How to Measure Your Deck for the
Keylink Discovery Series Aluminum Railing System

Accurate measurements are essential to ensure you order the correct components for your Keylink Discovery Series aluminum railing installation. Follow these steps to measure your deck accurately:

Step 1: Measure the Perimeter of Your Deck

• Measure the entire perimeter of your deck using a measuring tape. Record the length of each edge from end to end.
• Label each measurement clearly so you know which part of the deck it corresponds to.

Step 2: Determine the Location of Your Posts

• Identify where your posts will be placed:
  ○ End Posts should be positioned where the railing begins and ends, including at the top of stairs.
  ○ Corner Posts should be used where the deck changes direction at a right angle.
  ○ Line Posts should be placed between railing sections on straight runs, ensuring they are spaced no more than 6 feet apart.
  ○ For stair applications , use a 38” Blank Post or an End Post at the top of the stairs.
  ○ Use a 48” Blank Post only for stair end and stair line applications.

Step 3: Measure the Distance Between Post Locations

• Measure the distance between your post locations. This measurement will determine the number of 6-foot railing sections you need.
• Ensure that the distance between posts does not exceed 6 feet, as the Keylink Discovery Series railing sections are designed for 6-foot spans.

Step 4: Measure Stairs

• If your deck includes stairs, measure the length of the staircase along the slope (not vertically or horizontally).
• Remember to use a 38” Blank Post or an End Post at the top of the stairs and a 48” Blank Post for stair end or stair line applications at the bottom.

Step 5: Double-Check Your Measurements

• Always double-check your measurements for accuracy. Precise measurements are crucial to avoid ordering too much or too little material, which could lead to unexpected costs or project delays.
