How to construct a wooden
Step by step: How to construct a wooden goal
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Telescopic miter saw
- Battery-powered impact drill/screwdriver
- Staple gun
- Wooden beam: 44 x 44 mm, 270 cm in length
- Workmate
- Wood screws, 80 mm in length
- Net – e.g. a net for a trailer
- Safety goggles and work gloves
- Folding rule, pencil
SAWING
Step 1: Cut the beams for the bottom support structure to size
The goal will be supported by two 50 cm long beams and one 126 cm long beam,
the lower crossbar. First, mark off the correct length using the pencil and
folding rule. Then, cut the three beams to size, using the telescopic miter
saw, with the saw blade at a 90° angle.
Tip: Be sure to wear your safety goggles and work gloves when sawing.
ASSEMBLY
Step 2: Assemble the bottom support structure
- Using the three cut-to-size beams, construct a wide U-shape by mounting the short 50 cm beams onto the ends of the 126 cm beam. Do this by predrilling two holes in the short beams. Use your battery-powered impact drill/ screwdriver for this, with the hammer function switched off.
- Then mount the short beams onto the ends of the long beam, using the screwdriving function on your impact drill/screwdriver. Use 80 mm long wood screws to do this. Position the screws side by side.
Step 3: Cut the beams for the goalposts and upper crossbar to size, and assemble
- Now you’ll need two 90 cm long beams to serve as the goal posts and a 126 cm long beam to serve as the top crossbar.
- Mark off the correct length and cut to size using the telescopic miter saw.
- Next, construct another wide U-shape by mounting the two 90 cm beams onto the ends of the 126 cm beam. But first, pre-drill two holes in the short beams.
SAWING AND ASSEMBLING
Step 4: Mount the vertical structure onto the horizontal structure
- Time to mount the vertical structure (goal posts and upper crosspiece) onto the horizontal structure.
- Do this by driving two screws through each end of the horizontal structure’s short beams.
Step 5: Cut and mount the diagonal beams
- Position a beam diagonally from the upper right-hand corner of the vertical structure to the bottom right-hand corner of the horizontal structure. Mark the corners to be cut on the diagonal beam so that fits both corners snugly. Use the miter saw to cut both ends of the beam at the correct angle.
- Now do the same for the left side of the goal. Then attach both diagonal beams with screws through the top and bottom, using the impact drill/screwdriver.
ATTACHING THE NET
Step 6: Attach the net to the goal
- Place the goal on the ground, with the opening facing down. Cover the sides and the back with a net. Secure the net to the beams with a staple gun. Be generous with the amount of staples, so it’s attached securely. Finally, cut away the excess net near the upper crossbar and the posts.
- Now all you need to do is put the goal upright and shoot your shot!
