Guidelines for Storing and Thawing Breastmilk

You should store and thaw your breast milk correctly. This is the only way you can be sure that all the important nutrients are preserved and bacterial contamination is minimized.
It’s recommended to use the following guidelines for storing and thawing breast milk.

Breast milk Storage (For Healthy Term Babies)

| Freshly expressed breast milk| Thawed breast milk (previously frozen)
---|---|---
Room Temperature| Do not store at room temperature| Do not store
Refrigerator| 3-5 days at approx. 4°C| 10 hours
Freshly expressed
breast milk| 6 months at approx. -16°C| Do not refreeze after thawing!
Freezer| 12 months at approx. -18°C| Do not refreeze after thawing!

Tips for freezing/thawing breast milk:

  • Never fill bottles/bags more than 3/4 to allow space for expansion.
  • Label the bottle/bag with the date you expressed the milk.
  • Do not store breast milk in the door of the refrigerator.
  • In order to preserve the components of the breast milk, thaw in the refrigerator overnight or by holding the bottle/bag under running warm water (max. 37°C).
  • Shake the bottle/bag gently to blend any fat that has separated.
  • Do not thaw frozen breast milk in a microwave oven or in a pan of boiling water (danger of burning).
  • Do not microwave breast milk. Microwaving can cause severe burns to the baby’s mouth from hot spots that develop in the milk during microwaving. (Microwaving can also change the composition of breast milk).

1. WEAK VACUUM OR NO VACUUM

  • All parts must be totally dry and not damp.

  • Frequent use or improper sterilization method can cause aging on the liquid insert. If the liquid insert has aged and is worn out, replace it immediately.

  • Make sure that the liquid insert on each accessory kit fits tightly onto the shield assembly.
The liquid inserts have edges that should fit perfectly across the shield edges.

  • A liquid inserts not snugly attached will cause a poor vacuum.

  • Make sure that the seal diaphragm is properly attached to the shield assembly.

  • Check that all connections are tight and not will cause any air leak. Check that tubing are not wet, damped, bent, or twisted.

  • Tubing must be straightened to ensure proper airflow.

  • Make sure that there is no dried-up milk residue in the tubing.

  • If you notice any milk residue, clean the tubing and air dry.
(Follow proper cleaning instructions from this manual)

  • If you notice any water condensation or milk inside the tubing, clean and air dry.

  • Tubing must always be dry and checked prior to each use. Wet tubing and damp tubing will cause a poor vacuum.

  • Worn-out tubing with holes will cause a poor vacuum. Replace immediately when worn out.

  • Check to make sure that the shield assembly is well secured and tightly fastened to the tubing connector.

  • Check that tubing end with a connector end is tight and connected well to the tubing and the shield assembly, the other tubing end without the connector is connected tightly to the pump unit.
***All the above instructions must be followed. Failure to follow any of these instructions will lead to a weak vacuum or no vacuum at all.

THE BREAST PUMP IS WORKING BUT NOT ABLE TO EXPRESS MILK

  • You might be experiencing breast engorgement. Place a warm towel on the engorged breast.
  • Use alternating hand expressions and gentle breast massage to help decrease swelling and improve breast drainage. Try doing this before starting a pumping session.
  • It is recommended to pump every 2 to 3 hours, including breastfeeding hours. If you are still in postnatal care, you must pump each breast for 15 minutes according to your milk secretion.
  • Do not pump for more than 40 minutes to avoid hurting your breast.
  • If you have large breasts, hold and massage gently while pumping milk to help with the milk flow.

THE DEVICE NOT POWERING ON

  • Check your power outlet by plugging in another electrical device.
  • Make sure the power outlet source is working.
  • Make sure that your power adaptor is connected properly to the breast pump unit.
  • If you are using a power adaptor and your breast pump is not turning on, try using the battery power and not the AC Adaptor.
  • Make sure the battery is fully charged. If it works on the battery power, you might have a defective AC adaptor.

MILK OVERFLOW PREVENTION

  • Electric Breast Pump SMG is a closed system breast pump, designed with a barrier so that milk will not enter the tubing.
  • Below are some measures to avoid milk backflow:
  • Adjust the vacuum strength to a lesser vacuum level if your breast milk is relatively abundant.
  • Try releasing pressure between your breast and the liquid insert if you notice that the milk is gathering inside the tunnel and is not streaming down to the collection bottle.
  • Do not overfill the collection bottle.
  • Clean and degrease the valves of the accessory kit.

PUMP UNIT/ Li-ion Cylindrical BATTERY USE PRECAUTIONS
