Facing Reminder Basic Slate Care

Routine Cleaning

  1. Remove any loose dirt or dust by sweeping dusting or vacuuming.
  2. Make a cleaning solution out of water and dish soap: Mix a few drops of mild dish soap in a bucket filled with at least two cups of warm water.
  3. Using circular motions, scrub the slate with a cloth soaked in the cleaning solution. Make sure you slightly ring out the cloth to remove excess moisture before you start scrubbing.
  4. Using a clean cloth and fresh water rinse the soapy solution off the slate.
  5. Following the rinse, use a dry cloth to remove excess moisture and allow the slate to dry at least 24 hours before applying a finishing oil or sealer.
  6. If desired, after the slate has been allowed to dry, wipe it down with teak, tung, or boiled linseed oil for a polished finish.

Removing Stains

  1. Remove any loose dirt or dust by sweeping dusting or vacuuming.
  2. Pour equal portions of water and hydrogen peroxide into a small spray bottle to create a cleaning solution. If you do not have a spray bottle, mix the ingredients in a bucket, and use a sponge to apply it.
  3. Spray the solution directly on the stained surface and let it sit for 5-10 minutes.
    • a. Avoid spraying the solution on any colored grout because it may discolor the grout.
    • b. If you accidentally spray the solution on the grout wipe it off immediately using a clean cloth and fresh\ water.
  4. After the solution has had time to set on the stain, scrub the stain with a soft scrub pad or soft brush.
  5. Allow the slate to air dry after you have scrubbed it down and before putting anything on it. There is no need to wipe the solution off the slate.
  6. For a more powerful cleaning solution, you can mix equal portions of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.
    • a. It will fizz. Wait until the fizzing has stopped.
    • b. Once the fizzing has stopped you will be left with a paste.
  7. Using the paste and a moist cloth, scrub the stained area.
  8. Rinse the area with fresh water and a clean cloth.
  9. Allow the slate to air dry after you have scrubbed it down and before putting anything on it.

CAUTION: Do not use any acidic chemicals like vinegar or lemon because they can etch and damage the slate.
