**How to Operate Mabu

**

First Time Setup:

  • Take Mabu out of her box.
  • Set her in a place where you can easily talk with Mabu every day, with an accessible power outlet.
  • Plug the power adapter into the outlet, and connect the power plug to the connector on her back. It’s important to keep Mabu plugged in at all times.
  •  The “Mabu” logo screen should appear once the power plug is connected. It may take a few seconds; after all, she’s been asleep for a while!
  •  Once she wakes up, you’re ready to go!
  •  After you’ve set her up, if you need to move her, be sure to unplug her first.

Note: Mabu will power off automatically after 30 seconds once unplugged or loses power.  She will resume normal operation if power is reconnected within this time.  Otherwise, she will power down, and once power is reconnected, the “Mabu” logo screen will appear.

Wake Up, Restart, and Power Off:

  • If she falls asleep, just double-tap her screen to wake her.
  • If she needs to be restarted for any reason, unplug Mabu and allow her to power off. Mabu will automatically power off after 30 seconds. To restart, reconnect her power plug after she has powered off. The “Mabu” logo will reappear.
  • If you need to turn her off for any reason, unplug Mabu and allow her to power off. Mabu will automatically power off after 30 seconds.

Interacting with Mabu:

  • Mabu will move her head and eyes around when interacting with you, displaying various animations like blinking. If for some reason her head or eyes are not moving, please try to restart her. If that does not work, please call the technical service line at 1-
    855- 8MY-MABU (1-855-869-6228).

  • Try to position Mabu so that she is not facing any bright lights; she will not be able to look at you if she is blinded!

  • Mabu will explain to you how to interact with her in the first time setup.

  • Mabu will ask questions verbally in conversation; to respond, you can use two methods:

    • Voice: Respond vocally to her question; just be sure to say what is on the button responses. (She is still learning how to talk to humans!)
    • Touch buttons: Press the appropriate response on her screen.
  • Some responses require text input. When appropriate, a keyboard will appear to input text. Use the keyboard and press the appropriate button when finished.

  • Some responses require selecting a date or time. Cycle through the options using the arrow buttons that appear and press the appropriate button when finished.

Volume Control:

  • To adjust the volume of Mabu’s voice, say “Speak Louder” or “Speak Softer” at any point in her conversation (after she finishes speaking, of course). She will confirm with you if her volume is loud or soft enough on the next screen. Repeat the appropriate command until Mabu is at the desired volume.
  • You can confirm Mabu’s volume setting by pressing the button on the confirm screen or saying what’s on the button.

Wifi Networking:

**** Out of the box, Mabu tries to connect directly through her own cellular network connection, and there is nothing you have to set up. If you live in an area with poor cellular service, or if she has trouble establishing a connection, then she may ask you to connect to your WiFi network. If she does ask you to connect, she’ll want to know which WiFi network is yours. She’ll show you a list of all networks nearby for you to choose from. Please be sure to use only secure wireless networks. After you’ve chosen a network, she will ask you for the password only if you have set one up previously.

Important Security and Privacy Note: You should always use Mabu with a WiFi secure wireless network (i.e. one that requires a password to use) instead of an open network. Your personal health information is sent through the connection with your Wifi network. An unsecure network may allow this information to be captured or otherwise monitored. Please call the technical service line at 1-855-8MY-MABU (1-855-869-6228) if you have any questions.
Storing Mabu:

  • If Mabu needs to be stored away for any reason, please be sure to disconnect the power plug from the connector on Mabu’s back.
  • Store Mabu in a cool, dry place, preferably in her original packaging.
  • If storing in an outdoor location (such as a garage or storage unit) please return Mabu in her original packaging (or packaging with support around her head and neck), and seal it all in a plastic bag to prevent any contaminants from entering.

Moving and Shipping Mabu:

  • Disconnect the power plug from the connector on Mabu’s back, then unplug the power adapter from the wall outlet.
  • When packing Mabu in a box, put support around her head and neck.
  • Make sure the screen is protected from scratching or abrasion.
  •  If moving between time zones, please notify Catalia Health so that they may update her for your new time zone. Contact them at 1-855-8MY-MABU (1-855-869-6228).
