Routine Cleaning
- Remove any loose dirt or dust by sweeping dusting or vacuuming.
- Make a cleaning solution out of water and dish soap: Mix a few drops of mild dish soap in a bucket filled with at least two cups of warm water.
- Using circular motions, scrub the slate with a cloth soaked in the cleaning solution. Make sure you slightly ring out the cloth to remove excess moisture before you start scrubbing.
- Using a clean cloth and fresh water rinse the soapy solution off the slate.
- Following the rinse, use a dry cloth to remove excess moisture and allow the slate to dry at least 24 hours before applying a finishing oil or sealer.
- If desired, after the slate has been allowed to dry, wipe it down with teak, tung, or boiled linseed oil for a polished finish.
Removing Stains
- Remove any loose dirt or dust by sweeping dusting or vacuuming.
- Pour equal portions of water and hydrogen peroxide into a small spray bottle to create a cleaning solution. If you do not have a spray bottle, mix the ingredients in a bucket, and use a sponge to apply it.
- Spray the solution directly on the stained surface and let it sit for 5-10 minutes.
- a. Avoid spraying the solution on any colored grout because it may discolor the grout.
- b. If you accidentally spray the solution on the grout wipe it off immediately using a clean cloth and fresh\ water.
- After the solution has had time to set on the stain, scrub the stain with a soft scrub pad or soft brush.
- Allow the slate to air dry after you have scrubbed it down and before putting anything on it. There is no need to wipe the solution off the slate.
- For a more powerful cleaning solution, you can mix equal portions of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.
- a. It will fizz. Wait until the fizzing has stopped.
- b. Once the fizzing has stopped you will be left with a paste.
- Using the paste and a moist cloth, scrub the stained area.
- Rinse the area with fresh water and a clean cloth.
- Allow the slate to air dry after you have scrubbed it down and before putting anything on it.
CAUTION: Do not use any acidic chemicals like vinegar or lemon because they can etch and damage the slate.
