won’t have to exert yourself to support the baby’s weight.
HELPS WITH TUMMY TIME
Once they are two months old, your baby should begin having some playtime, under adult supervision, whilst lying down on their stomach to promote motor development. This activity, which is called ‘Tummy Time’, should be practiced daily. Starting from when the baby is 4 months old, Koala Hugs can also be used for Tummy Time! Place the baby’s arms on the pillow and try to capture their attention so that they try to lift their head. By doing so, you will be helping your baby to strengthen and develop their neck and back muscles and joints. This activity also helps prevent flat head syndrome (positional plagiocephaly). We recommend Tummy Time with Koala Hugs from when your baby is four months old and always under adult supervision.
The ideal support for encouraging crawling
Babies generally start crawling at around 8 to 10 months, an important stage in their physical and cognitive development. Babies can be encouraged to crawl with the help of Koala Hugs: place the pillow under the baby’s tummy, so that their legs are touching the ground. Move the pillow forward, supporting the baby so that they begin to become familiar with the crawling position. You can add an incentive, such as a toy, that they will want to reach for. This activity will also stimulate their neck, arm and leg muscles, which all form crucial of their motor development.
Washing instructions
The pillow cover is removable and can be machine washed at 30˚C. The Inner pillow can be machine-washed at 60°C. We recommend Tumble drying at a low- medium temperature, otherwise seek advice from a Laundry cleaning specialist.
A little secret to keep your pillow super soft
After washing the pillow in the washing machine (with spin cycle activated), hang it out horizontally and let it dry for a few hours. Then, put it back in the washing machine together with two or three laundry balls (tennis balls are also fine, if they are colorfast), but this time only using the spin cycle (not a full wash). The movement of the laundry balls in the washing machine will make the pillow both soft and fluffy.
What is Koala Hugs Plus made of?
- Outer Pillowcase: 100% cotton
- Inner pillow cover: 100% microfiber
- Filling: 100% siliconized polyester
Polyester is the most popular filling for pregnancy pillows as it doesn’t make any noise when moving and offers even support across the entire pillow. The addition of a silicone component helps it to maintain its original shape and gives elasticity to the padding.
