GS10 120V Universal Soft Starter

We’d like to thank you for your purchase! You’ve made an excellent life- quality improvement decision. To reduce manufacturing costs and pass on the savings to our customers, we retain the mill finish of our aluminum, which can result in light scuffing or handling marks on the aluminum enclosures.
IMPORTANT: READ THIS ENTIRE MANUAL BEFORE USE
WARNING:

  • This soft starter is not intended to reduce overall current consumption but is capable of reducing peak starting current levels in certain applications. It is designed to reduce inrush current spikes, however, a current “surge” may still exist during motor acceleration.
  • This soft starter model is not compatible with air compressors, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, or most variable speed motors.
  • Not recommended for induction motor with high inertia load.
  • Not compatible with air conditioners.
  • The theoretical ramp time of this soft starter is approximately 2 seconds.
  • Capacitor start induction motors must be at full speed within 3 seconds of being switched on.
  • If your induction motor takes longer than 3 seconds to reach full speed, discontinue use of Soft Starter immediately.

COMPATIBILITY:
Compatible with most non-digital, low-inertia, mechanically switched 120v motor applications. Application factors such as (actual) inverter ratings, starting current requirements, duration of starting current, etc. will affect overall performance.
See product description at www.thesoftstarter.com for the latest application compatibility list.

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Plug the soft starter cord into your 120vac power receptacle.
  2. Plug your equipment in to the front outlet of the soft starter.
  3. That’s it!

Soft Starter benefits can include:

  • Prolonging equipment life.
  • Noise reduction.
  • Preventing brown outs and dimming lights.
  • Preventing nuisance circuit breaker tripping.
  • Preventing inverter overload.
  • Increased user comfort with power tools.
  • Multi-level safety factor improvement.
  • Electrical injury prevention.
  • Electrical fire prevention. (limitations apply)

OPERATION:

Originally built for use with universal motor power tools, this soft starter has evolved to provide you many additional benefits for a wide variety of applications. This soft starter functions by regulating the output until a demand for current is detected. Once detected, the soft starter will ramp up the voltage level over a 2 second period using our proprietary software algorithm. This example chart illustrates the typical current levels of a 15 amp saw motor during different stages of use. For adjustments see ‘Troubleshooting’ section. FEATURES and SPECIFICATIONS:
Proudly built-in rural America, this soft starter features:

  • Heavy duty extruded aluminum enclosure.
  • High strength plastic end caps.
  • Power cord spiral strain relief.
  • Software controlled ramp algorithm with circuit bypass
  • Over current protection.
  • Hassle free manufacturer LIFETIME WARRANTY.
  • Indoor use only
  • Voltage: 120 Volts AC
  • Maximum current: 15 Amps continuous
  • NEMA 5-15R receptacle. (5-20R GS11)
  • 14AWG (12AWG GS11) power cord – 3foot
  • Length: 6″
  • Width: 4.25″
  • Height: 3.25″
  • Weight: 2.2lbs

TROUBLESHOOTING:

  1. My equipment will not turn on:
Verify that the circuit breaker button is pushed in on your soft starter.
Make sure your device does not have a low voltage contactor or electronic circuit controlling it.
Verify proper Soft Starter operation by testing it with a basic incandescent lamp. If the brightness gradually increases, your soft starter is functioning properly.

  2. My circuit breaker still trips, even with the soft starter:

Since the soft starter has reduced the inrush current spike, it is likely that the surge current is still exceeding the trip rating of your circuit breaker but could also result from a faulty, de-rated circuit breaker.
There are 2 mini switches located on the PCB inside the Soft Starter. These can be adjusted to alter the startup characteristics of your motor. The default settings are 2 second ramp time/ Quicker motor start.
WARNING: extreme precaution must be taken before selecting the 7 second ramp time as only universal and PSC motors are compatible without risking damage to the motor itself.
If your circuit breaker trips almost instantaneously when the motor is switched on, it is likely from excessive inrush current. See figure A. If your circuit breaker trips while the motor is accelerating, it is likely from excessive surge current. See figure B.
